Когда-то Parenthetical Girls именовались The Swastika Girls в честь песни Брайана Ино, а в их составе числился одаренный бородач Оуэн Эшворт, который пожертвовал группой ради своей страсти к детским синтезаторам. Два первых альбома чуть было не приклеили к коллективу бирку «двойников Xiu Xiu» — так зашкаливало количество душевных терзаний на минуту звучания. «Entanglements» привел Parenthetical Girls на почву куда более благородную: сейчас портлендский квартет делает воздушный оркестровый поп, взрослый и скорее созерцательный, нежели откровенный. Вокалист Зак Пеннингтон выпевает фальцетом как будто случайные мелодии; так же непредсказуемо ведут себя инструменты — поскрипывает кларнет, невзначай бьют колокольцы, некстати бренчит арфа. Любопытно, что за полчаса альбомного времени гитарный звук появляется лишь единожды — и найти его невозможно. Понятно, что «Entanglements» отнюдь не новое слово в музыке; контрастные фрик-рапсодии до Parenthetical Girls писали и популяризатор барокко-попа Эндрю Бёрд, и еще одно дитя лейбла Tomlab канадский скрипач Final Fantasy. Однако именно в этой несмелой, хаотичной подаче есть своя прелесть — какой-то свет, если угодно.
