California, still only 21, opted to return to the influence of his early mentor, Jimi Hendrix, who had died in 1970. California wailed through a series of tunes in a style more reminiscent of the extended arrangements of Electric Ladyland than the tight psychedelic pop singles on Are You Experienced. Beatles songs like "Day Tripper" and "Rain" became almost unrecognizable frames for California's improvisations. At least the covers were actual songs, which was more than you could say for the originals. Kapt. Kopter ended up proving that California was not ready to be promoted from a group guitarist who sang and wrote occasionally.

Curly Smith Drums Randy California turned in his second solo album ten years after his first, and it reflected his experiences in the interim. California had spent the decade leading various lineups of Spirit, including one full-fledged reunion of the original band, and the album featured all of them, albeit not all on the same track. Spirit had built up a considerable following in Europe (the album did not see a US release), and California's bi-continental focus was expressed on the LP's two sides: the "American" one was given over mostly to guitar-dominated hard rock, while the "European" side was more varied, some of it featuring light pop, along with a cover of "Wild Thing."

Mike Sheppard Vocals After the one-off reunion of the original Spirit lineup that produced the 1984 album Spirit of '84 (aka The Thirteenth Dream), singer/guitarist Randy California returned to his solo career, signing to Vertigo, a British subsidiary of PolyGram Records, to record his third proper solo album, Restless. By the time the LP was released in June 1985, the management of the record company had changed, and the album was given virtually no promotion. California, who retained the rights to the Spirit name, returned to the U.S. and went back to billing himself, drummer Ed Cassidy, and whatever bassist and keyboardist they could hire as Spirit for the rest of his life. Restless, meanwhile, was a fairly typical effort for him. Depending on your point of view, it sounded like Spirit, or like most of the Spirit albums released after the band's initial breakup, on which California was the main songwriter, lead singer, and lead guitarist. That is to say, it was melodic hard rock for the most part, dominated by California's ringing guitar work, which recalled that of his mentor, Jimi Hendrix, in places. The mix favored the guitar over the vocals, which was just as well since California was more accomplished as a guitar player than he was as a singer or songwriter.

There is "Downer," which first appeared on California's debut solo album, Kapt. Kopter and the (Fabulous) Twirly Birds; "Shattered Dreams" and "Hand Guns" were on his second solo album, Euro-American; and "Hey Joe" and "All Along the Watchtower" are covers closely associated with California's mentor, Jimi Hendrix. California hews to a guitar-drenched rock sound, and the only distinction between his solo work and the music he credits to Spirit is the backup personnel. Even that is violated here, as original Spirit drummer Ed Cassidy appears on the first two tracks, and original Spirit keyboard man John Locke and replacement Spirit bassist Larry Knight are on the second. By whatever name, California remains a talented Hendrix-steeped guitarist who has never quite succeeded as a frontman.
