Originally released on vinyl and cassette in May 1989 then re-released on CD in 1995, the audio for this reissue was freshly transferred from the original master tapes and has been remastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road.
Utmost care was taken to preserve Tim Smith's singular sonic vision, retaining all the dynamics of the original pressing, but presented here with a new level of warmth and clarity.

«Two Bites of Cherry» сразу бросает слушателя в этот хаотичный мир, а «Baby Heart Dirt» соединяет резкую угловатость с удивительно цепкой мелодией. «The Leader of the Starry Skies» звучит более торжественно и широко, прежде чем короткая «I Hold My Love in My Arms» уступает место безумной «The Duck and Roger the Horse», где музыкальные идеи сменяют друг друга с почти мультяшной скоростью.

On Land and in the Sea is a feverish, colorful, and dizzyingly dense album that turns the rock song into a space for constant mutation. Punk energy collides with progressive complexity, fairground theatricality, unusual harmony, and abrupt changes of tempo. Tim Smith’s music can move within seconds from an almost childlike melody to a furious ensemble explosion, only to veer just as suddenly into an entirely different direction.
“Two Bites of Cherry” immediately throws the listener into this chaotic world, while “Baby Heart Dirt” combines sharp angularity with an irresistibly memorable melody. “The Leader of the Starry Skies” feels broader and more majestic before the brief “I Hold My Love in My Arms” gives way to the manic “The Duck and Roger the Horse,” where musical ideas replace one another with almost cartoon-like speed.
The middle of the album continues this play with contrasts: miniature pieces such as “Arnald” and “Horsehead” sit beside the more expansive “Fast Robert” and “Mare’s Nest,” while “The Stench of Honey” demonstrates Cardiacs’ rare ability to make complicated and strangely constructed music feel both nervous and immediately memorable. On “Buds and Spawn,” that approach reaches particular intensity, with dense keyboards, abrupt rhythmic shifts, and vocal lines forming a turbulent stream that constantly threatens to collapse while remaining precisely organized.
After the brief “The Safety Bowl,” the album closes with the eight-minute “The Everso Closely Guarded Line,” a more spacious and dramatic piece that allows its numerous ideas more room to develop. On Land and in the Sea captures the peculiar logic of Cardiacs perfectly: beneath the surface hyperactivity lies meticulously constructed music in which complexity never prevents the melodies from being vivid, funny, unsettling, and unexpectedly moving.
