This highly limited (just 200 copies, folks) new Rothko EP is immediately striking for its unprecedentedly personable presentation. Each copy features a handwritten note inscribed on the recycled card sleeve, addressing the purchaser, signed by the whole band. You get the impression that Rothko are not the sort of band that forgets their niece/nephews' birthdays.
Having done all that, addressing the music itself seems like a formality--Rothko, you had me at "hello." Fortunately, these robust post-rock outings bear all the signatures of a band in their prime, filling each of these four instrumentals with colourful guitars and a jazzy, mightily powerful rhythm section. 'Break the Cycle' illustrates just how masterful Rothko are these days, giving the bass a lyrical leading role, whilst the guitar stirs up a sea of texture, all accompanied by time-keeping tom rolls that eventually lead us into a complex, krautrock-influenced rhythmic backbone. The closing piece takes on a looser, more fractious feel, at times reminiscent of Supersilent for all its otherworldly meanderings.
