Hotwire was an American alternative metal band with hardcore/punk influence, formed in Newbury Park, California in 1999.
Biography
All band members met at Newbury Park High School, and after recording a few demos, they scored slots opening dates of such bands as Will Haven, Strife, Hoobastank, and Audiovent but also garnered large support at the Troubadour in Los Angeles with an extended residency spanning 6 months. In December 2000 Hotwire signed with RCA Records, and continued to tour taking slots supporting such diverse acts as Mogwai, Ben Harper, Iggy Pop and The Stooges, Björk, Darkest Hour, Bloodlet, Wu-Tang Clan, Poison The Well, Killswitch Engage, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Atreyu. In 2001/2002 the band recorded material for their debut album, which was supposed to be released later in 2002. But that release was canceled because of creative differences between the label (RCA), producer (Dave Jerden) and the band's vision. Only four songs from this record later appeared on the Hotwire's official releases. (All other songs were turned down and whole album was re-recorded with different tracklist and then released in 2003). In 2002 Hotrwire released a four-track EP before issuing their full-length album, The Routine (produced by Matt Hyde) in the summer of 2003. They followed the release of the album with a slot on the Ozzfest tour that year as well as making time for the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. A single from the album, "Not Today", was a hit on American rock radio, peaking at No. 40 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. The song "Invisible" has also become popular due to its inclusion in the soundtrack of the game Need for Speed: Underground. Despite accumulating much new material, the band broke up soon after the Ozzfest'03 tour, citing both mismanagement of funds by their management and personal reasons. Vocalist/guitarist Rus Martin (Eyelid, Chlora) joined to/formed several band, including Skyscraper Frontier, Beware The Idols, Fake Figures and Hoax Party. Guitarist Gabriel Garcia (Countervail) has released albums under the monikers The Transfatal Express, St. Malaclypse and as himself, worked as producer and engineer (Deadbirds, The Soft Hills), and scored music for several experimental films as well as collaborated on soundscapes/sound design for the Los Angeles Natural History Museum's Collapse Exhibit and Daft Punk's Electroma. Drummer Brian Borg (Mellowdrone, Insurgence) played in Deadbirds and War Widow with former guitarist Jon Peloso (Blue Equals Expired). Former bassist Dan Hartman played with The AM Project. Gabriel, Rus and Brian are now under Coming Home Records and all participate in their respective projects. Gabriel also owns Everyday Heaven recording studio.
