Since listening to Helios compositions on a scorching afternoon last year, its been my mission to get Keith Keniff on board for an isolatedmix. A multi-instrumentalist and master of cinematic ambient and soundtrack composition, Keiths releases have spanned electronic ambient albums including Unomia, Eingya and Caesura under his Helios name, as well as writing piano music under the name of Goldmund. For isolatedmix 09, Keith provides us with an insight into the influences behind some of his renowned piano compositions with 45 minutes of perfected soundtracks from, Vangelis, Howard Shore, Ennio Morricone and Michael Nyman.

12. Good Bye Forever Arovane / Timothy Leary samplesAdditional keyboard parts, synths and samples by Nick Warren A tenth anniversary isolated mix, a two year birthday for the blog and a very special guest: Nick Warren. There isnt much I havent already said about Nick within previous posts so I will try to keep this one short. An inspiration ever since first hearing tracks such as Earth and pretty much every other track on the Way Out West self titled album. His Back To Mine mix remains one of my all time favourite compilations (and Im sure many of yours too) and the opening tracks to his GU mixes helped grow my love for Ulrich Schnauss, Boards of Canada and Global Communication, amongst many others.
The inspiration mounted, the blog grew and two years later, there was never any doubt who should get behind this very special birthday and 10th isolatedmix. Luckily, Nick was very happy to oblige: I have long been a fan of the A Strangely Isolated Place website. Any fan of ambient music should make a beeline for it. When Ryan asked me to do a mix for the site I had no hesitation in saying yes and here is the result. Included are some of my favourite pieces of music including A Blues In Drag by The Glove, Robert Smith from The Cure and Steven Severin from Souxsie And The Banshees side project recorded back in 1983 and still sounding incredible. It was a joy putting it together and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it..
1. Tripswitch - Isolatedmix 11 (1:19:14)Tracklist and a few thoughts from Tripswitch: 1.James Holden Kearn My favourite James Holden track an emotional use of his signature reverb and delay tricks. 2.Spectre Overseas Taken from The Missing Two Weeks, an album of sublime and soulful dub from Nick Manasseh. 3,Tankerville Entangled One of those tracks you hear on an advert and then go to the ends of the earth to track down. These days Shazam takes the effort (and the fun) out of the hunt. 4.Deadmau5 I Hate Campers Not known for his chillout, this snippets taken from Project 56, a zip of 56 sketches, stems, chip-tunes and other ideas which he offered up a few years ago as a freebie. 5.Cinematic Orchestra That Home Piano, strings and a good vocal what more do you need? 6.Deadmau5 Wish You Were There Another clip from Project 56. Going through the tracks you realise just what a talented fellow he is. 7.Vangelis Ask The Mountains Theres something about this track theres certainly a whiff of cheese there, but it never fails to put a smile on my face. Vocal is Stina Nordenstam, sublime. 8.Michael Brook and Pieter Nooten Finally I A lesser-known release on the amazing and seminal 4AD label. 4AD was so utterly crucial to my musical development as a teenager truly powerful music to accompany powerful and character-forming experiences. If I ever have a son hell be called Ivo (after Ivo Watts-Russell label guvna and This Mortal Coil founder). 9.Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke The Unfolding Lisa Gerrard of course needs no introduction. A bit obscure this one, but unquestionably epic. 10.Roger Eno Voices Although less prolific or celebrated than his brother Brian, Rogers music can be every bit as beautiful. 11.Kevin Shields Goodbye Taken from the Lost In Translation soundtrack. Tender in comparison to the seminal shoegazing of his My Bloody Valentine years. 12.Amorphous Androgynous Mountain Goat Classic from the 1993 album Tales of Ephedrina. 13.Alex Stealthy Once Ambient The Russians seem to know about bass Im working with some guys from Moscow called Koan who have the same touch with enveloping low frequencies. 14.port-royal hva (failed revolutions) port-royal have really nailed the nu gaze thing For me theyve got the blend just right. Powerful stuff. 15.Tripswitch Stereogram (Solar Fields remix) Magnus has worked wonders remixing track 8 from my new album Geometry. It comes out in a couple of months as a digital single release on Section Records, along with mixes from Adham Shaikh, Luke Chable, Abakus, Aurtas and me check out sectionrecords.com for more details. 16.Ulrich Schnauss Shine (Mint remix) This is a great mix Mints another one with an uncanny knack for nu gaze. 17.Freedom Tygerstar Snow Runner Sun This track featured on Magnetic Blue, one of the earliest Interchill compilations. When I first heard this track it made my hair stand on end. Definitely one of the sparks that ignited my path to chillout production. 18.Twisted Air feat. Caroline Thorp Feels Like Forever Aah, the morning after the night before Its a long time since I did the full party weekend thing, but this track takes me right back to those weekends where sleep didnt seem necessary and my body didnt complain so much. This is an autumnal mix which indulges the melancholy and contemplative mood which closes in around me around this time of year. Some people seem to react quite strongly to the emotional qualities of my music this mix charts a path through some of the key inspirational moments which have shaped that emotion over the years. I hope you enjoy the journey

