___
After spending the 1980s establishing themselves as one of American underground rock's most chaotic, uncompromising, and dangerously psychedelic bands, Butthole Surfers unexpectedly joined the major-label ranks during the post-Nevermind feeding frenzy. Their deal with Capitol Records produced two albums: Independent Worm Saloon, produced by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, and Electriclarryland, which, wildly, driven almost entirely by "Pepper," a hypnotic, deadpan single that sounded unlike anything else on alternative radio, became the band's commercial breakthrough. (The track topped Billboard's Modern Rock chart and helped push Electriclarryland to gold status.) Success, however, quickly soured the band's relationship with Capitol; having signed the Surfers for their unpredictability and underground credibility, the label soon found itself looking for another hit.
Butthole Surfers showed little interest in becoming a more conventional alternative-rock act, and this conflict came to a head with After the Astronaut, the intended follow-up to Electriclarryland. Recorded in 1997 and 1998, the album was completed but ultimately shelved after Capitol reportedly deemed it insufficiently commercial. The band was later dropped and was picked up by the Disney-owned (!) Hollywood Records, which unsurprisingly demanded substantial revisions before agreeing to release the material. Those edits eventually produced the thoroughly unsatisfying Weird Revolution in 2001. By then, five years had passed since "Pepper," alternative rock had moved on, and the band's enthusiasm for major-label life had largely evaporated. Although Weird Revolution yielded a minor hit with "The Shame of Life," it failed to approach the impact of Electriclarryland and ultimately became Butthole Surfers' final studio album.
The original version of After the Astronaut has, until now, remained unheard for decades, acquiring near-mythical status among fans in the meantime. With this official release of the material in its original form and configuration, some of that myth may be punctured. It's important to remember that the Surfers were not at their creative peak in 1997 and 1998; not only were they trying to figure out where, if anywhere, they fit into the era's musical landscape, but they were also exhausted, addled, and constantly arguing with a record label they probably never really wanted to sign with in the first place. That weariness shows in this material, but, unlike the versions that were released on Weird Revolution, After the Astronaut puts that weariness to work. Here, you get a visceral sense of the band attempting to reinvigorate themselves via experimentation with low-budget electronics, big-budget studio trickery, and lots and lots of treated guitars. It's not always successful, but numbers like "I Don't Have A Problem," "Junkie Jenny in Gaytown," and this version of "Jet Fighter" seem much more aligned with the band's ethos than the strained electronica of Weird Revolution did. It's a shame this material wasn't released when it was recorded; while it wouldn't have gone down as one of the band's best albums, it likely would have helped Butthole Surfers continue in some creatively interesting directions. © Jason Ferguson

Слабый релиз, ребята решили срубить шекелей. Мне только 10 и 12 песни понравились. Остальное - в топку.

The 1998 Capitol promo SMOKES this new "remixed" version. There are elements to the new 2026 mix that are fun but overall it's too compressed and has major problems. Junkie Jenny In Gaytown is the biggest disappointment.
