Дания, принц Гамлет. Призрак отца Гамлета раскрывает ему страшную тайну своей смерти, взывая к мести. Гамлет, хотя и охвачен гневом, медлит с её осуществлением. Принц разочаровывается в друзьях и в любви и впадает в глубокую меланхолию, заставляя окружающих сомневаться в своей вменяемости. Гамлет находит способ изобличить убийцу, и тем самым бросает вызов дяде, и тот, в надежде избавится от племянника, отправляет его с опасной миссией в Англию. Однако вопреки ожиданиям принц возвращается домой…