15. 36 After TimeIsolatedmix 12 is brought to you by Dennis Huddleston aka 36 (or 3Six recordings). With three albums under his belt and several other limited releases, some of you may have already come across his stunning ambient productions on the albums, Hypersona, Hollow or Memories in Widescreen. Theyve been on my iPod for the past few weeks after a bulk purchase and I would recommend them all to any reader of this blog. But, not before youve had a listen to this beauty of course Intense and emotive drones alongside minimal classical moments, Dennis has selected some beautiful pieces for this atmospheric isolatedmix. As you can see from the artists included, its a dig into some ASIP featured producers (Markus Guentner and Irisarri) along with some I havent had the pleasure of, until now. So without further a do, get this on the download, have a read of Dennis track notes below, and then go hibernate in front of some breathtaking scenery with this on your headphones.

21. Mungolian jet set Ocean 0304 (Cruusin with the Henleys mix)When the isolatedmix series first started, my intentions were to include artists who have inspired me from day one, or have recently made a big impact with an amazing record. Magnus, is one of the very few who tick both boxes. His work as Solar Fields leaves me as high as a kite every time. Since his very first album on Ultimae in 2001, to his latest release, #Origin 01, Magnus defines my soundtrack to escapism and his isolatedmix is nothing short of the epitome of beautiful music. Titled 21 Days Of Winter, Magnus has featured some of my favourite artists to date, with N5MDs finest; port-royal, Winterlight, Proem and Bitcrush featuring amongst the classic Manual, M83 and Telefon Tel Aviv, resulting in an absolutely stunning isolatedmix. This is one hell of a start to 2011
1. Joey Fehrenbach - Isolatedmix 14 (52:07)Tracklist and a few words from Joey: 1. Plaid Two Rooms Beatless and beautiful. Chimes and bells are so expressive and have such a beautiful and delicate sound. Havent really heard much from Plaid in awhile, but this track will always be in my top 10. 2. Pitch Black Flex Groovy track with a lot of texture and atmosphere. 3. Le Sherifs Errors A really unique and moody track. Reminds me a bit of Siouxsie and the Banshees. 4. Koan Matariki Koan really sets the bar high for quality music. Not only do they create unbelievably complex and lush arrangements, but also their recordings are so warm and polished. 5. Mark Finnie Remorse Old b-side from 1997. Still holds up. 6. Joey Fehrenbach Ghosts From my latest album. 7. H.U.V.A Network Something Heavens So smooth and groovy with a nice momentum. It just sort of drifts and flows into a epic climax. I think they made the bassline out of butter. 8. 80′s Casual Fiesta Trip hop with a flamenco vibe? Yep. And it works. Yeeuh! 9. Tropics Give It Up This is THE jam. One of my favorite tracks at the moment. Cant wait to hear more from Tropics.Nearly two years ago now, Joey Fehrenbachs Being Around You popped up in my Last.fm library and formed one of the very early posts on ASIP. After his first album, Mellowdrama, we had to wait four years for its successor Dont Wake Me, released just last year. Luckily, the four year break hadnt resulted in a radical change of direction for Joey, just refinement of his superior downtempo. Joeys production sound is heavily reflected in his isolatedmix. An appreciation for chill-out is the spine of Joeys music and indeed this mix, but it can quickly turn into something more upbeat and addictive. Its the kind of music that can be played anytime and enjoyed by anyone. Shorter than most, but sweeter than many, Joeys isolatedmix is a great warm-up set with driving downtempo beats, playful tones and a few unexpected surprises plenty of smiles to be had with this one.

18. Bibio Saint Christopher
19. Kettel Tomorrow Jail (Unreleased)A producer of fine experimental, IDM and electronica, Kettels sound has been instrumental in my years discovering music. Organic, with a massive appreciation of melody and ability to strike the most poignant and interesting electronic soundscapes, Kettels productions sit neatly alongside the likes of Aphex Twins finest productions, yet on a different day have the ability to stand a million miles apart in a world of their own. Gentle pianos in Memory Steps polarise against Aphex Twin sounding tracks such as Dolend and Coddle. Reimer Eising is a producer with years of experience and theres something for everyone amongst his immense electronic back catalogue. Needless to say, Reimers influences are varied and have arisen from all walks of life. isolatedmix 16 is a very special mixtape style journey, all lovingly glued together with added loops, samples and utmost care. Whilst the first half dabbles in genres and tempo, the second half is a deep dive into Reimers more IDM influenced side. The mix contains tracks that are all special to him in one way or another. Close friends Coppe and Phoenicia feature, with his own favourite hip-hop moments from, A Tribe Called Quest, masters in the form of FSOL and the master, Morricone. Special memories invoked from, Mouse on Mars sit alongside meditative arrangements from Miles Davis, and of course a Kettel mix wouldnt be complete without an appearance from Boards of Canadas very own seagull, in Happy Cycling.

