Об альбоме (сборнике)
In 2005, even before the release of his first album, Ibrahim began work that seemed obvious to him. With his first album, Ibrahim had made an artistic proposal, but was far from having finished everything he had to say. And this second album was the logical continuation of the first. An evolution in the form of a question. "Do I necessarily have to evolve in a clear artistic direction: Eastern or Western? Am I forced by my origins to take refuge in the ease of exoticism? Ibrahim asks this question through an astonishing process. 2 CDs in the same album. One is "DISORIENTAL" and the other "PARADOXIDENTAL", and both deal with the same question from two very different angles. The first is the oriental's view of the mixing with the West. The other is the Westerner's view of mixing with the East. According to Ibrahim, this album is a work of research. Far from being a result, it is part of an artistic and intimate therapeutic process.
Ibrahim Maalouf’s debut album, Diasporas, was such a bold album that it created a challenge. How could the trumpeter/composer/bandleader follow it? On Diachronism, Maalouf answered and set a true direction for his career. Go bigger. Diasporas was, for all its creativity and confrontation toward boundaries, a stripped down affair, built around Ibrahim’s trumpet, some oud, and some relatively subdued electronics. Diachronism, divided between two discs, includes a couple of duets, but the arrangements get much more elaborate, including vocal work, fuller band arrangements, expansion into more genres, and generally speaking, the mindset of an artist asking, where next? What can I do next?
At the core, there remains the immediately distinctive, lilting sound of Maalouf’s trumpet, which manages to evoke Middle Eastern sounds, and even Middle Eastern singing technique through his horn, along with electronics in a way that seems familiar from Diasporas. Electric guitars occasionally augment, along with saz, and piano from no less than Jacky Terrasson! Yes, Terrasson. A rising star from the 1990s shows up to pass the torch, so to speak, and say that yes, Maalouf is not only the real deal, but the new rising star, the one to watch, and Jacky says listen. Also, you get to hear Jacky Terrasson, and that’s always good.
That said, Diachronism sounds nothing like a Terrasson album. Terrasson came up in the 1990s boom of post-bop sophisticated jazz, as it recovered from what was happening the previous decade. Cool? Yes, but Maalouf is not trying to save jazz. He is reinventing it, tearing down, rebuilding, with the kind of restless energy of a runner off at a sprint any time he hears anything even vaguely resembling a starting signal because he just can’t stop it.
Diasporas was strange and different and inspiring. This is leaps and bounds beyond, and only two years after something that was such an opening statement that it would have been career-defining innovation for most artists. Maalouf just keeps going, though. Whether playing against a saz, Jacky Terrasson, hip hop vocals, electronics, or later, as on a masterpiece like Levantine Symphony, the Paris Symphony Orchestra, Maalouf just cannot be contained in any style or format. Restless genius.
And this was just one step past Diasporas for an artist who would keep going. Remarkable.
