Об исполнителе
A young guitarist who plays and sings with an impressive degree of seasoned maturity and passion, Marcus King delivers a hearty mixture of soul, blues, rock, and jazz that has made him a rising star on the blues and jam band circuits. On his debut album, 2015’s Soul Insight, King and his band generated a powerful, guitar-based attack rooted in high-impact blues and Southern soul, while 2016’s The Marcus King Band took a more eclectic approach, with the more dynamic numbers revealing a gentler aspect, showing the influence of gospel and folk. 2020’s El Dorado was King’s first album as a solo act, and put a greater emphasis on his strengths as a vocalist.
Marcus King was born in Greenville, South Carolina on March 11, 1996. His father, Marvin King, was a well-known blues guitarist in South Carolina who also played with gospel acts, and his grandfather was also a regionally popular musician. Marcus was barely out of diapers when he first picked up a guitar, and at age eight, he started playing shows with his father. In his teens, he began playing out with his own band, juggling club gigs at night and school in the morning as he and his bandmates barnstormed with what they called “soul-influenced psychedelic Southern rock.” In 2015, the Marcus King Band—King on guitar and lead vocals, Alex Abercrombie on keyboards and backing vocals, Anthony House on bass, and Jack Ryan on drums—released their debut album, Soul Insight. Warren Haynes of Gov’t Mule checked the band out and liked what he heard; he tapped the Marcus King Band to open shows for Gov’t Mule and reissued Soul Insight on his Evil Teen Records label.
Haynes’ championing of the group helped spread the news about King’s music, and he soon landed a record deal with the venerable independent label Fantasy Records. Personnel shakeups led to a new lineup of the Marcus King Band, with Abercrombie and House leaving the group, while King and Ryan were joined by Stephen Campbell on bass, Matt Jennings on keyboards, Dean Mitchell on sax, and Justin Johnson on trumpet and trombone. The new edition of the Marcus King Band went into Carriage House Studios in Stamford, Connecticut, with Haynes serving as producer, and cut their second album mostly live in the studio. The Marcus King Band was released by Fantasy in October 2016, with the group touring extensively in support. A third full-length, Carolina Confessions, arrived in 2018, landing at number two on the blues albums chart. King became friends with fellow guitarist Dan Auerbach, co-founder of the Black Keys, and they teamed up to make King’s first solo album. Auerbach produced 2020’s El Dorado, recorded in Nashville with a band comprised of veteran Music City session players, while King put a greater emphasis on his impassioned vocal stylings along with his agile guitar work. (Mark Deming, AllMusic)
Об альбоме
Guitar game recognizes guitar game on the new album by Marcus King, which finds the South Carolina musician teaming up with producer and Black Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach to release King’s first solo LP, El Dorado.
Due January 17th, the album is a collection of 12 tracks, all written by King and Auerbach with songwriters like Pat McLaughlin, Paul Overstreet, and Ronnie Bowman. El Dorado also finds King backed up not by his eponymous Marcus King Band (as he was on his last effort, 2018’s Carolina Confessions), but by Auerbach’s roster of studio heavyweights, including keys player Bobby Wood, drummer Gene Chrisman, and bassist Dave Roe.
The result is an album that expands on King’s established Southern jam-rock sound. On “The Well,” the first song released from El Dorado, King embraces the blues, firing off ferocious solos and singing about the fantasy of “easy street.” In short, it doesn’t exist, but that doesn’t stop King from pining for better times.
“‘The Well’ for me symbolizes the source of all my influences. It is everything that has happened to me to make me the man I am today,” King says in a statement. (Joseph Hudak, “Marcus King Previews Dan Auerbach-Produced El Dorado with Surging ‘The Well’” Rolling Stone, 10 Oct. 2019; https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/marcus-king-el-dorado-dan-auerbach-897305/)
Six years ago, Marcus King felt lost. A long-haired, pot-smoking kid going to school in the small town of Piedmont, South Carolina, he struggled to fit in—he hated sports and missed enough classes to nearly be expelled for truancy. “I have nothing good to say about Piedmont, no good memories,” says the guitarist. “They were trying to put me away, trying to put me into a juvenile detention center, trying to shave my head, put me in a jail. And I was like, ‘I didn’t do anything. I just missed a couple days of class.’”
But it all turned out OK. King started taking classes at a local music school to study jazz, leading him to where he is now: one of the most exciting guitarists to break through in years. With a gruff, soulful rumble of a voice, a deep love of Muscle Shoals, and a fluid, rapid-fire guitar style that recalls both Duane Allman and Mountain’s Leslie West, King has been blowing minds at events like Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival and headlining big rooms like New York’s Beacon Theatre on his own. King is about to release an excellent album, El Dorado, produced and co-written with the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who had been wanting to work with him for a few years. “It’s staggering how good he is, how crazy-good his vocals are, how he can go anywhere on guitar,” says Auerbach.
King is a big, soft-spoken guy who talks with the battered wisdom of a veteran touring musician (“I love soul food, but you can’t eat that shit every day”). He comes from a long line of music lifers in South Carolina; his grandfather was a country guitarist who played with Charley Pride, and his dad was a local blues hero. “His granddad had a Gibson, his dad had a Gibson, and now Marcus has a Gibson — it’s all ingrained in his brain,” says Auerbach.
King says that music “was medicine for my family.” It turns out he means this literally: “My grandfather started having really bad ulcers, so the doctor suggested he start playing again. He never stopped again until he died.” King was playing as early as three years old, and his instrument became an important tool as he dealt with his mental health. “I’ve struggled with it since I was a kid: depression, parts of bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsive, chronic anxiety, all this stuff,” he says. Playing especially helped him get through the death of one of his close friends in middle school. “I had no way to get it out,” he says. “I needed to speak to somebody, even if it was [myself].”
King started the Marcus King Band at age 15. Within just a few years, Warren Haynes released the group’s first album. When Auerbach heard King, though, he thought his sound could translate even beyond the jam-band world. He invited King to Nashville, pushed him to record solo, and wrote songs with him on the acoustic guitar. “I think it was really nice for him to get into the studio and let his guard down, mix it up with some different musicians,” says Auerbach. “We wrote as many songs as we possibly could and just let the cream rise to the top.”
“I feel really proud of it,” King says of the new album. He talks about other highlights from the past year, including rising to the occasion at the Crossroads Festival, where he met Bill Murray, Bonnie Raitt, and Clapton, who embraced King and told him how much he loves his music. “It still doesn’t feel real at all,” King says.
King is touring throughout 2020, including opening some dates for Chris Stapleton. As his career takes off, one of his goals is to raise awareness about mental health, especially in music. “I guarantee you Otis Redding did not go to a therapist,” King says. “A lot of us tend to use music as our therapist. But sometimes it’s good to talk to a professional.”
Still, he acknowledges the strange healing effect of his guitar. “Music is kinda like your dog sometimes,” King says. “You feel like it’s the only thing that’s never hurt you. The only thing you can really trust.” (Jonathan Bernstein, “Marcus King’s True Blues,” Rolling Stone, 14 Jan. 2020; https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/marcus-king-true-blues-el-dorado-928822/)
