Michael Bastian Weiß
Michael Bastian Weiß has discovered the subject-matter of his life in the richly-layered relationship between art and science, between music and philosophy. He lives in Munich as a composer and philosopher. Born in the lower Bavarian town of Deggendorf in 1974, he first studied musicology in Munich, finishing with a Master’s thesis on the theory of the author in the middle ages. For his PhD, which he received in 2004, he switched to philosophy.
He simultaneously studied composing, receiving his artistic diploma in 2005 and his Meisterklassendiplom in 2007. As a philosopher, he is a student of the philosopher Günter Zöller, and as a composer, he is a student of the composer Hans-Jürgen von Bose. Apart from articles for lexicons and essays on philosophical, music and literary topics, Michael Bastian Weiß has published, among others, a study on aesthetic theory entitled Der Autor als Individuum. Die Wende zum Subjekt in Philosophie und Kunst des 18. Jahrhunderts (The Author as Individual. The Turn to the Subject in 18th Century Philosophy and Art, Hildesheim 2007). He teaches philosophy in Munich and Eichstätt and is currently writing his Habilitation on the late theoretical philosophy of J. G. Fichte.
His compositional work comprises vocal and instrumental chamber and orchestra music, as well as musical theatre. During his university studies his opera project, Vielleicht war ich ein Azteke, which reworks the case of a cannibalistic serial killer into a large-scale musical theatre piece, and for which he wrote the libretto himself, was honoured with an award from the First International Opera Workshop at Schloss Rheinsberg and parts of it were performed. Moreover, he has received compositional commissions from the ADevantgarde Festival, the Siemens Kulturstiftung, and the Basel festival “les muséiques”.
In conclusion, Weiß was granted a scholarship by the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes, and obtained the Deggendorfer Kulturpreis, as well as the Musikstipendium der Landeshauptstadt München. The jury especially singled out his talent for “extraordinarily creative approaches”. “Time and time again his pieces examine archaic and archetypal structures, and seek their mirrored reflections in today’s society. The inherent tension of his works is derived from their confrontation with existential and marginalized domains, with bloodthirsty, cruel, demented and sexually deviate or grotesque forms of existence, to then reverberate back in a nuanced, multi-layered and evocative musical language.”
