The latest release from The Remote Viewer's Moteer label sees John McCaffrey (a constituent part of
Clickits) going it alone for his debut record under his autonomous moniker of Part Timer. Sounding like a
lost English Folk classic, the eponymous LP is a dusty coalition of tender melodies and faded
compositions that reveal their vibrant history through subtle flourishes - with McCaffrey instinctively
knowing when to leave something out as much as put something in. Opening through 'Unwritten Letter To
No. 9', some tape treated guitar is teased into life atop a skipping stone of electronics and warm melodies,
with an intimate atmosphere crafted from the hearth-like ingredients. Taking this tender atmosphere and
giving it a vocal axis courtesy of the Empress' Nicola Hodgkinson, 'We Made A Big Mistake' is up next and
provides a definite highlight - as a water-clogged batch of instrumentation is sent swirling by the poignant
lyrics and subtle production flourishes that are best seen from the corner of your eye. Sharing an evident
heritage with the likes of Mum and The Boats, 'We Made A Big Mistake' also gives a nod to the aural lint of
Jan Jelinek et al. - a situation made all the more pronounced by the next track 'Daytona'. Easing you in
through a flutter of mealy crackles, a delicate guitar is soon given room to blossom - never quite peaking
as you expect and as such instilling proceedings with a fabulously piquant sense of something being not
quite right. Elsewhere, 'Thinking, Unthinking' is another vocal cut that sees the lyrics being spun backwards
and forwards to satisfying effect, 'Hear... To Something' is an energetic coming together of EFX, acoustics
and ribald beats (think Four Tet's 'Tangle'), whilst 'It Only Means' slips in some old-skool female vocals
amongst it's thicket of thrumming instrumentation.

Trust these immaculate Japanese imprints to bring us some of the most beautiful homespun music we've
heard this year, and even though Part Timer is the work of Moteer's John McCaffrey, everything about this
gorgeous cd evokes the spirit and wide-eyed mystery of Japan, presumably why Tokyo's Flau label has
given it a home. Treading that sublime line between lonesome acoustic composition and delicate
electronic tampering, the sound of Part Timer will be familiar to those of you enamoured with the music
made by the likes of Helios, The Remote Viewer and Tunng, covered in that misty-eyed sheen that cant
help but tug at the heartstrings without ever coming across as overly emotional. Album opener "theme
from Part Timer" is just sublime, some old recordings of a long forgotten day out at the beach shimmer
away in the background while a resonant acoustic guitar provides the emotional backbone around which
delicate strings and timeless chord progressions suck you into a world of blissful nostalgia. "Hide All You
Like" is the first of a couple of tracks featuring the instantly recognisable vocals of Nicola Hodgkinson (of
Empress fame), and with a detached melancholy her voice drags this material into another dimension,
away from the more familiar confines of instrumental music and into the same kind of musical domain
inhabited by the likes of the aforementioned Tunng. "Sudden Loss" is another standout piece, a lonely violin
and prepared acoustic guitar nervously igniting the track into a blissful musical arrangement not unlike
something out of Bruce Langhorne's gorgeous soundtrack for "The Hired Hand", with only the odd digital
Malfunction betraying the music's 21st century origins. "Blue" is just a gorgeous album, produced with a
singular musical vision that's impossible not to adore, layered with a plethora of homespun musical
signatures that transcend any kind of laptop music you could think of, and housed in the kind of typically
lavish Japanese packaging that makes it utterly irresistible. Gorgeous music - brought to you with a
massive recommendation.

Andrew Tuttle, who is Anonymeye, used to
live in Brisbane; John McCaffrey, who is
Part Timer, used to live in Northern
England; both now live in Melbourne.
This is more relevant to this split CD-R
than it may seem: the four tracks on
Silhouettes 3 (one from Tuttle and three
from McCaffrey) all deal, consciously or
otherwise, with the notion of
displacement and the peculiarities of
belonging.
Tuttle’s contribution, a ten-minute
improvisation titled ‘Stop 122, Line
1/8’, sees his folky fingerpicking
become (not cruelly) subjected to a raft
of real-time effects and signal
processing. The track revels in
imperfection – as Tuttle slowly builds
its rhythmic skeleton by layering and
looping his playing, his every minor
stumble (this is improv, after all) is
given tenure, maintaining the acoustic
guitar’s inherent humanity even as it is
almost subsumed by waves of crackling
digital feedback.
Similarly, Part Timer smashes apart the
fundamental elements of folksong and
reassembles them into frail collages.
His three tracks are an eclectic
collection, from the ghostly vocals and
chopped-up guitar of ‘Asthmatic Throat
Clutching’ to the almost Telefon Tel
Aviv-esque ‘Upbeat And Happy People Make
Bad Company’ (awesome title, that).
‘Between Decisions’ is the disc’s most
straightforward piece: McCaffrey applies
the subtlest nips and tucks to a bright,
summery guitar line and lays the results
over the top of distant, clattery field
recordings. It’s so, so simple and yet –
like the other three tracks here – so
incredibly beautiful that’s it’s hard
not to declare it a small slice of
genius.

