Nowhere is the diversity of Israel more evident than in its music. A beguiling fusion of European and Middle Eastern melodies with other elements from the vast Jewish Diaspora, Israel’s music reflects the multiple influences of its inhabitants. Putumayo World Music presents Israel - a collection highlighting a new generation of Israeli musicians who transcend the political strife depicted on the evening news. From Yemenite chants to Jamaican reggae, this collection represents some of the diverse sounds impacting the popular music of modern Israel. Two percent of Putumayo’s proceeds from the sale of Israel will be donated to Latet – Israeli Humanitarian Aid, in support of its efforts to provide assistance to needy populations in Israel and around the world, and to A New Way, which strives to develop tolerance, friendship and cooperation among Jewish and Arab children and parents in Israel.

Home to an already diverse and sometimes fractious population, with additional settlers arriving every day from Europe, the Americas, and Africa, modern Israel is one of the world's most cosmopolitan, colorful and inclusive musical melting pots. As new arrivals have made their mark, centuries-old Hebrew and Arabic sources have been joined by African, American, and Caribbean grooves, along with cutting edge electronica and quotes from various urban art-song traditions. For example, other than the language, Rona Kenan and Gidi Gov's "Ha'rikud Ha'muzar Shel Ha'lev," with its waltz-like tempo and accordion-laced back-up, would sound completely at home in a Parisian café, as would Tea Packs' "Vehapa'am Shir Ahava," with its graceful vocal curlicues. "Srochim," by revered folksinger David Broza, is redolent of the artist's extended sojourns in Spain and the USA. Meanwhile, Hadas Dagul's "Seret Eelem" reflects his homeland's long-standing love affair with Brazilian bossa nova. Several artists are making an effort to work with and reach out to both established and emerging local communities. Amal Murkus, a Palestinian from Galilee, has incorporated age-old folkways into her mix, and Idan Raichel has established warm collaborative ties with immigrant musicians from Ethiopia, creating a polished, homegrown brand of pop. It's astonishing that such a tiny nation could harbor so many voices. But isn't this exactly as it should be? --Christina Roden
Product Description
The evening news usually depicts Israel as a country dominated by conflict. As a result, most outsiders have little insight into what daily life is really like for its inhabitants. Comprised largely of immigrants, modern Israel is home to diverse groups of people who have come from around the world to settle in this cultural melting pot. Jews, Arabs and Christians live and work together peacefully in Jerusalem, a city whose ancient history and mysticism are held sacred to all three religions.
Nowhere is the diversity of Israel more evident than in its music. A beguiling fusion of European and Middle Eastern melodies with other elements from the vast Jewish Diaspora, Israel's music reflects the multiple influences of its inhabitants. Putumayo Presents Israel is a collection highlighting a new generation of Israeli musicians who transcend the political strife depicted on the evening news. A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of Israel will be donated to Latet - Israeli Humanitarian Aid, in support of their efforts to provide assistance to needy populations in Israel and around the world and to A New Way, which strives to develop tolerance, friendship and cooperation among Jewish and Arab children and parents in Israel.

5.0 out of 5 stars - A Great Compilation, October 23, 2007
By: J. Guberman (USA)
This is a great compilation and is highly recommended. The song by the group Zafa for example whose lyrics are in an Arabic that is a strong challenge to French as the language of love...The songs in Hebrew are equally good and generally strong choices, such as Moshe Ben Ari, Idan Raichel, David Broza, etal. One or two songs, such as Chipopo don't do very much for me, but perhaps I will come back to it later and give it another chance.
It would have been recommended for Putumayo to provide besides the bios of each musician or group in English, French and Spanish to have provided the lyrics to each song in Hebrew, Arabic and the other languages noted as those of us who are conversant in one or more of those languages would certainly appreciate the effort and have the songs appeal on an entirely different level.
5.0 out of 5 stars - The Music of the Holy Land, July 22, 2008
By: Zekeriyah (Chicago, IL)
As the Jewish Country, one might not expect to find much musical diversity in Israel. If thats the case, then you are very wrong. On this compilation from World Music label Putumayo, a wide and eclectic variety of Israeli musicians are collected together, showing the astounding variety of Israeli music today. From the mellow Greek influenced guitar of Hadas Dagul to the exotic Yemeni vibes of Zafa to the sauve, Oriental lounge sounds of musical collective Tea Packs, this showcases an incredibly vibrant musical scene in Israel today. Naturally, the Ethiopian-Israeli crossover Idan Raichel Project makes an appearance here, as does the Hebrew-Qawwali fusion of Sheva (which unites Judaism and Islam together). But the biggest surprise was from the inclusion of Palestinian Arab singer Amal Murukus. As with other Putumayo releases, there is an Israeli recipe for shakshuka, and 1% of sales from the CD is donated to Latet-Israeli Humanitarian Relief charity. If you want to hear a slice of musical life in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, I strongly recommending this CD out for insight into this exotic and diverse Middle Eastern nation.
5.0 out of 5 stars - A Sonic Oasis, November 3, 2007

"Israel" is a first for Putumayo World Music-it's the first Middle Eastern country to have its own compilation. Putumayo also chose a land known for stirring up controversy, considering former Pres. Jimmy Carter's recent book as well as mainline Protestant denominations discussing divestment from it. Fortunately, Putumayo bypasses the politics and goes for the music instead. The selections are wonderfully diverse, and there's even a savory recipe!
"Israel" is distinctive for its acoustic flavor. The opening song,Etta Ankri's "Nilkach Meemeni Sod" is a lilting acoustic reggae song. Itay Pearl&David Broza contribute folksy acoustic guitar songs. Hadas Dagul's "Seret Elem" weaves Israeli folk music with Brazilian bossa nova. Ronan Kenan&Gidi Gov sing a simple duet about flirtation and longing. The Grateful Dead jam bands of Israel, Moshav Band&Sheva, contribute psychedelic,trancey-songs based on the Psalms and Genesis. Zafa blends Yemenite chants with Indian music in her mesmerizing "Tariki." Amal Murkus,a Palestinian Christian, sings the equally hypnotic "Ta'alu." The compilation closes with the Idan Raichel Project's haunting "Out of the Depths."
Putumayo's "Israel" is an enchanting journey to this diverse, fascinating Middle Eastern country. It invites further exploration with soothing, acoustic sounds. This is one of Putumayo's best compilations of 2007! It was released in time for Rosh Hashanah-the Jewish New Year--and worth enjoying year around.
