Kajsa Balto has established herself as one of the central voices within her generation of musicians from Sápmi. Her approach to yoik, the Sámi singing tradition, and her intuitive way of working across genres, has garnered glowing reviews both at home and abroad. Kajsa has created a soulful musical platform, where ancestral knowledge and modernity merge, always leaving the listernes eager for more.
Her upcoming album ‘Rájás’ is a powerful artistic statement to one of the darkest chapters in Norwegian modern history: the Norwegianisation of the Sámi people. Kajsa’s father was sent to boarding school as a young child, as part of the State’s aim to remove the Sámi language and create distance between Sámi families and generations. With ‘Rájás’ she honors her father’s history and the struggle he has faced throughout his life to pass on the Sámi heritage to his daughter.
