Zagreb Jazz Fair bio je prvi jazz festival međunarodnog ugleda u Hrvatskoj koji je sustavno predstavljao aktualna zbivanja na domaćoj i svjetskoj jazz sceni. Najprije u organizaciji Centra za kulturnu djelatnost omladine, a poslije Omladinskog kulturnog centra, kao autori programa izmjenjivali su se Boško Petrović i Mladen Mazur, a jedne godine i glasoviti američki jazz kritičar i komentator Willis Conover. Tijekom dvanaest godina održavanja na tom su se festivalu predstavili najvažniji hrvatski (Boško Petrović, Ladislav Fidri, Boris Benini, Drago Diklić, Ozren Depolo, Petar Ugrin, Zagrebački jazz kvartet…), ali i vrhunski europski (Albert Mangelsdorf, Joachim Kuhn, Enrico Rava, Vienna Art Orchestra) i svjetski (Art Farmer, Clark Terry, Toots Thielemans, John Lewis, Stanley Clarke, Chet Baker, Pharoah Sanders, Arturo Sandoval, Randy Brecker, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Hubbard, Cassandra Wilson, Archie Shepp, James Newton, Cecil Taylor, Gary Burton, Charles Lloyd, Hermeto Pascoal, John Scofield, Joe Lovano) jazz glazbenici i sastavi.
Zahvaljujući njegovom utemeljitelju Bošku Petroviću za Jazz Fair su nerijetko organizirani jazz projekti u kojima su nastupali all star sastavi, najčešće spajajući hrvatske sa stranim glazbenicima. Jazz Fair je utemeljen u povodu trostrukog jubileja Boška Petrovića: 25 godina glazbenog djelovanja, 20. obljetnice osnutka Zagrebačkog jazz kvarteta i 10. obljetnice njegovog sastava B.P. Convention. Već nakon prve godine, kad je pod nazivom Jazz Fair Lap ‘79 održan u gornjogradskom Lapidariju, festival je preseljen u Kulušić u kojem se održao osam godina, a 1988. je novi dom pronašao u tadašnjem, zahvaljujući Univerzijadi, novouređenom Omladinskom kulturnom centru (nekadašnjoj dvorani Istra, a danas Zagrebačkom kazalištu mladih) gdje je održan posljednje tri godine. Iste godine utemeljena je nagrada Jazz Faira za doprinos na polju domaćeg jazza.

Thanks to its founder Boško Petrović, jazz projects were often organized for the Jazz Fair in which all-star bands performed, most often combining Croatian and foreign musicians. The Jazz Fair was founded on the occasion of Boško Petrović's triple jubilee: 25 years of musical activity, the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Zagreb Jazz Quartet and the 10th anniversary of its composition B.P. Convention. Already after the first year, when it was held under the name Jazz Fair Lap '79 in Lapidari in Gornji Grad, the festival was moved to Kulušić, where it was held for eight years, and in 1988 it found a new home in what was then, thanks to the Universiade, the newly renovated Youth Cultural Center (former the Istra Hall, and today the Zagreb Youth Theater) where it has been held for the last three years. In the same year, the Jazz Fair award for contribution to the field of domestic jazz was founded.
