Soft Sounds For Gentle People #1
A few years ago a '60s comp called Soft Sounds For Gentle People would've been laughed out of town. Sixties fans, myself included, were looking mostly for Hard Sounds for Rough People. Not so now. As the well begins to run dry on the raunchier '60s obscurities the net has been cast wider to include more flowery and melodic sounds - good music is good music after all. And in times like these, this kind of harmony-flower-pop-psych radiates a soothing innocence and idealism that the world could use more of. At its best, nothing, for me, can match the pure excitement of raw '60s punk or R&B, but the best pop productions from the same era have a different kind of magic that is in its way just as enjoyable. Or maybe I'm just getting old.
But enough self-reflectionј Soft Sounds for Gentle People is a marvelous selection of American - primarily Californian - pop sounds ranging from relatively familiar names like the Pleasure Fair, the Peppermint Trolley Company and the Fireballs to unknowns like Paper Fortress and the Brigadune, a post West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band outing by Shaun Harris.
Highlights include Moorpark Intersection's beaming "I Think I'll Go Out and Find Myself A Flower," the Rich Kids' "Plastic Flowers" (a dead ringer for Gandalf) and Stone Country's mystical "Mantra," a first-rate Eastern raga excursion from their '68 album on RCA. Another RCA gem is one of my longtime personal favorites, "My Buddy Sin" by the Stained Glass, a brilliant folk-rock piece with radiant Everly Brothers-type harmonies, chiming 12-string acoustics, great harmonica and sharply intriguing lyrical content taking on the question of religion and personal morality. Worth the price of admission alone.
Of the 23 cuts there's a mere handful of duffers - but you may disagree. Good, colorful cover art and insightful liner notes make this a very pleasing purchase to file alongside your Fading Yellows and Peppermint Clouds.
