Gramophone Classical Music Guide 2010
The Huelgas Ensemble have recorded a masterly recital of works by Cipriano de Rore, subtitled 'Music, Mirror of the text'. That's an apt description of much of Rore's output, but the inspired and truly brilliant way in which he achieves his goal is what has left his mark upon future generations of composers. The major work of the collection is Rore's seven-part 'parody-cum-cantusfirmus' Missa Praeter rerum seriem, with its flowing melody and showers of taut little imitations. Based on a motet by Josquin and dedicated to Duke Ercole d'Este, in whose service Rore was enrolled in 1547, the composer hails his master by name in the tenor part of every movement. The remainder of the programme includes such widely different pieces as the charming little eight-part love-song Mon petit cueur, with its full canonic imitation and wonderful final cadence, and the slow-moving five-part responsary for Holy Saturday Plangequasi virgo. Another striking piece is the fourpart madrigal Calami sonum ferentes, which exploits the lowest range of the basses in slowly rising chromatic scales. But possibly the most original and forward-looking of all are the last two pieces, in which Rore promotes his own, very personal, technique of chordal homophony.
The anguished experimental Se hen il duol is a small masterpiece, and so is the fully developed motet on a text from Virgil, Dissimulare etiamsperasti. Huelgas rises to the challenge of interpreting, with colour and genius, this amazing music describing Dido's despair.