18. Pacific UV L.A.P.D vs N.Y.P.D (Eluvium remix)When I was younger I used to go on long coach journeys just to escape. I made up C90 mixtapes and then bought a return ticket for somewhere far away. I would travel through the day and night watching the world pass by me in a blur and listen to my Walkman and disappear somewhere inside myself to a place I wanted to be. It was if there wasnt any real world just a backdrop to the music. Nowadays I make my own music to do the same thing. This mix is an attempt to recreate the feel of those tapes and those journeys.

14. Julien Neto Sketch (Le Fumeur de Ciel)
15. Ulf Lohmann 8 (Because Before)
16. Gas 3 (Pop)This mix was recorded live at the Toskana Therme Bad Schandau. It is a special place with a liquid sound soundsystem, which can play music under water. When mixing ambient music I try very much to create something new and and floating out of the material. Usually it´s four decks in traktor playing at the same time also using loops and some effects. For this mix I tried to assemble the material around the trademark sound of Kompakts Pop Ambient series.

08. Recon Travel Analog (45:15)
09. Mr Cloudy Different Lives (March Snow Dub) (48:06)
10. R&S meet the Chosen Brothers History Version (55:08)Dub techno has always helped me relax and think, which is why I decided to create this mix. Mixing new dub techno with some old favorites, I tried to create a smooth flowing mix to allow all the different shades of dub techno to shine. Ranging from very hazy/dreamy rhythms like Andrea Suglia & Quantec, to more experimental basic channel like tracks such as Recon. Some of the tracks have also been selected from amazing netlabels as well including CISM, Silent Season, as well as Energostatic (all highly recommended labels).

16.Mikkel Metal Decline (Pop Ambient 2006) / Kompakt
17.The Sight Below No Place for us (Eluvium Sedated remix) / Ghostly Int.As you can see, I used a lot of Pop Ambient/Kompakt tracks in this set, but it should not be seen as promo-mix for Kompakt instead, the mix honours ten years of a specific ambient-style and contains many of the great artists who produced and adopted this style. I selected long and wide tracks to create a constant atmosphere, for long mixes without big cuts and breaks.

13. Aerosol-AirborneIve had this idea of compiling some of the artists that has come out of my hometown Odense, Denmark for a while. Recently a short Danish radio feature was made about the music scene in Odense which gave a glimpse of some of the current projects, but it certainly didnt paint a picture of the city as a place with a specific sound. But what has become more and more obvious to me throughout the years is that Odense most certainly has a sound or at least a certain character. Sure, bands break up or change their style and people move away, but somehow theres a set of similarities running through a lot of the music that has come out of Odense anyway which should be obvious when listening to this mix of dreamy rock and electronic music from the last ten years. When I was asked to do a mix for astrangelyisolatedplace, I felt that it was a good opportunity to finally compile some of the fine bands and artists from Odense, and maybe also the right time since its roughly ten years ago me and my friends starting releasing albums. But even with such a stylistically narrow focus (bands and artists that are somehow related to dream-pop, ambient or shoegaze) it was actually impossible to squeeze the rather large amount of projects into a comprehensive overview within an hour-long mix. So unfortunately not all the relevant projects are represented here. Which is kind of ironic. In Denmark, Odense (the third largest city in the country) has a reputation of being a cultural wasteland, a place with miles and miles of residential neighbourhoods but hardly any culture of real interest. Which is true, sort of. On the surface there has only been the occasional famous DJ or rock band coiming out of Odense. Besides that there have been loads of cover bands. And metal bands. Lots of metal bands. But underneath all this there has been produced a wealth of highly ambitious, original and accomplished music in Odense. Its just that it has never been obvious to anyone who wasnt either part of these circuits or deeply interested in alternative music. This stuff hasnt really been super visible at local venues or been present in the Danish press it has mainly been going on in bedrooms, rehearsal spaces and project studios. Apart from a few interested journalists and concert promoters all this great music has been all but completely neglected by the cultural institutions that be mags, radio, festivals, art councils and daily press. At least in Denmark, that is. Because a lot of these artists have done very well outside Denmark, releasing albums on respected labels in the US, Germany, UK, France and Japan, and have gotten amazing press and toured in these countries. Except for one, none of these artists have ever released anything in Denmark. So how come a slow, medium-sized city such as Odense, in a country with hardly any interest in this kind of music, has produced all these quality dreamy records? Good question. Maybe one reason is the lack of interesting things going on. Except for the occasional festival or the occasional cool show at one of the local venues. There have been a long tradition for international bands to skip Odense when playing in Denmark: the cool bands play Copenhagen, then travel straight to Aarhus before going down to Germany. Youre propably more likely to have a good evening drinking cheap beer listening to Seefeel and My Bloody Valentine all night with your friends than going to one of the local techno parties or rock venues. Maybe theres a tendency for people to become slightly introverted and therefore absorb themselves in music and creation. And if youre a young, slightly introvert artist what better sounds to bury yourself in than the dreamy sounds of the 1980s and early 1990s? Well, according to this idea every motionless, medium-sized city in Europe should be producing loads of shoegaze bands, which obviously isnt the case. Maybe its because Denmark is a welfare country and young people tend to have plenty of time on their hands which an amount of them choose to spend playing guitar while starring at the clouds? Im not sure. Maybe the more likely explanation is that a bunch of young, romantically inclined and somewhat intellectual people have been hanging around each other, generating ideas and these ideas have been bouncing around their friend circuits for some time and eventually beyond those circuits, which in the end have resulted in a lot of music that shares certain traits. Coincidentally these people are into Durutti Column, Slowdive and the likes great music that isnt really trendy, that is. Or maybe theres just something in the water in Odense, that naturally makes young people attracted to reverb and melancholia?

