Ирландцы - многострадальный народ, им хреново жилось что в ирландии, что за её пределами. Но за пределами видимо было чуть менее хреново, поэтому теперь большая часть считающих себя ирландцами людей живёт отнюдь не на зелёном острове. Впрочем, даже эмиграция не мешает сохранять и развивать культуру народа: если человек хочет играть на гармошке - он будет на ней играть.

Whelan is the seven (yes, unbelievably seven) time All-Ireland button box champion. Long known on the festival circuit for his flamboyant showmanship, don’t be deceived. We once saw a performance of John’s at the Dublin, Ohio Irish Festival where he was literally dancing on a tabletop while playing with his band. It hit us then, and still does, that with all the craic going on, the performance was still perfect. Make no mistake, this guy is a master musician. He does not receive anything approaching the publicity that certain other trad acts do, yet it is an undisputable fact that he is one of the best selling traditional Irish musicians of all time. Нет, правда, нужно быть действительно великолепным музыкантом, чтобы можно было давать альбомам названия вроде "celtic crossroads", и при этом их всё равно воспринимали всерьёз. Хотя, конечно, это далеко не "суровая" традиционная музыка: аранжировки вполне понятны неискушенному слушателю, и монотонные рилы не вязнут на зубах даже у стороннего человека. И это хорошо.
Кстати, не все альбомы сольные: на большей части дисков ему помогает целая гоп-компания из отменных музыкантов с инструментами вроде скрипки, ирландской волынки (uilleann pipes) или флейты.
