Built by more than 20,000 worked between 1848 and 1854, the 41km (25 mile)
Semmeringbahn (Semmering Railway) was the first standard gauge mountain railway ever
constructed and is considered the first 'true' mountain railway, due to its immense change in
altitude and challenging terrain it traverses throughout the route.
Connecting the Austrian towns of Mürzzuschlag and Gloggnitz in the east of the country, the
Semmeringbahn features some of the most stunning railway scenery seen anywhere in the
world – two-storey high viaducts, more than 100 stone bridges, 16 tunnels and 11 iron
bridges are prominent throughout the route. The line itself sees a 457m altitude difference in
its 41km in length, and 60% of the track is on a 2-2.5% (around 1:40) gradient, with as much
as 16% featuring very tight radius curves at only 190m.
From Gloggnitz in the east, the line passes through a number of small hamlets high in the
mountainous Alps to Payerbach-Reichenau, where local passenger services from Vienna
terminate. It is here that one of the Alps' major ski resorts is located, as well as a heritage
railway running in the mountains. Heading southwards, the line crosses the stunning
Schwarza Viaduct before Küb and Klamm-Schottwein, where the landscape is most famous
for the expansive S6 motorway viaduct.
Between Klamm-Schottwein and Breitenstein, trains pass through probably the most famous
part of the route, The Viaduct – a spectacular open-sided tunnel that provides a
photographer's dream setting. From Semmering (the highest point on the route), the line
heads downhill towards Mürzzuschlag, where large freight yards and a locomotive
maintenance and servicing yard dominate.
At the time of opening, the incredible grades and tight curves resulted in the need for new
locomotives that could more easily handle the task. Thus, a competition was held to find
traction that was able to traverse the grades and curves while maintaining a minimum speed
of 11.5km/h (7mph).
Eventually, the railway settled for the Engerth locomotive, a unique articulated tender
locomotive that had a top speed of 19km/h (11mph) up the steepest gradients thanks to the
weight of the fuel and water being spread across all the axles, providing more traction.
The increased accessibility to the mountains thanks to the railway saw a number of purpose-
built Alpine resorts, with parts of the railway becoming known for their summer orientated
architecture such as hotels and villas. It also lead to the construction of residential areas,
creating a new form of landscape not usually seen on mountainous terrain.
Today, the line is owned and operated by the Austrian Federal Railways some 160 years after
its construction and plays a key role in connecting Vienna and Graz as part of the ÖBB
Southern Railway. It was also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998.
However, despite the fantastic scenery, towering bridges, challenging grades and rich history,
a new 27.3km (16 mile) tunnel is being constructed under the mountains to bypass the
Semmeringbahn, and is expected to open in 2024.
Included with this primarily freight route is a Class 1116 in ÖBB Livery, Habbins bogie van
wagons, Zags bogie tanker wagons, SGGRSS container wagons, TDRRS two-axle hopper
wagons and Bmz Eurofima coaches.

The ÖBB 1044 electric locomotive was built by ELIN, Siemens Mobility, Brown, Boveri & Cie.
and Simmering-Graz-Pauker in the mid-1970s as a powerful solution to Austria's challenging
rail network, being able to haul heavy freight or bustling passenger services anywhere from
heaving cities to rural mountain passes with ease. With such a wide range of possibility, the
ÖBB 1044 quickly became the backbone of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) fleet and
would remain so until the turn of the 21st Century.
Such a variety of operations was possible thanks to the powerful 6,710 hp motors, these
delivered well over 200 kN of tractive effort to the bogies of the ÖBB 1044 making them the
most powerful 4 axle electric locomotives in the world. Following modifications to the intake
vents to ensure reliability in the harsher winter months, the ÖBB 1044 was unstoppable in its
power and network wide accessibility.
The ÖBB 1044 continued on as the backbone of the Austrian Federal Railways fleet until the
year 2000, by which time a batch of Siemens EuroSprinter locomotives were ordered to assist
and eventually replace them. Instead of scrapping the locomotives, they were sent to be
converted into ÖBB 1144 locomotives, built for regional push-pull passenger services. The
heritage behind the classic ÖBB 1044 is not only continued by the 1144s, but also the
prototype which was preserved in its original form at the Railway Museum in Strasshof in
2002.
The 1044 for Train Simulator includes liveries with both old and new ÖBB logo designs and
Hbbills freight wagons.

