One of the busiest routes on the British rail network springs to life in the stunning East Coast
Main Line London-Peterborough route for Train Simulator, featuring the classic High Speed
Train and commuter Class 365 EMU.
The East Coast Main Line was originally built by three railway companies in the mid-1800s –
the North British Railway, North Eastern Railway and Great Northern Railway - each
constructing their own section but with the intention of linking up to form a through route
from London to Scotland, later to become known as the East Coast Main Line.
The full ECML covers 393 miles (632km) from London King's Cross to Edinburgh, passing
through Peterborough, Doncaster, York, Darlington and Newcastle. It forms a key artery on
the eastern side of the UK and broadly runs parallel to the A1 trunk road. Classed as a high
speed line, as it mostly meets the speed criteria of 125mph (201km/h), the route handles
cross-country, commuter and local passenger services, and is a primary route for heavy
tonnage of freight traffic between the north and south of the UK.
Electrification of the route was authorised in 1984 and work began in 1985. The first
electrified section between London and Leeds opened for operational trials in 1988, and was
the fastest main line in the UK until the opening of High Speed 1 in 2003.
The route for Train Simulator takes in the 76 mile (122 km) section of the ECML from London
to Peterborough. Starting out at the busy London King's Cross station, a large hub for long
distance and outer-suburban services, the route winds its way slowly out of the sprawling
Capital and, passing Finsbury Park and Alexandra Palace.
As the route opens up into Hertfordshire, the four track line passes through Potters Bar,
Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City and Hitchin, before terminating in Peterborough. Significant
landmarks along the route also include the striking Alexandra Palace, the Emirates Stadium
(home to Arsenal Football Club), Digswell Viaduct, Gasworks Tunnel at King's Cross,
Copenhagen Tunnels, Bounds Green train maintenance depot, and Peterborough's large
freight yard and Post Office depot.
Also included with the route is the popular High Speed Train, complete with Class 43
locomotives and full coach consist, and the commuter Class 365 EMU in First Capital
Connect livery, a train which is seen on outer-suburban services between London,
Peterborough and beyond.
Whether you are looking for high speed running or the more serene stopping commuter
services along the route of the famous Flying Scotsman, the East Coast Main Line London-
Peterborough route for Train Simulator is filled with challenging drives and magnificent
scenery across the UK's capital and Home Counties.

Considered to be one of the most reliable and trouble-free EMUs of the Mk3 family, the Class
321 is a popular commuter train operated by a number of companies across the UK, and now
available for Train Simulator in First Capital Connect livery.
Based on the British Rail Mk3 body shape, the Class 321 EMU was originally built for the
Network Southeast sector by BREL York between 1998 and 1991. Three sub-classes were
built, the 321/3 and 321/4 for Network Southeast, and the 321/9 for services around the
Leeds area.
In total, 117 four-car train sets were built with a top speed of 100mph (161km/h), powered
by AC 25kV overhead electric via a pantograph fitted to the PMSO vehicle. The design of
these train sets was also considered so successful that it led to the development of the
similar Class 320 and Class 322.
Following privatization of the British rail network, the Class 321s were transferred to a
number of operators, including London Midland, Greater Anglia, Northern Rail and First
Capital Connect; 13 remain in traffic with FCC.
The Class 321 EMU for Train Simulator is available in First Capital Connect livery and features
passenger view, cab and instrument lighting, and a full four-car consist, comprising of DTCO,
PMSO, TSO and DTSO passenger vehicles.

