Smoothing the line between dance and lounge music, M People were an instant hit in the UK, bringing quality dancefloor tunes to the masses.
Of course, many of the "real clubbers" were unimpressed, horrified even as a group came along and dared to not only mix dance with traditional pop elements, but furthermore, to get it into the charts inspiring more groups to do the same! undeterred, M People got on with their mission to make us chill-out,dance and feel generally optimistic about life.
_Elegent Slumming_ the group's 2nd album came long enough after Rave died out to not sound as dated as similiar albums of the period. In fact, the spacious mix of this album only sounds very 90's because it was copied so much right through the decade and for good reason.
From the upbeat "One night in heaven" to the R&B influenced tracks like the brilliant "Dont look any further" the album maintains such a cool, uplifting vibe that its easy to get swept up in the sunny atmosphere of Latino flavoured "La Vida Loca" and the rousing ode to independence, "Moving on up", a hit that's lost none of its fiery attitude.
Who needs depth when the music is so stylish and the songs this catchy?
