York Höller was born in Leverkusen and studied from 1963–70 in Cologne with Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Herbert Eimert, and Alfons Kontarsky, among others. His participation in Pierre Boulez’s analysis seminars at the 1965 Darmstadt Summer Courses motivated him to explore serial music. After temporary employment at the Bonn Opera House, he worked in 1971/72 in the West German Radio’s Studio for Electronic Music, whose artistic director he was from 1990 to 2000.
A series of works, which are distinguished by a synthesis of instrumental/vocal and electronic or computer-generated sounds, brought Höller to international attention in the 1970s. Höller’s special connection to French musical life began with the invitation to Paris’ IRCAM in 1978, and found its tentative climax in 1989 with the successful premiere, acclaimed by the French theater and music critics, of The Master and Margarita at the Opéra de Paris.
In the 1980s, Höller also completed a number of purely acoustical pieces, among which the First Piano Concerto and the orchestral work Magische Klanggestalt are among the most frequently performed. He taught for many years in Cologne as well as in Freiburg, England, and Finland, became Professor of Composition at Berlin’s “Hanns Eisler” Conservatory in 1993, and was appointed professor at the Cologne Conservatory in 1995. Höller has received numerous awards, and many works were written as commissions from prominent ensembles, for example, Fanal for Ensemble InterContemporain, Aura for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Gegenklänge for Ensemble Modern. In 1999 Höller composed the orchestral work Aufbruch on the occasion of the German Parliament’s move to Berlin.
Recent compositions are Der ewige Tag for chorus, orchestra, and electronics (2002), Klangzeichen for piano and winds (2003), Feuerwerk for sixteen instrumentalists (2004), Fluchtpunkte for flute, English horn, clarinet, piano, and percussion (2006), and the orchestral piece Sphären (premiered in 2008 by the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne under the direction of Semyon Bychkov) for which he received the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition in 2010.
Besides numerous other international commissions for compositions, scholarships, guest lectureships, and honors, Höller was awarded membership in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic. Since 1991 he has been a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts, and since 2006 a member of the Free Academy of the Arts in Hamburg. A book about the composer appeared in the series “Musik der Zeit” in honor of his sixtieth birthday.--Neos
