Maybe Modern, the new album from Massachusetts-born Americana artist Grace Morrison is due out April 14th.
But before this lovely, unflinching work is released, the singer-songwriter–who has sung backup for Eddie Money and seen one of her music videos appear on American Idol–just shared a poignant track from the album with us to premiere on the site.
“Caught Up in Your Blue” was an incredibly emotional song for Morrison to pen, having seen two important women in her life endure abusive relationships with partners, with signs of drug and alcohol addiction lurking around the corner. Her desire to save these women from their dire situations was palpable, taking mental notes of the fear and pain they both experienced.
“Abusers, it seems to me, have a play book,” she explains in regards to the song’s impetus. “They isolate you. Make you feel like you need them, that you’re worthless. I swear, the quotes from both abusers were essentially identical. I sat on the sidelines practically screaming ‘You’ve got to leave! Why don’t you leave?!.’
“There came a point when I remembered I could not save these women. They had to save themselves. It was a helpless moment for me, because I think my love language is being a ‘fixer.’ All I could do was write this song. I imagined they freed themselves. Then they did.”
The song is the final single from Maybe Modern, which was produced by Walt Wilkins and Ron Flynt, recorded and mixed by Ron Flynt at Jumping Dog Studio, Austin, and mastered by John Mailloux at Bongo Beach Productions Westport, MA.
Check it out below, as fans of the Chicks and Kacey Musgraves will no doubt savor the honest artistry of Grace Morrison.