16. Underwater Spaces 1:52ASIP & Parks Interview (Igor Bystrov) Can you tell us a bit about where you live? Do your surroundings influence your work at all?
Since childhood, I lived in a resort town called Sochi. It means a lot of hot sun, hot temperatures and a crowd of people. Ive always dreamed of one town and my dream has come true in 1984 I moved to St. Petersburg, the best city on Earth. This conveys the nature of my feelings and sensations. I love the fog and the low gray sky. All my music is sustained in these colours. You started producing in the late 1980′s, has your approach to production changed at all? What do you differently now to then?
Nothing really except for the fact that in the late 90′s I had a computer. The only thing that has changed is machinery and equipment. I like the cassette tape and I still use them. A small fact I wrote the first two albums in 1990-91 and they were on a portable cassette with several friends for 10 years. In early 2000 the label Fono proposed to publish the albums I agreed Who were your biggest influences back then?
Back then I was very fond of of Arvo Part, Henryk Gorecki Symp. 3 (2), Harold Budd / Brian Eno The Pearl and other works of Eno. Even Robert Fripp, Robert Wyatt and Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares. And who are your biggest influences now?
Now Im under the impression from Zelienople, Akira Rabelais Spellewauerynsherde, Gas, Gavin Bryars The Sinking of the Titanic, David Sylvian -Blemish, Flunk, NASA Voyager Recordings etc How did your relationship with Infraction come about and what can we expect in the future?
Brian Grainger (Milieu) is a good friend of mine and he took my records and gave them to Jason Bryant, owner of Infraction Records and it started from there. The future? I can not say anything it is the future! Where is your Strangely Isolated Place?
Interesting question. In fact, Strangely Isolated Place is my home, it is as the submarine, I look through the windows to the outside world, I communicate via phone and chat. But most of all I love to listen to music on my iPod Classic and a walk in the park, but this doesnt happen very often. Your music is quite varied, with aspects of ambient, electronica, downtempo and chill. Do you prefer one over the other?
I find it difficult to pin a style to my music, but i can tell you what it isnt Chill-out or New Age. My music does not contain any rest or peace (with rare exceptions), and is not intended for easy listening with a cup of coffee at the bar. Theres a few vocal samples in your tracks too, are they samples or were they produced specifically for the tracks?
No theyre not samples and they werent designed specifically for Parks either. My friend is a vocalist for a rock band and his American girlfriend used to sing to him on a dictaphone to teach him the correct pronunciation. I took possession of these records and used them within tracks. They were however, heavily edited and changed. Can you describe the process behind the tracks you selected for this mix?
Before I start a mix, there is always a special feeling and I start looking for a sound that will match. Ill take any sound that comes across strongly and change its ways to fit. What may start out as rubbish at the beginning can often turn into diamonds. I use Cubase 5, Logic, Kontakt, Kurzweil K2000, Korg ESX-1, and some additional things that make a poor quality sound. The results are recorded on an old tape, then digitized and a cleared out. Seeing as your isolatedmix is made-up of your own tracks, can you name two or three tracks you would have chosen if you were putting together a mix of other artists?
I think it will be Jacaszek V, Lahto The Night Was Green and NASA Voyager Recordings 2 Sphere Of IO

24. TV On The Radio Staring At The SunUs CBL fans have been pretty lucky recently; two albums in successive years, with Interloper in 2010 and Twentythree in 2011. But, it hasnt always been so. With albums sometimes three years apart, this extended anticipation has left many-a CBL fan suffering for years on end. For many, thats what makes their productions so special and for me, this mix even more so. Not only are Daniel and Johannes cult heroes heralded by many ambient fans from across the world, but stumbling across any of their releases, or indeed insight into their workings is as rare as the sunshine on a Swedish winters day. Everything that floats out of their studio is quality and has been since their very first release on the ground-breaking Ultimae Records back in 2003. How do you keep such a fan base in tune over such an extended period? (Damn it, I didnt even ask that question below). Well, from my point of view you set the standard for stunning ambient music, you keep raising it with each release and you make sure that every album you produce has the ability to envelope you in warm synthesizers and transport you to that welcoming but strangely isolated place. Daniel and Johannes have it nailed.

