Holy Minimalism
aka: European Mysticism / Mystic Minimalism / Sacred Minimalism / Spiritual Minimalism Holy Minimalism is a style of Minimalism that evolved principally in Europe during the late 20th century. Like minimalism as a whole, holy minimalism emerged as a rejection of post-war modernism in favor of radically simplified compositional frameworks, extensive use of repetition, static harmonies, and (usually) clear tonal or modal centers offset by occasional dissonance or non-functional harmony. But whereas minimalism often emphasizes lengthy drones or elaborately shifting rhythmic patterns and ostinati that produce a 'pulsing' sensation, holy minimalism tends to focus on basic, sustained, rhythmic values, soft dynamics, slow tempi, and moments of extended silence to evoke a sense of intimate contemplation reminiscent of the act of silent prayer rather than a trance-like suspension of time or motoric driving momentum. Additionally, whereas standard minimalism could be described as broadly syncretic and inspired by various non-Western genres such as Gamelan and Dhrupad, holy minimalism is largely derived from European Christian Liturgical Music, which imparts a distinctive monophonic texture and homorhythmic simplicity emulative of the musical traditions of the Catholic and Orthodox faiths. For example, Estonian composer Arvo Pärt developed a compositional method dubbed 'tintinnabuli', in which one voice plays an arpeggiated tonic triad while a second moves in a diatonic stepwise motion, thus creating a sound reminiscent of ringing bells commonly used by the Orthodox Church. In terms of emotional tone, holy minimalism is often overtly reverential and tries to evoke feelings of prayerful or tragic poignancy in stark contrast to the post-modern aloofness or abstraction that characterizes many other minimalist works. At a conceptual level, holy minimalism often focuses on religious programmatic concepts (mostly pertaining to aspects of Christianity). It should be noted that holy minimalism remains a somewhat controversial term, as it has been used disparagingly and there has never been a unified movement of artists who self-identify with the term. While a handful of older composers such as Alan Hovhaness and Andrzej Panufnik prefigured elements of holy minimalism in their music, it wasn't until the mid-1970s that the genre would start to emerge as a distinct trend. During this time, several composers including Arvo Pärt, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, and John Tavener would, independently of one another, produce works of music such as Fratres, Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, and The Protecting Veil that critics would retroactively label as 'holy minimalism'. From the late 1980s and throughout the 90s, holy minimalism would witness a sharp rise in popularity due to a confluence of events including a surge in commercial promotion by record labels such as ECM New Series and Elektra Nonesuch, the greater liberalization and eventual dissolution of the USSR precipitating a resurgence of interest of pre-Soviet forms of religious artistic expression within Eastern Europe, and a general reaction against modernist trends in Western classical circles producing a widespread demand for music of greater consonance and simplicity.
