Later that year, Django Reinhardt also recorded with Frank "Big Boy" Goudie and Canadian Arthur Briggs. This CD includes another Franco-American collaboration: a fantastic session with trumpeter Bill Coleman and that legendary pianist, Garnet Clark. This third volume of the recordings of Django Reinhardt presented in chronological order, opens with the last two titles by the full Quintet of the Hot Club of France for the Ultraphone label. All three tracks by Garnet Clark's Hot Club Four are oustanding. Clark, a child prodigy from Washington D.C., first recorded with Alex Hill's Big Band in 1934. This is his only session as leader, and his fine playing matches Bill Coleman's magnificent trumpet. A few weeks earlier, Bill had arrived from the United States in order to join the Freddy Taylor band, and these are the first of many oustanding records he was able to make in pre-war France, very often in the company of Django Reinhardt. Wether or not Garnet Clark's playing here was already affected by mental illness is uncertain but soon-after Clark had be confined to an asylum, where he died in 1938 at the age of 24. Apart from a futher date with the Michel Warlop Orchestra, the remaining tracks feature Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelly with the Quintet in several unforgettable recordings. SOLID OLD MAN (Stewart-Taylor-Blgard) 3:02 {Swing 56 (France)} Несколько слов на английском At the height of its popularity, in the summer of 1938 the Quintet of the Hot Club of France was appearing regularly at the "Chez Florence" in Paris. In August, the group set off on a four-month concert tour of Great Britain, which included an appearance at the London Palladium on the same bill as stage-cowboy Tom Mix! Some weeks after returning to Paris for a few engagements, the Quintet again departed on tour, now playing for the first time in Scandinavia. The present CD opens with the remaining sides of a a mid June 1938 session held in Paris. After recording lots of material in London earlier that year, the Quintet returned to the Decca studios in the British capital during their very successful tour. Slim Gaillard's and Slam Stewart's "Flat Foot Floogie", recorded in February 1938, was also a hit in Europe that summer but, as this version proves, remained unconvincing unless played by Slim and Slam. Incredibly, "Lambeth Walk", an even more popular dance-number of the day, swings! It was even recorded by the Duke Ellington Orchestra that same month (see Classics 726). Django took the opportunity to express himself more freely in some duets with Stephane Grappelly at the piano. "Improvisation №2" is another most inspired solo by Django Reinhardt, although without connection to his former "Improvisation" of 1937. An excellent series of recordings by the full Quintet of the HCF, with masterpieces such as Twelfth Year" or "Jeepers Creepers" is followed by the first three sides from one of the most important sessions in pre-war France, at which a Rex Stewart small group cut music that is simply breathtaking. After a long residency at Paris's "Normandie". the band played a week at the "Olympia" in Bordeaux, followed by lucrative and successful engagements at other top Paris venues such as the "Salle Pleyel", the "Alhambra", the 'Folies Belleville" and by no means least, the "Moulin Rouge". This volume of the recordings of Django Reinhardt, presented in chronological order, opens with two great sessions by the Quintet, augmented here by the versatile Alix Combelle. heard playing both tenor-sax and clarinet. Django's magnificent "Nuages" was first recorded ten weeks earlier, but not to the composer's fullest satisfaction. He insisted on recording it again, and this new version became Django's most famous recording ever. The mixture of American standards and traditional material such as "Dark Eyes" gives a good impression of how and what the Quintet played on their nightly engagements. Specialist Freddy Haederli points out to Django's "ghost notes" - inaudible but suggested notes - on "Oiseaux des lies", a procedure later on widely used by jazz guitarists. Christian Wagner's first recordings under his own name feature many top French musicians of the day. Less known, however, is the session by trumpeter Pierre Allier, another to seize the opportunity of calling upon Django's services. "Festival Swing" documents one of the most spectacular moments in the history of French jazz. Clearly influenced by American "All Star Bands", producer Charles Delaunay invited the elite of French musicians for an unforgettable recording date. Many of Django's fans then directed their attention to the many American jazz musicians that were again able to appear in the French capital, gradually ousting seasoned French jazz stars by the late forties. This volume of the recordings of Django Reinhardt presented in chronological order presents two main dates by the quintet featuring the clarinet of Hubert Rostaing. "I'll Never Smile Again" and "Django's Blues" are particularly fine pieces. Shortly after the first of these two sessions, Django Reinhardt left Paris to tour several cities and US Army Clubs in Germany. It was during an engagement in Mannheim, Django composed "Tell Mozart" which he later renamed "Diminushing". Back from this adventurous and arduous tour, the group, this time featuring Maurice and Gerard Leveque on clarinet, recorded scores of tunes for a radio show entitled "Surprise Party" aired on the National French Radio. Although the bulk of this "Souvenirs de Django Reinhardt" material was ultimately to be released on Long Play records, you will find here these that were issued on 78 rpm. Incidentally, these were the very last ones baring the famed "Swing" logotype. Nonetheless, all four tunes are among Django's best sellers... With his extended piece "Gypsy With A Song" Django offers a pun to Ellington's 1938 "Gypsy Without A Song", and any similitary here, is quite intentional (See Classics 717). A week after the closing date of this album, Stephane Grapelly and Django appeared in concert at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, and subsequently were booked for a residency at the ABC Theater.