15. Télépopmusik Smile (Applescals Tribute Mix) Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the mix?
I found the inspiration on Soundcloud. There are so many talented and unknown artists out there making really good music. Its amazing. I love to discover new tunes there and thats what inspired me to make this mix. Did you have to leave any favourite tracks out?
Yes, a lot Tracks by Essay, Chrome Sparks, Tree!, Julien Mier, Aether, Jacob 2-2 and many more. The sound in the mix is a bit of a change from your productions when and where do you listen to this type of music?
At home when im checking my e-mails or when im in the studio. I prefer to listen it when im alone. Have you considered making more downtempo style music?
Not really. I make what i like.. I never know what the result is when i start a new project. Just following my thoughts and feelings and that ends up as a song. The mix contains an exclusive new Télépopmusik remix from you, can you tell us how this remix came about?
Well, I was working on the mix and I thought it might be cool to mix new music up with some old music. I was listening to Télépopmusiks smile and thought, wow, this track is really cool to edit for the mix. So, before I realised, I worked on a bootleg remix and finished the track in two days. And the inspiration behind the mix title?
I think the north is really nice. Beautiful nature and nice people. I was going on vacation to Sweden as well when the mix was done, but nothing really special. What can we expect from Applescal in the future?
Im working on a lot of new music and planning to share most of it on my Soundcloud. Im working on a new album which hope to finish this year! Pretty exciting. Télépopmusik - Smile (Applescal's Tribute Mix)

Grouper Down To The Ocean (Cover The Windows And The Walls) A pleasantly mirky siren song. 08. Chihei Hatakeyama Starlight Reflecting On The Surface Of The River (Minima Moralia) Shimmering and evocative. 09. Wes Willenbring While My Lungs Fill With Water (Somewhere Someone Else) There is a frightful but liberating feeling in letting go. 10. Clouwbeck The Waters Burden (From Which The River Rises) You can feel the undulating weight of the waters mass a gentle but powerful current. 11. Brian Eno & Harold Budd A Stream With Bright Fish (The Pearl) Its a world we can see into but cannot live inside. We are spectators. 12. Gavin Bryars Titanic Hymn (Autumn) All Strings (The Sinking Of The Titanic) A slow descent. One of the most haunting impressions of the sinking Titanic.Whether conscious or not, water has long been an influential factor in my work. There is something intangible, powerful, emotional, alluring and frightening about water. With this mix, I thought I would explore if and how water has influenced other artists who I respect and admire. A quick peruse of my music collection lead to the discovery of quite a few pieces that are somehow connected to water. Be it rivers, streams, oceans or rainfall, it seems water is often an inspirational subject for many composers and this doesnt surprise me. I remember a conversation I had in university with a friend who was studying oceanography and fluid dynamics. I had recently learned about the use of Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) in audio analysis. My layman understanding of this was that FFTs allow for efficient analysis and resynthesis of audio data so that computers can better handle the vast amounts of sample data typically needed to represent and process digital audio. Long story short, my friend (who had a much better understanding of the application of FFTs than I) revealed to me that they use the same process and similar math for analyzing tidal data. What struck me about this was that if you look closely at things like sound waves or tidal patterns, etc., there are universal similarities that almost everything can be boiled down to vibrations, oscillations, frequencies, etc. Of course, there is much more to our relationship with water than just that. We depend on it for life as does all life on this planet. We also play in it, float on it and sometimes it destroys our homes or we drown in it. Growing up on the west coast, many of my memories both fond and otherwise, somehow involve water, whether it be in the foreground or simply in the background. It seems Im not alone.

42. The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band Yellow SubmarineIts been an extended period since the last isolatedmix from Loscil, mainly because ive been focused on getting the Places Series off to go a good start. But also, as with all isolatedmixes, they dont come around too often and I make a conscious effort to reserve the series for producers, DJs or artists that have a profound influence on me, be it recently or many moons ago. Rich-Ears, with his many mixes, tribute sets and mind-bending journeys (half of which have featured on ASIP over the years), definitely falls into this category. His curations are reminders of just how expansive ambient, chill and electronica can be. They are packed full of crate-diggers gems and nostalgic samples. There isnt a set that goes by without new music to my ears, classics re-emerging or favourites re-imagined. And like all good journeys, its better experienced with a good friend. Rich-Ears parallel mind from across the ocean, DF Tram, joins him on this one, to rekindle a very special partnership which was evidently brilliant through their last masterpiece, Lunar Fizz. This mix, titled Earth Apogee, is another dive into a vivid spectrum of ambient, chill, downtempo and samples that co-exist between two die-hard music fans. Their collections are expansive, their taste immaculate and this mix is a testament to their extensive music libraries and skills in curating a all-immersing musical journey.

