Fueled by rare European grooves, psychedelia, soundtrack records, and old school superhero cartoon skits, ‘Villainz4Life’ marks the coming of Russian producer Galaktic Rogue.
Galaktic Rogue seems to be a man of few words. But something that came up in an early conversation with him, speaks volumes: “Rip It Up and Start Again.” With the phrase, he expressed how he wants to break free from a couple of previous loop-digging and MPC-tapping aliases. At the same time, the nod to a post-punk book and early 80s song gives away a bit of his own origin story.
Even more so after he’s only shared just one photo on any of his unsocial media: his MPC2000XL & SP-404SX setup, with a poster of new wave/post-punk band Siouxsie and The Banshees next to comic-style Madvillain, covering the last bit of visible wall between hundreds of cassette tapes, vinyl records, a Doctor Doom collectible figure, a shelved Akai LPK25 MIDI keyboard, and stacks of CDs.
Back to the “Rip it up” part: that’s what Galaktic Rogue shows on his ‘Villainz4Life’ beat tape. No drum break or obscure groove was safe. The heavy beats are intertwined with old-school skits to tell the story of Galaktic Rogue. Well, as far as his enigmatic persona can be considered a singular storyline. As a wise metal-faced villain once said, "There's four sides to every story.”

Pitched as a conceptual beat tape battle, The Conqueror / Pelēks sees the moon-bap cinematics of Chicago’s Spectacular Diagnostics going up against Russian producer Galaktic Rogue‘s psych-tinged soundscapes. “Enter The Conquerer” kickstarts Galaktic Rogue’s opening ten tracks, which are frequently anchored by addictively murky bass tones and a series of kooky synth riffs that sound repurposed from a batch of disbanded ’70s sci-fi TV show pilot tapes. After Galaktic Rogue closes his account with the craggy distorted drums of the clattering “Fire On The Planet,” his production contemporary cues up “The Perimeter,” a track carried by groggy hypnotic bass and punched in vocal snippets that sound the alert about strange events being picked up on a radar monitor. Capping the majority of the tracks on the project at just over the one-minute mark smartly keeps its pace intact and helps to successfully cast the release as something akin to a planet-hopping experience between two distinct but interrelated sonic universes.

Swapping his trusted MPC 2000XL for a new weapon of choice is a villainous move. But what else to expect coming from the peculiar mind of Galaktic Rogue. ‘Behind The Mask’ was almost entirely produced on the SP-505, adding a new sonic layer to last year’s debut beat-tape ‘Villainz4Life.’
The essentials remained the same—superhero cartoon skits, soundtrack records, European rare grooves, and distant echoes of Madvillain, Def Jux, and ‘Donuts’-era J Dilla. But the sound diverted to something much grittier. The SP-505 achieves a more “dirty” sound, which Rogue intensified with additional effects and by recording all the beats on a vintage cassette deck.
There’s a punk attitude to that DIY, no-mercy approach to beats, as explained in the album description of 2021’s ‘Villainz4Life.’ In hindsight, when Rogue challenged Rucksack Records label mate Spectacular Diagnostics for a mano-a-mano beatmaking brawl earlier this year (leading to the double cassette ‘The Conqueror’ / ‘Peleks’), was also such a bold action.
The title ‘Behind The Mask’ might suggest that Galaktic Rogue gives a glimpse of the personality behind the super-villain mask. But listening to the beat-tape actually drags you even deeper into the wormhole portal to his strange universe.

VIDEODROME was written and recorded in the Rap Shack, with the faint green light from the tv screen lighting the faces of Rapswell and Bobby Noble. Something incredible happened that night, and people passing by the building later swore they saw a man with a glowing head babbling incoherently while a banging beat played at supersonic volume. There’s indistinct chatter during the opening segment of "S02EP01." Or is this the voice of someone losing his mind? It’s hard to hear in the backdrop of noise, with machines thumping and thrusting. Not the type of machines you’d expect in an old factory, which is the setting of the scene we find ourselves in at the start of the second season of 'Rogue TV.' The machinery here is the SP-202, SP-303, SP-505, and the SP-404SX, all thumping and thrusting; an assembly line for beats. This is the hip-hop equivalent of an industrial revolution: dark and heavy beats with absolutely no space for beauty, subtlety, or nuance.
'Rogue TV' is the soundtrack to an imaginary dystopian sci-fi television series, produced by the enigmatic yet prolific producer Galaktic Rogue. Set in a distant future, it's a clash between William Gibson's early cyberpunk novel ‘Neuromancer,’ the original Twilight Zone, and the post-apocalyptic 1968 novel 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?', which later served as the blueprint for 'Blade Runner.'
Throughout the dark and industrial sounds, there’s one moment of familiarity: the voice of Doseone on "Red Leaves." Fresh off his collaboration with Steel Tipped Dove on 'All Portrait, No Chorus' on Backwoodz Studioz, he now joins Galaktic Rogue for the main single of the album. "It's worth adding that the first collaboration with Doseone was in 2023, when he made a freestyle on one of my tracks from the first 'season' of Rogue TV," says Galaktic Rogue. "Plus the fact that I have been listening to Anticon for almost 15 years—working with Doseone was a true honor for me."
Following the cassette tape of ‘Rogue TV’ on Handsmade, Galaktic Rogue now presents ‘Rogue TV: Season 2’ on Rucksack Records. The dystopian beat-tape is a departure from his other two releases on the label: ‘VILLAINZ4LIFE’ and 'Behind The Mask.' Both are part of the Galaktus trilogy, with a third installment in the works.