The flagship locomotive for the East Coast Main Line, the Class 91, speeds into Train
Simulator in its original InterCity Swallow livery, complete with Mk4 coaches and Driving Van
Trailer.
The Class 91 was built as a development of the Advanced Passenger Train (APT) project,
which was abandoned during the 1980s, and was introduced in 1988 with the overhead
electrification of the East Coast Main Line; the first Class 91 to work a passenger service was
on 3 March 1989 with a rake of Mk3 coaches and a converted Class 43 power car acting as a
Driving Van Trailer (DVT).
The locomotive's body shells were built of an all-steel construction, and unusually were fitted
with body mounted motors to reduce the unsprung mass and hence track wear at high
speeds. Much of the engineering was derived from research and operational experience
garnered during development of the APT.
Given the auxiliary name of InterCity 225, a nod to their designed operating speed of 225
km/h (140mph), the Class 91 exclusively works flagship high speed passenger services on
the East Coast Main Line between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley, leading a
rake of nine Mk4 passenger coaches and a Mk4 DVT. Realistically, services only run at
125mph (201 km/h) due to the track infrastructure, but occasionally do reach their designed
top speed to make up time.
The Class 91 for Train Simulator is available in InterCity Swallow livery as carried between
1988 and 1996, and features two fully working driving cabs, complete with DRA, AWS and
vigilance device reset, and cruise control. The Mk4 DVT also includes a fully driveable cab,
giving complete push-pull capabilities to the train. A full rake of nine Mk4 coaches in
accompanying InterCity Swallow livery replicate the full InterCity 225 service, complete with
passenger view.

The iconic Class 180 'Adelante' speeds into Train Simulator in distinctive Grand Central Trains
livery.
The five-car sets were built by Alstom at their Washwood Heath plant between 2000 and
2001 for First Great Western, who wanted to increase the frequency of their express services
between London Paddington and South Wales, and became part of the Coradia 1000 family,
alongside the popular Class 175.
Nicknamed 'Adelante' by First Group, the Class has had a chequered career, being late into
service in the early 2000s and returns to their leasing company, Angel Trains, ahead of
schedule in 2009. Subsequently, they were assigned to other train operators and in 2012,
five sets were refurbished by First Great Western.
In total, only 14 sets were built and despite their reliability problems, are still in operation
today for Grand Central Trains, First Great Western and First Hull Trains. They are capable of
reaching 125 mph (201 km/h) thanks to a Cummins QSK19 diesel engine, identical to the
engine fitted to the Class 220 'Voyager'. The 'Adelante' is also unique in being the only
diesel-powered high speed train in the World that has a diesel-hydraulic transmission.
The Class 180 'Adelante' for Train Simulator is available in Grand Central Trains' black livery
and includes features usually seen on high speed trains, including signal bell, open/close
coupling hatch, DRA, instrument lights, glare panel, headlight control, vehicle overspeed,
brake gauge, DSD reset pedal and working TMS system.

Master the controls of the last surviving Peppercorn A2 Class locomotive, Blue Peter, and
return this famous locomotive to the rails in Train Simulator.
The Arthur Peppercorn designed A2 Class locomotive is the sole survivor of the 15
locomotives in the class, built at Doncaster Works between 1947 and 1948. The design was
a move towards modernity, with features such as a self-cleaning smokebox and electric
lighting prominent in the out-shopped locomotives.
The class was designed for express passenger work and all locomotives were initially turned
out in LNER's apple green livery, with repainting into British Railways' Brunswick green livery
beginning in 1949.
With the exception of the first A2 Class to enter service, all locomotive names followed
LNER's tradition of using famous racehorse names – Blue Peter III was a racehorse owned by
Harry Primrose, 6th Earl of Roseberry, which in 1939 won races including the Epsom Derby
and the 2000 Guineas.
Blue Peter served on the mainline until 31 December 1966, two years before the end of
British steam, and put into storage. However, in 1968 the locomotive was purchased by
enthusiast Geoff Drury and a campaign for its restoration was launched on the famous British
children's television programme and locomotive-namesake Blue Peter.
The locomotive is now owned by the Royal Scot Locomotive and General Trust and awaiting
restoration and renewal of its mainline boiler certificate at the famous Barrow Hill
Roundhouse in Derbyshire, before returning back to mainline standard.
The Peppercorn Class A2 Blue Peter for Train Simulator recreates the famous locomotive in
its current Brunswick Green livery with British Railways on the tender sides and blue-faced
nameplates, as it ran between 1996 and 2001. As a preserved locomotive in the modern era,
the locomotive is fitted with modern safety systems such as AWS, and also comes with BR
Mk1 coaches with passenger view.
