Ripples #1-4
An overwhelming four-volume set of solid, pure rockin' pop music which could be filed under "just when you thought you'd everything cool". If you're diabetic, have your insulin ready, cuz these four slabs are more sweet than a glass of water and heaping spoonful of sugar. Volume One is probably the best of the bunch, especially the feature cut "Look at the Sunshine" by The Freshmen. Episode Six checks in with "Put Yourself In My Place," a crunchy, driving version of The Hollies' song, followed by a decent remake of The Lovin' Spoonful's "Younger Girl" by The Knack; more guitar-driven, but lacking the soul of John Sebastian's vocals. Take your pick.
Midway thought Volume One, The Kinks make their presence known with "Sunny Afternoon", followed by the light "Hey Little Girl" by Charles Dickens (great name!) and then another remake by The Bystanders ("98.6"). Sands of Time make the scene with a sugar-coated, horn-filled "Love Found a Way to My Heart". Pet Clark rounds out everything with a soulful "Groovin'".
On Volume Two, The Searchers once again prove that they rule the planet with "Popcorn Double Feature", a late 60s Bee Gees-esque masterpiece that's quite possibly the best track of the whole series. Speaking of The Bee Gees, you'll dig Volume Three. The Knack (who've a slight change from their sound on Volume 1) offer "(The Man From The) Marriage Guidance and Advice Bureau", hinting at shades of working class UK kitchen sink films ala A Taste of Honey. The Frugal Sound divvy up a tame version of "Norwegian Wood" (which sounds similar to the Jan and Dean version), followed by the bouncy "You've Got to Be Loved" by The Montanas. The bulk of Volume Four's tracks sound like they could've come straight from the Big Apple's Brill Building. The Rockin' Berries could've been hanging out with The Four Seasons evidenced by "Across The Street". Thankfully Frankie Valli is nowhere to be heard. Tony Jackson's "Stage Door" is a tribute to stalkers everywhere, and Julie Grant's "Up on The Roof" is a Meek-inspired stringy affair. Best song of the lot goes to four-part harmony stylings of The Wackers' "The Girl Who Wanted Fame".
With each CD containing nearly 30 tracks, pick up any of the four and you won't be disappointed. Two more volumes including a UK surf comp are due out momentarily.