First designed in the 1990s, the Talent truly is the forefront of modern European
transportation for both passengers and drivers alike. With such sparks as the ever-successful
Talent 2 in its legacy, the Austrian Federal Railway can be proud of operating such a uniquely
versatile EMU. Be prepared to experience this modern passenger workhorse for yourself as
the ÖBB 4023, from Partner Programme developer RSSLO, is now ready for service in this Pro
Series Add-On for Train Simulator.
ÖBB ordered their Talent EMUs from Bombardier in the early 2000s as a modern helper to
their ageing ÖBB 4020 fleet. While a majority of the order was comprised of the four-car
variant, the ÖBB 4024, a handful of three-car variants were also part of the bill. The three-car
Talents were classified as the ÖBB 4023 and were designed to serve more rural routes where
passenger numbers were lower and platforms were not suitable for their longer siblings.
After addressing comfort issues raised by the passengers, the ÖBB 4023 was a network-wide
success. Its powerful nature and generous capacity made them ideally suited for routes such
as the Semmeringbahn, being able to effortlessly crawl up and down the winding rails in all
conditions.
The ÖBB 4023 provides a very smooth journey thanks to its shared Jacob's bogies, both
reducing drag and increasing safety at the same time. When combined with a streamlined
profile, the ÖBB 4023 set foot in a new era of efficiency while traversing the Austrian
landscape. It will not be long until this experience will be wholly your own, as the ÖBB 4023
will be coming to Train Simulator.

The ÖBB 4010 provided a long-distance express service between Vienna and Zurich in the
form of the 'Transalpin'. Simmering-Graz-Pauker rolled three of the new train sets, classified
as the ÖBB 4010, off the production line in 1965. Formed of a power car, cab car and four
intermediate coaches fitted with first and second class throughout, the new fleet would
quickly revolutionise luxury rail travel and would serve the route all the way into the mid-
2000s.
Getting familiar with the cab of the ÖBB 4010 is key to success. Being a design from the
1960s, it features many classic dials, switches and controls which, while modern for the time,
contrast quite considerably with the multiple units of today. With of-the-era rudimentary
systems on-board, starting up the ÖBB 4010 is a fairly easy procedure once you know where
the relevant controls are; simply raise the pantograph, turn on the main switch, select your
intended direction of travel, set the lights up appropriately and you're good to go.
Where the level of complexity increases aboard the ÖBB 4010 is in its driving wheel. When
mastered, getting just the right amount of power out of the multiple unit, and knowing how to
change it, means a hassle-free journey and a smooth ride for the passengers.
Despite being retired just over 9 years ago, the ÖBB 4010s history culminated in a 3-decade
express service history, and time as famed traction throughout the Alpine region. And in Train
Simulator the tale of the ÖBB 4010 can be yours to continue, as RSSLO's absolutely crafted
rendition arrives for virtual service!

1991, with the fall of the Iron Curtain which had divided Europe since the end of the Second
World War, many changes to traffic took place throughout affected nations. New cross-border
and inter-city route opportunities were able to be considered, and the Austrian Federal
Railways (ÖBB) sought to take this opportunity to procure new and able traction.
Existing locomotives, such as the ÖBB 1063, were capable of crossing borders, however their
limitation was top speed, rendering any form of express services impossible. To work around
this, a development of the ÖBB 1146 was specified, resulting in a new series of electric
locomotives, capable of 175 km/h, to be built between 1993 and 1994. These new locos, of
which 18 were delivered, were classified as the ÖBB 1014.
The ÖBB 1014s were unlike anything else seen before them, with traditional looks swapped
out for an all-new, modern design, fitting for express traffic into the 21st Century. The fleet of
ÖBB 1014s originally worked out of Vienna, however they would soon be seen across Austria,
frequently visiting enamouring countries on cross-border passenger and freight services, as
well as heading more local duties.
Despite their success in service, the ÖBB 1014s were also considered a very unnecessary and
expensive purchase; with such a small number in operation, the decision was made to retire
the fleet in 2009, only half way through their intended service life. They remained stored for
several years, before finally being shipped to Romania in 2016 for a new life in pastures new.
