How to torrent safely with Amnezia VPN
In this guide, we will walk you through how to use the AmneziaVPN app and Amnezia Premium service to route traffic from any torrent client through a VPN server. This is useful for hiding your torrent activity from your ISP and your real IP address from other peers.
Hiding torrent traffic is particularly relevant for users in countries with strict copyright laws, where downloading or sharing protected content can lead to serious sanctions.
Example of sanctions
- USA: downloading pirated content is considered a serious offense. ISPs may block internet access for repeat offenders, and copyright holders can file civil lawsuits claiming statutory damages ranging from $750 to $30,000 per infringement.
- Canada: under the "Notice and Notice" regime, ISPs are required to forward copyright infringement notices to users. If a case goes to court, fines for non-commercial use can reach up to $5,000.
- UK: penalties can range from 6 months to 10 years in prison, along with unlimited fines for serious copyright infringement.
- Germany: fines for downloading protected content typically range from several hundred euros up to €1,000 per file. Repeat offenses can lead to fines of €5,000–10,000. Uploading is also prosecuted, often resulting in formal warning letters from law firms.

- You simply need to disable Split Tunneling entirely.
- Connect to the [P2P] Switzerland location. Verify your IP address on ipinfo.io/what-is-my-ip to ensure your real IP is hidden before you start using torrents.

How to enable Kill Switch

Once you receive your Subscription Key (vpn://...) for Amnezia Premium, download the AmneziaVPN app from the
official download page.
Launch the AmneziaVPN app and create a connection using Subscription Key (vpn://...): click the Insert button to the right of the input field, then click Continue → Connect.
Now that the Amnezia Premium connection is created, click the large round Connect button — you will automatically connect to a random location.
If you are connected to the [P2P] Switzerland location, go to
ipinfo.io/what-is-my-ip and verify that the service shows the VPN server's IP address, not your real one. If everything looks correct, you can launch and use your torrent client.
If you are connected to any other location
- Disconnect from the VPN,
- Click on the current location name,
- Select [P2P] Switzerland,
- Click Connect again before checking your IP and using your torrent client.

Split Tunneling allows you to route traffic selectively — for example, ensuring that only specific websites or apps open via the VPN. Disabling Split Tunneling is required to ensure the desired result: hiding torrent traffic from your ISP and your real IP address from peers.
Torrenting with Split Tunneling enabled is possible only if it is configured correctly. For example, you can exclude your browser and games (so they bypass the VPN using your real IP), while torrent traffic continues to go through the VPN.

Why is it important to use the Kill Switch feature when torrenting?

Kill Switch blocks your internet connection if the VPN connection drops or is lost unexpectedly. This is necessary to reduce the risk of leaking your real IP address or exposing your torrent traffic to your ISP if the VPN suddenly stops working for any reason.
It is also good practice to connect to the VPN before launching your torrent client. If your torrent client is set to auto-start with your system, consider disabling that to further reduce leak risks.