Isolatedmix 29 Textural Being (2012) (1:04:22) (320 kbps, BR)
1. Textural Being - Isolatedmix 29 (1:04:22)Tracklist/tracknotes: 01.Vangelis Dawn The perfect musical depiction of the outskirts of a large city, early, sleepy, and cold Dark greys and oranges permeate this atmosphere. 02.Scanner Vie One Your transition out of the city. A red drone. 03.Federsen Octavian Totally mesmerizing atmosphere, flashings of different images and shimmers of purple. 04.Stars of the Lid A Meaningful Moment Through A Meaning[Less] Process A track thats lighter than air Huge floating cathedrals, white and cream-coloured, built in the sky. 05.Ten And Tracer Next Sun This lovely little piece stays in the sky, evoking further images of clouds and blue. 06.Pub Summer [Arovane AMX 1] One of my all time favourite pieces of electronic music Uwe Zahn, a true paragon, especially when remixing. Luscious green pastures and yellow/orange sparkles here. 07.Chris Clark Oaklands The image dissolves, awash in a swirl of hazy grey and blue smoke. 08.Yagya Snowflake 9 And we find ourselves moving through snowy fields, white and grey abound. The warmth in this track is astonishing for such a cold theme But I think snow is remarkably beautiful, so I suppose it works out. 09.Quantec Triptychon Ver. I The dreamy quality of this track is pretty amazing. Sometimes I notice its on halfway through and cant remember it ever starting Black and pale blue smears with sporadic flashes of light come to mind. 10.Kiln Stare A drone of such shine and character you almost cant help feeling warm inside when it plays. More orange and yellow here. 11.Strategy Stops Spinning Strategy has somehow projected a profound feeling of stillness in this song, despite all the movement it contains A truly wonderful feat, and its alive with all sorts of multi-coloured sparks, fluttering and ricocheting around the crystalline forms of environments and people, frozen in their activities. Beautiful. 12.Chris Clark The Sun Too Slow This bizarre atmosphere, courtesy Chris Clark, staggers along with its own strange beauty, shooting rays of pale light in all directions. 13.Ametsub Repeatedly Soft shiny silvers and blues float through this emotionally intense track Like so many piano keys dissolving in the wind. 14.Boards of Canada In the Annexe Short, repetitive, and somehow able to communicate so much Like much of the music of Boards of Canada, this tiny emotional flicker seems to hint at fluttering, caustic shades of teal, blue, green and turquoise. 15.Taho The River Of Grace Like the opening track I chose, this song is one of the most perfect closing pieces Ive ever heard. Sublime in its simple beauty, I am honestly given vivid images of a flowing river when I listen to this track, all washed out like an oversaturated photograph from decades ago And so melodic. Perfect.I chose the tracks in this mix for their ability to conjure up such strong imagery and colour in my head when I listen to them, that if I recall the images later, I can hear other music playing along to them in my minds ear. These sounds sometimes (though not always) go on to become tunes of my own, once Ive spent enough time transforming them from thought to sound wave. Its not a perfect description of the process, but its the easiest way I can think of to describe how the songs I picked for this mix affect me, on a personal level. Then theres the emotional level, which had a big part in how I decided what songs to pick as well The emotional side of music is very important to me, which I hope is evident by the selections Ive made! This was -not- by any means an easy list to narrow down. There are so many amazing sounds out there by so many different talented musicians everywhere, that fitting a coherent communication into a single hour can be a daunting task But, it was a challenge I was more than happy to undertake. So, Im communicating to everyone music thats very close to me, and what I do; music thats helped move me along in my evolution as a sound aritst. Hopefully Ive managed to provide a good picture of that.

Robertos music is varied, progressive and always emotive, and as he goes on to describe below, this mix captures the essence of his production approach with some of his biggest inspirations. Its a tracklist which can easily be glanced over to the untrained musical eye, but one that comes to life upon reflection. Manual features twice, as does the more recent Bristolian pioneer Stumbleine, Ambient, electronica, shoegaze-hints of new and old, as well as an exclusive remix, this ones got it all.

16. Oneohtrix Point Never Sleep DealerHis isolatedmix does just that too. In classic ASIP style, Akihito combines many of the musical elements we love, from ambient, to IDM and straight-up electronica. An ametsub track was included in both isolatedmix 28 and 29, so its only fitting that Akihito goes full circle and includes some previous contributors including Crisopa and Rhian Sheehan. Progressively planned, well-mixed and interesting enough to leave you guessing after every track, Ametsub has just raised the isolatedmix bar that little bit higher.

Yagya and a few others make up the 3% of newer trance that is well done 6. Cuppcave Circuit Fade
I found this song to be that missing link to what I wish I made, the lo-fi silence with a pulse slowly swelling in and out, I truly wonder if it didnt end I wonder how long id let it play for? 1 day? 1 week? who knows. 7. Pub Derail
Pub is up there with Wolfgang Voigt, Erik Kowalski and Scott Morgan as my main reason I love to make music, when I first heard Derail I was soo floored by the control of how steady he kept this song, how he never used extremes but the whole song sounds like your standing in 100ft+ tall wind tunnel. 8. Scott has a way of making it okay to drop everything youre doing and calm down, im sure if you were at work and your boss saw you stop working and then heard what you were listening to hed understand and let the song finish, always powerful, heavy and genuine. 12. Heathered Pearls Raising Our Ashes
The song title always felt a bit morbid after seeing it written down but has grown on me since thats the visual I get when I hear it again. This track was written when I wanted to imagine a song to play out that the whole venue could slowly leave the ground and it would be the last youd ever hear because youd just have tinnitus for the rest of your life. 13. Solar Year Currents
These guys are my latest favorites, such a pleasure to hear vocals slowly swirling, I hope to work with them in the near future. 14. Boards Of Canada Unknown