On this new Under The Spire EP, Part
Timer remixes original tracks composed
by that other Boomkat favourite, Aaron
Martin, resulting in six folksy
rewirings of the cellist/producer's
material. Something that strikes you
very early on is just how seamless a
collaboration this appears to be - it
sounds like it could have been a new set
of works by Martin, produced by Part
Timer's John McCaffrey with his
customary workshop clatter, and potting
shed electroacoustics colouring the
compositions. At the more subtle end of
this you get the likes of 'Terrace
(Grand View)' and 'Climbing Into Water
(Drowned)', whose lilting, crackly cello
tones swell with an almost vintage
sounding warmth, while on 'Shot Tower
(Hot Lead)' you hear more rhythm-
oriented construction holding the piece
together, resulting in the kind of
patchwork electronica Part Timer spins
when left to his own devices. This isn't
the duo's first collaboration, and they
clearly work well together; at no point
during this six-track mini album would
you really think of it as a 'remix'
record, such is the very organic
assemblage of the record and the homely
compositional style at the heart of
everything. This is limited to 200

     Featuring one cd featuring new material from Australian
     cellist, sound sculptor and sometime Machinefabriek

     seems tailor-made for this super distinctive label, although
     Martin's pieces must surely rank as the most "grown up" and
     jawdropping on the label yet. Deploying sparse yet incredibly
     rich acoustic arrangements dominated by Cello, guitar, banjo,
     found sounds and laptop, it's on the more sparse numbers, such
     as the simply breathtaking "Nureyev", that you really get a
     sense of just how accomplished and inspired a musician Martin
     is, effortlessly engaging classical discipline with a rich
     understanding of contemporary measures without ever sounding
     contrived. It's just the sort of beautiful, often ageless
     music that it's just impossible to argue with. Mr Mccaffrey,
     meanwhile, spreads his considerable talent across the second
     6-track cd, carefully re-working the source material into a
     shimmering arrangement of crackle, hiss and even the odd vocal
     edit that lends the originals a sense of wonder and
     otherworldliness that's so typical of his output ever since
     his remarkable debut EP as one half of the Clickits a good few
     years back. Overall, what you get here is 43 minutes of
     genuinely wondrous music, lovingly crafted and packaged by
     people who genuinely care about making you happy. An
     absolutely essential purchase.

This self-released outing from the Part
Timer camp finds main man John McCaffrey
teaming up with Heidi Elva and repeat
collaborator Aaron Martin, plus a list
of remixers that boasts Orla Wren,
Humble Bee, The Green Kingdom, Scissors
And Sellotape, Children Of The Wave and
the curiously billed Jazzy Jones Is
Nano. The original piece features Elva
on harp and vocals with Martin providing
a typically lovely cello contribution.
These elements all add greatly to the
Part Timer sound, and while the core
effect of McCaffrey's rundown,
heartbreaking lo-fi stylings remains
very much true to the form of his prior
releases, 'The Runner' must surely stand
as his most sonically alluring outing to
date. Elva's voice seems lost and
detached in the mix, but this only seems
to empower the emotional pull of the
track; the ensuing reinterpretations
capitalise on the strong raw ingredients
too, with Orla Wren's take up first,
very much occupying the same mindset as
its source - this sounds like a
sharpening up and streamlining of the
original, something echoed by the more
beat-focussed overhaul by The Green
Kingdom. Things start to dissolve into a
more abstract framework by the time we
reach the Scissors And Sellotape
version, opting for a droning, looped
formation, and the lulling haze
continues to amass when Children Of The
Wave take the reins, stripping 'The
Runner' to its barest components and
avoiding building up too far. In a
sense, this album flows together like a
single, thirty-seven minute song divided
into seven movements. All the artists
involved are very much on the same page
and all seem to be working towards a
similar goal. The crackle and tuneful
static imagery of the Humble Bee mix
comes next, only consolidating this idea
- in fact, if there is an all-out
mould-breaker on the album it must
surely be the comparatively raucous,
brass and glitch-beat assault laid on by
Jazzy Jones Is Nano, who compensate for
that ludicrous moniker with the most
inventive and irreverent of all the
reinterpretations. Severely limited
(just 80 copies) so move fast or miss
out....

The music of Part Timer has a rare kind
of stillness and beauty, an ambient
pastoral folk that evokes sunshine
glistening through dew on a cold winters
morning. His music is the antidote to
bluster, an opportunity to step away
from the noise and freneticism of daily
life and sink into a world of stately
simplicity. It moves along like a gentle
exhale of breath, a lush, sublime,
shimmering beauty, evolving slowly, the
gentle strumming of guitar, low organ
drones, melodica, glockenspiel, ukulele
or tin whistles, all flowing together
like a hushed whisper designed solely
for your ears. Then there’s these
understated electronic flourishes that
skitter around the edges, an earthy
organic form of digitalia that
occasionally provides a certain textural
density to the tunes, like a frequency
beamed in from afar.
Part Timer is the alias of John
McCaffrey, a Northern Englander now
based in Melbourne Australia. He’s
amassed a slew of releases for UK’s
Moteer & Mobeer label, Under the Spire,
and Japan’s Flau respectively, whilst
also releasing two albums of electronica
in his duo Clickits with Jonny Russell.
Yet Real to Reel is an unmistakable
progression in his craft. Recorded over
the last few years it’s less beat
orientated than it’s predecessors, a
suite of loose rustling electro organic
soundscapes, over which the likes of
Nicola Hodgkinson from Leeds three piece
Empress, Melbourne songstress Heidi Elva
(who also contributes harp), and John’s
wife Danielle intone gracefully. In fact
there’s a greater balance of vocal to
instrumental pieces than ever before. He
also enlists extraordinary Kansas based
artist Aaron Martin who contributes
mournful cello, providing additional
gravity to McCaffrey’s introspective
musings.
Ultimately Real to Reel is music for
waiting, for opening up time and
creating space, allowing the listener to
enjoy each delicate gesture, each subtle
movement. It’s gorgeous drifting music,
thirteen mesmerizing pieces that offer a
gentle emotion laden respite from the
bustle and bluster of daily life.
