Italian metal band Timesword is the creation of guitarist Dan Logoluso, who also produces the album. Chains of Sin, their first album, is a creative, often brisk and breathtaking, excursion through progressive metal. Think Secret Sphere merging with Dream Theater. Beyond the epic arrangements, Chains of Sin revolves around Logoluso talented fret work and Alberto Sanzogni's accomplished keyboard contributions. Concerning the latter, the keyboards, against the usual use for accent or atmosphere, are a major participant here having significant, sometimes numerous, solos on every song. I've never been a fan of keyboard based bands or their overpowering presence in a band, but on Chains of Sin they are versatile and creative. The final obvious element is the presence of clear Christian themes in the lyrics, which appear to come from Loguloso's own personal faith.
Otherwise, this work has all the perfect elements of solid progressive metal. Timesword can be sweeping and melodic as on A Thousand Year Kingdom or heavier as on Highway to Paradise. Skyland displays the proficient musical skills of every members. Yet, the grand canvas for Timesword's musical tapestry comes on the near 20 minute epic Real Mistery, where they easily match peers like Dream Theater with grand and bombastic movements. Lovers of the best melodic progressive metal will find Timesword's Chains of Sin a worthy and entertaining contribution to the genre. Very recommended!