20. The Tear Garden Lonesome Tonight (Sub-Conscious Communications 2009)Over the past 30 years or so Ive had a deep love for electronic music. Ill never forget when I was introduced to the music of Kraftwerk and Jean-Michel Jarre for the first time as a 7-year-old, and I was swept away. The sounds and the music opened up a new level of reality for me, transported me to a universe of enchanted worlds made of sounds. Over the decades, as the music changed and developed into various styles and genres, my personal preferences also changed with time. Always guided by a search for that sense of deep mystery and other-worldliness that the sounds inspired. Certain artists and musicians came to my attention, and their music became a big part of my life and identity. Music that has stuck with me ever since their vibrational patterns first hit my ears and fused with my mind and excited my chakras, resulting in a blissful state of awe and wonder, goosebumps often included. These tracks all have something that can only be described as magic. This mix is made up of a mere handful of tracks like this. Music that hits that special nerve. Soaking in mystery. Taking the listener for a ride through a few of my favorite magical moments in electronic music history from 1980 up until 2012. Enjoy! Anders Ilar

Kajis delivered a beautiful orchestral track for this mix and Turismos remix of Architects Dream has exactly this oldskool vibe I love

17. Bochum Welt 8221SBOriginal and rhythmical electronic music shaped so accurately and sensitively that I immediately reach a pure listening satisfaction every time I hear these gems. I was a bit sentimental while crafting this selection as these sounds, in some ways influenced my life and cultural activities. Most of these pieces were discovered in the early 00′s when I just started exploring the diversity of music catalogs. Although this mix doesnt clearly reflect my musical knowledge these days, it definitely shows my emotional and mental state Im experiencing every day, especially at night. I have a lovely girlfriend, a couple of close friends and even though everything seems to be perfect in my life, this mix uncovers another side of my personality. When Im dreaming, hoping for a better tomorrow, staring at the night sky or just asking a lot of philosophical questions to myself, these sounds do not overwhelm these processes, but help to keep the inner-peace and strengthen the senses. Subtle glitchy beat patterns, repetitive percussions, nostalgic deformed melodies and varied cut samples are the main priority that weave and develop the main ideology. Also, I thought theres not so many of these types of selections nowadays, and as it was 5-10 years ago , I wanted to remind myself what beautiful and light melancholic music we had back in the day. I dedicate this mix to the mind architects, harmony seekers and diehard music lovers. Let the rhythms gently dance, the bass smoothly flow and the melodies sparklingly wave. Justinas Mikulskis

Stereogamia is a reflection of my current state, thats how I feel now. You can plunge into my world for a hour and look at it through my eyes in some way. I dont know anything that would have a stronger impact on me than the music. It is my guide. Its the first time im not using my alias Fill for this kind of sound. It can be said that this division is disappearing now. The first track by Accelra is similar to birth and growing up. Something perfect, a beautiful face with the cruel reality of trying to keep to your original self. I see something familiar to me in this, so I can feel it deeply.
Second track called For borders with a question: For what?. At the end of the track we seemingly near the answer but the conclusion takes us back to the beginning leaving the listener wondering exactly that.
The third track by Jacaszek portrays loneliness through its piano and chords. In addition rustling, crackling, vocal and strings stir the memories.
For me Eos is about the fact that everything is cyclical and everything has its end. I love that low voice in the track. Someone says that I have one too.
Hunted Twice by Deaf Center reminds me of a chase or a hunting scene. I like how the very stressful and dangerous atmosphere at the beginning changes to a soft and warm sound. It feels like the light on the horizon.
Hover is a very strong track. I love this song, particularly the evolution in the middle. Sounds like something well hidden trying to break out. Perfect arrangement and effects.
The seventh track by Allez Allez is the longest track in the mix. I think theres an epic progression here. For me, this is not the kind of track that you should unwind in the middle. The transitions helps you float away.
Metallic Monks, is great. Its the soundtrack of the game of my childhood Fallout. The first time I saw this game I was like What a load of crap. But shortly I realised it was the greatest game I had ever played and it definitely changed me. There was a huge, complex, exciting and truly post-apocalyptic world. Mark Morgan was responsible for some genius soundtracks.
Mistake is from my Syktyvkar friend Volor Flex. I think this is one of his unreleased tracks that he sent to me. You should listen to his first album called Tramp.
Gravity Jump, another soundtrack from Limbo. Its a very deep and beautiful game. Yeah, I really love atmospheric games with great sound design
Alpha is the atmosphere of inner tension, erupting through melody and sharp fragments of sounds, which refutes the illusion of serenity. The high and distorted guitar in this track is the peak of emotions.
The last one is by my Slovakian friend Keosz. I hear the striking lyricism, tragedy and beauty at the same time in this track. Is this the end of it all? Of the mix maybe

