Успех пришел к Блишу в 1950 году, когда был опубликован первый рассказ из цикла о мигрирующих по Вселенной земных городах, ставших «звездными ковчегами», — «Okie» (так звали рабочих-мигрантов из Оклахомы в 1930-е гг.); не совсем убедительная с точки зрения научной рациональности идея (отрываться от земной «тверди» и покрывать межзвездные расстояния стало возможным после открытия антигравитации, а путешествовать в космосе столетиями — после создания пилюль бессмертия) превратилась в романтический символ, позволив автору соединить космические приключения с интересными размышлениями (в духе Освальда Шпенглера) о перспективах урбанистической цивилизации. Интерес представляет миротворческая философия «оки»: «Занимайся торговлей, а не войной!». Из рассказов об «оки» впоследствии вырос цикл «Города в полете».
Необычайно плодотворными для Блиша оказались 50-е годы. Он переделал ранний рассказ «The Sunken Universe» (1942) в ставшую классической повесть «Поверхностное натяжение». Наряду с «Приходом ночи» А. Азимова, это один из самых эффектных примеров концептуального переворота, история микровселенной (в капле воды), обитатели которой эволюционировали настолько, что задумываются о «рывке» за пределы системы к другим мирам, на поиски иной жизни. Интерес Блиша к проблемам биологии (ему она обязана внедрением в современную НФ) привел писателя к концепции «пантропии» — целеустремленного «засевания» планет семенами жизни. Другому аспекту биологического «творчества» — генной инженерии — посвящен рассказ «Beanstalk» (1952), позже переписанный в роман «Titan's Daughter» (1961). Идея выведения в лабораториях людей-гигантов интересна автору как отправная точка полемики с предшественниками — Г. Уэллсом, О. Хаксли, Д. Холдейном, обратившими внимание на неизбежную социальную «плату» за вторжение в механизм наследственности.
Многие рассказы Блиша нетривиально используют трафаретные темы НФ. В рассказе «Common Time» (1953) наряду с описанием космического полета (и путешествия во времени) к Альфе Центавра есть второй план — символический; интересный, хотя и спорный фрейдистский анализ его дал Д. Найт. Путешествие во времени совершает и герой рассказа «Произведение искусства» (1956) — Рихард Штраус, любимый композитор Блиша; побывав в будущем, он понимает: главное «произведение искусства» — он сам, его талант. А ясновидящему из рассказа «Би-и-ип!» (1954) воспользоваться информацией из будущего помешали не учтенные им «хроноклазмы». В 1957 году Джеймс Блиш получил специальную премию Хъюго как «многообещающий молодой автор».
Самый известный роман Блиша — «Дело совести» [A Case of Conscience] (1958), — справедливо причислен к классике НФ. Наряду с «Песнью по Лейбовицу» У. Миллера это одно из самых глубоких художественных исследований проблем религии средствами НФ. Герой романа — иезуит, включенный в состав экспедиции на планету, населенную мирными разумными рептилиями . Выполнение им своей пасторской задачи — нести Слово Божье в иные миры — наталкивается на мучительные метафизические и теологические вопросы, не стоявшие перед сочинителями «основополагающих» книг. Как можно спасти грешную душу тех, кто не мог знать первородного греха «по определению» (яйцекладущие)? И не наводит ли внешний вид этих созданий на страшную мысль, что не дети они Божьи, а, напротив, исчадия дьявола? Отчаянный акт «космического экзорцизма» (по сути уничтожения того, что не способен постичь), совершенный священником, становится трагическим символом бессилия разума, опутанного догмами.
Также Блишем были написаны произведения в жанре детской НФ и произведения-новеллизации телесериала «Звездный путь».
Конец жизни Блиш провел в Англии, где, несмотря на тяжелую болезнь, стоял у истоков создания «Фонда НФ» (Science Fiction Foundation) — профессиональной гильдии британских писателей-фантастов.

—J. ROBERT OPPENHETMER THE SHADOWS flickered on the walls to his left and right, just inside the edges of his vision, like shapes stepping quickly back into invisible doorways. Despite his bone-deep weariness, they made him nervous, almost made him wish that Dr. Corsi would put out the fire. Nevertheless, he remained staring into the leaping orange light, feeling the heat tightening his cheeks and the skin around his eyes, and soaking into his chest.
Corsi stirred a little beside him, but Senator Wagoner’s own weight on the sofa seemed to have been increasing ever since he had first sat down. He felt drained, lethargic, as old and heavy as a stone despite his forty-eight years; it had been a bad day in a long succession of bad days. Good days in Washington were the ones you slept through.
Next to him Corsi, for all that he was twenty years older, formerly Director of the Bureau of Standards, formerly Director of the World Health Organization, and presently head man of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (usually referred to in Washington as “the left-wing Triple A-S”), felt as light and restless and quick as a chameleon.
“I suppose you know what a chance you’re taking, coming to see me,” Corsi said in his dry, whispery voice. “I wouldn’t be in Washington at all if I didn’t think the interests of the AAAS required it. Not after the drubbing I’ve taken at MacHinery’s hands. Even outside the government, it’s like living in an aquarium—in a tank labelled ‘Pirhana.’ But you know about all that.”

A Case of Conscience
BOOK ONEITHE stone door slammed. It was Cleaver’s trade-mark: there had never been a door too heavy, complex, or cleverly tracked to prevent him from closing it with a sound like a clap of doom. And no planet in the universe could possess an air sufficiently thick and curtained with damp to muffle that sound—not even Lithia.
Father Ramon Ruiz-Sanchez, late of Peru, and always Clerk Regular of the Society of Jesus, professed father of the four vows, continued to read. It would take Paul Cleaver’s impatient fingers quite a while to free him from his jungle suit, and in the meantime the problem remained. It was a century-old problem, first propounded in 1939, but the Church had never cracked it. And it was diabolically complex (that adverb was official, precisely chosen, and intended to be taken literally.) Even the novel which had proposed the case was on the Index Expurgatorius, and Father Ruiz-Sanchez had spiritual access to it only by virtue of his Order.
