Back To Peru As the sub-title indicates, Back to Peru is ambitious in scope, aiming to provide a broad overview of the Peruvian underground rock scene spanning 1964-74. Loosely chronological in sequence, the compilers allowed themselves only one selection by each band or artist, resulting in a wild assortment of styles and genres, ranging from crude garage and instrumental rock to heavy psych, pop and Latin funk. Side One starts the whole thing off on the right foot with Los Saicos' rowdy "Demolicion" from 1964, following it up with more fine garage and Beat sounds from 1964-67 by the likes of Los Atomos, Los Termits and Los Yorks whose extended stomp "Abrazame Baby" (a screaming cross between "Mercy Mercy" and "Hang on Sloopy") is particularly boss. Los Golden Stars turn Alvin Robinson's "Let the Good Times Roll" into a groovin R&B instro of their own "Tema de Los Golden Stars," and things start getting psychier with Texao's Hendrix-inspired freakout "Stone" and Los Mutables fuzz-wah intro workout "Pasos En La Luna," both from 1967. Side Two is quite heavy on the instrumentals too, with tracks from 1966-70, including Los Holy's rough and cool "Holy's Psicodelicos," Los Belkings' fuzz instro version of "Black is Black," semi-instro go-go sounds by Hot Butter, spaghetti surf by Los Doltons and straightahead Shadows-style rock by Los Jaguars with "Melodia Apache." There's vocals too, including Los 007, whose haunting harmonies, garagey guitar licks and groovy percussion additions make "No Te Puedo Encontrar" one of this set's standouts. "Summertime" would not have been my choice for the most representative track by Los Shains, but it's a good atmospheric version with an interesting guitar break. By Side Three we're in post-garage territory with hard rock and psychedelic sounds from 1968-72. The St Thomas Pepper Smelter do a fine version of the Rugbys' "You, I," while more great hard'n'heavy sounds are provided by the New Juggler Sound ("Glue"), Smog ("Wicked Man") and Laghonia with the thoroughly psychedelic "World Full of Nuts." Providing a pleasant contrast, there's the mellow late-period Beatles-inspired pop of We All Together ("Carry On Till Tomorrow," not their best), and Illicit with the memorable "Realize." By Side Four things we're up to our knees in the early 1970s with the funkier Latin Rock sounds of groups like Telegraph Avenue and Pax - all well executed but of less interest to most UT readers, including myself. Perhaps sensing this, the compilers throw a killer psych cut in the middle of the side, Traffic Sound's "Meshkalina" from their brilliant 1969 album Virgin. While not everything here will be to everyone's taste, Back to Peru is extremely well thought out and put together. The mastering is first rate, as is the packaging, a heavy-duty glossy gatefold loaded with rare photos, though the liners, unfortunately, are in Spanish only.