11. To Rococo Rot Die Dinge Das LebensIntroduction (by Jason Kolb from Billow Observatory): Im almost psychotically seasonal with my listening habits. There are songs/records that I strongly associate with certain times of year, almost down to the month and time of day. The first time I listen to a record or hear a new song is typically the time of year I always end up associating with that record. I have a very hard time listening to things out of season and this feeling is strongest in summer. To me, summer songs hit the hardest because I tend to associate a lot of them with the euphoria of long, lazy warm days spent outdoors, the nostalgia of childhood summer vacations, and generally trying to maximize what always feels like the shortest time of the year. The tracks I picked for this mix are those which instantly transport me back to summers past.
-JasonTrack notes: 1. Lovesliescrushing Halo
A good friend of mine came home from the record store one summer day in 94 or 95 with a copy of bloweyelashwish and said something really mundane like, this is supposedly some cool guitar stuff made by some local guy, which was a funny understatement. Lovesliescrushing was a really interesting product of mid-Michigan in the 90s formed by Scott Cortez. Dense, lush, and formless without being thoughtless, this record came into my life just as I thought droning, blissful guitar sounds were dying out. -Jason 2. Slowdive Moussaka Chaos
Souvlaki came out as an import in the US in late Spring of 93. As a teenager who had recently just gotten a license to drive and was about to be on summer break from school, this record was truly a soundtrack for those hazy days of a teenage summer. Souvlaki Space Station was the track that really hit me initially. For this mix, I included the alternate version from the Outside Your Room EP. -Jason 3. Landing Migration
Landing is an incredible band from Connectitut that has always seemed to remain in obscurity despite releasing one fantastic album after another. Their music has a kind of rural American atmosphere that I love (which actually can be said about a number of artists on this mix) even though most of their influences, such as krautrock and shoegaze, are of European origin. Their music spans a wide range of genres but theres a unique sense of drift that runs through all of their work. This blissful track is from their latest, self-titled album, released last summer. -Jonas 4. Waterwheel Jejune
Waterwheel is a splinter project off of the Kiln/Fibreforms tree. The Panchroma LP came out in 97 and was hugely influential on me. There were a lot of interesting people doing interesting things locally (mid-Michigan) at the time, but this (along with Kilns Holo LP) just seemed to come from another planet altogether. This particular track always reminds me of walking around my practically deserted home town in the summer, seemingly having the whole place to myself. -Jason 5. Auburn Lull Gunpowderbluedragon (Kiln rebuild of Arc of an Outsider)
It feels a little awkward to include a track from the other project Im in (Auburn Lull), but this is a very unique and special cut that I particularly enjoy at dusk during peak summer, around mid-July. We asked Kiln to remix tracks from our last record and ended up with two absolutely stunning rebuilds, of which this was the first. It would be unfair to call this merely a remix because they completely overhauled the original track and re-shaped it into something entirely fresh and new. I prefer this to the original version and wish everything could turn out this way.
-Jason 6. Fennesz A Year in a Minute
I was very late to the Endless Summer party and I dont really know why. It took years after the release before I finally heard it. Its really hard to find something original to say about a record so hyped and highly lauded. The funniest thing is that I bought the record because it had the word summer in the title. The first time I listened to it was on an oppressively hot day one of those days where you almost cant move. I just sat there and listened intently, wondering why this record came into my life so long after its release. -Jason 7. JD Emmanuel Part V, At-One-Ment
JD Emmanuel is a pretty obscure artist from Texas who has been doing hypnotic synthesizer music since the late 1970s. This track is from his 1982 album Wizards, which is a perfect crystalization of his vision. This stuff is really timeless and holds up well today. You can hear the minimalists (expecially Terry Riley) in this stuff, which gives the music a distinctive American flavour that sets it apart from most of the synthesizer music of the period. -Jonas 8. Tape Root Tattoo
Tape is an extremely underrated trio from Sweden. I discovered them by accident nine years ago when I was invited to play at a small summer festival way out in the Swedish countryside. One night after hanging out at a bonfire with some of the other artists (and a local didgeridoo player) drinking cheap wine and chatting, I decided to go back inside an check out whoever was playing and I walked into Tapes set. It was completely mesmerizing, and looking back on it this was probably the perfect place and circumstance to see these guys. They really capture the unique serenity of open skies, trees, wildlife and summertime in Scandinavia. Every summer I listen to Tapes albums. -Jonas 9. Boards of Canada Ataronchronon
The Campfire Headphase propably is my favourite Boards of Canada album. It has a laid-back, breezy and otherworldly vibe to it. This little piece is truly gorgeous. -Jonas 10. Verve Beautiful Mind
This is (The)Verve at their creative peak, right before going horribly downhill in my opinion. Everything they put out up to and including A Storm in Heaven was incredible and influenced me profoundly. Picking one song was really tough, but Ive probably listened to this track more than any. Incidentally, this record came out only a month or so after Souvlaki in the summer of 93. -Jason 11. To Rococo Rot Die Dinge des Lebens
To Rococo Rots The Amateur View is one of my alltime favourite electronic releases. I bought this album in June 1999, a few months after it was released and it still has vibes from that summer all over it. Its one of those albums I keep coming back to, every June, year after year. And this piece is just perfect. And its based on a sample from a Gigi Mason track from the 1980s by the way. -Jonas
