Об альбоме
This CD contains Dizzy Gillespies complete performance at the 1961 Monterey Jazz Festival. While humorously presented by Diz as “A Musical Safari”, the set is a mixture of the repertoire the quintet was playing during that period, including an excursion into the realm of bossa nova. By 1962, and especially after the appearance of Stan Getz &, Charlie Byrd’s Jazz Samba, a true bossa nova craze had started in the United States. It wouldn’t be fair to say that Dizzy jumped on the bossa bandwagon as a commercial move. He had been among the first to combine Latin (and above all Cuban) rhythms with jazz in the mid-1940s, adding spectacular conga drummer Chano Pozo to his band, and he toured South America extensively, playing with as many talented musicians from every possible style as he could find. Always interested in exotic rhythms from all over the world, Gillespie embraced Lalo Schifrin when he met him in Buenos Aires, and asked him to compose for his band, but also to arrange pieces from other composers. Best known for his film and TV scores, Schifrin (born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on June 21, 1932) began as a jazz piano player who worked with some of the most important musicians of his country. Schifrin’s life would dramatically change after Dizzy Gillespie’s visit to Argentina. “South America was very picturesque”, remembered Diz in his autobiography, To Be or Not to Bop. “It has character, it has haunting views much like San Francisco, too. Argentina struck me as being really Spanish. They’re more Spanish to me than any of the other countries in South America. They concocted a press scheme in Buenos Aires to dress me up in a gaucho costume and let me ride on horseback through the streets of the city. They roped off a block on Florida Avenue, this street near the club, La Rendezvous, that was run by Osvaldo Fresedo. He’s an old tango musician and we were gonna have a session.” Schifrin continues the story: “After that, Dizzy Gillespie came to South America with his own band and offered me a job with him. I couldn’t go right away, because I had some business to take care of. I was writing for movies already in Argentina. I won the equivalent of the Academy Award in 1958 for an Argentinean picture. With that group there was a real enthusiasm; we were always having a good time. It’s a hedonistic feeling, playing with Dizzy. Even when we played the blues, it wasn’t sad. There’s some sort of joy of life that he conveys, which communicates to all the members of the group. I stayed with Dizzy about three years. In addition to writing many things for the small group, I rearranged his band book for a type of orchestra with no saxophones in it -only brass. Horns and tuba replaced the saxophones. We did some concerts at Carnegie Hall, also at the University of Los Angeles. We came to Europe with that book, too, and put together a band for the Antibes Festival. The French horns were British, if I remember rightly. Mainly for recording, I composed two long pieces for Dizzy to play with a big orchestra, ‘The Gillespiana Suite’ and ‘The New Continent’. The latter was commissioned by the 1962 Monterey Jazz Festival.” This release presents Diz’s September 23, 1961 performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival. It features one composition by Schifrin, “Long, Long Summer”, and two by Diz, “Kush” and “Lorraine” (the latter dedicated to the trumpeter’s wife). “A Musical Safari most accurately describes what evolved from this afternoon concert in September 1961 at the Monterey Jazz Festival”, stated Martin Cohen in his original liner notes for the long out of print first LP edition of this performance. “Dizzy always felt close to his African roots; be it in the Afro-Cuban sound or the gentle hypnotic beat of Bossa-nova. Dizzy’s music is always sanctified with a quality that appeals to all. This recording captures a truly historic moment in modern music.” Duke Ellington, who had played the previous set with his orchestra, introduces Dizzy and his quintet on this performance, which was fortunately preserved for posterity. As a bonus, we have added all existing tunes from a Dizzy Gillespie Quintet concert live at the Museum of Modern Art, in New York, which also features Schifrin. Although six more tunes were apparently played during that show, none of them were ever issued and the master tapes were destroyed.
