(Free Jazz) Assif Tsahar, Mat Maneri, Jim Black: Jam (2003), APE (image+.cue), lossless

The pairing of reedist Assif Tsahar, violinist Mat Maneri and the mesmerizing drummer Jim Black sounds like a recipe for fireworks and dynamic intensity, at least on paper. All three have a goodly amount of experience with this sort of loosely structured setting, although the trio itself has only played together on a handful of occasions. This limited playing time, as well as each musician's experiences might lead some to wonder whether they are in fact incongruent partners. What is surprising, then, is not only how well these three talents work together, but also how they manage to deliver this set of well-gelled jams. Another unexpected result is that while many of the tracks are crescendo-based movements of tension and eventual release, very few are agitated, burn the house down mélanges. Rather, they favor subdued space and texture explorations that retain a dark, brooding feel overall.
The nine movements of the "suite" initially commence with the band laying the concoction on pretty thick. Before Tsahar's sinewy tenor lines emerge, Maneri and Black crosscut their way around one another, laying down a jagged terrain for Tsahar's jaunts. Very seldom does groovemeister Black have the opportunity to lay down his trademark spry rhythms. Nevertheless, the fifth track explores rhythmic interplay among the members of the trio, with Black throwing in a few terse backbeats and mostly shuffling percussive twists as the others engage in their lively call and response. Ditto track six, although this time Tsahar's bass clarinet is the mechanism for group discovery.
While Tsahar became known as a full throttle explosive force, it seems that as of late, he is more concerned with exploring a measured approach—in particular, one of restraint and control. A good example of Tsahar's power management can be seen on the second track, where his bass clarinet moves murkily through the waters as Maneri and Black stir underneath. Similar tactics appear on the tenor-lead third track with Tsahar's muted, ribbony lines building over the course of the piece. Don't worry, though—the proceedings eventually erupt as the three jockey for position. Also intriguing is the fourth movement's dreary hush that insinuates an ominous tension. Indeed, it is a dark beauty that slips into the fore many times here and at last, leads us out during the final section of this encounter, eventually evolving to its final moments of collective power.
To some, the thought of a jam session might conjure up images of unrestrained, disorganized and possibly even monotonous self-indulgency. Fortunately, none of the aforementioned descriptions need apply here. Rather, JAM is an unexpected delight in its approach—resulting in a boon to fans of these major talents in creative improvised music.
