Об альбоме (сборнике)(Angl.)
Messing with history can be dangerous. Much as it seems like a straight line, the current rushes backwards and forwards, particularly in music, where the past is always conversing with the present and future. So, with sleeves rolled up and a steely gaze, Poor Man's Whiskey has plunged into the Dark Side, and the repartee they generate is exhilarating. In lesser hands this could be a train wreck but their thoughtful mingling of flavors and focused craftsmanship allows them to spin Pink Floyd's disenchanted bong hit masterpiece atop their fingers Harlem Globetrotter style. PMW get that Dark Side is a crossroads record, a reverberant question mark worth holding aloft at times of great change and uncertainty. Instilling the shadows with honey harmonies, fusion-y fiddle and innumerable other cool touches, they show respect and boldness in their interpretation, giving us new corridors to explore where once we were certain we knew the terrain by heart. One might fear that the socialist cornpone lingering in their name might turn Floyd to Hee-Haw but there's nothing jokey about Poor Man's Whiskey, who're capable of a good laugh but construct jokes that make one think as much as chuckle. This sway of smarts and wit infuses their originals, too, where they delight in jumbling elements in a way that pops like super balls in a cement mixer. String band? Sort of. Rock band? Sure. Prog-metal enthusiasts and swing time fellas? Absolutely. In the end, they are an original distillation, a tasty burn that goes down with a kick and lingers beautifully when it hits your gut.
