Sound Quality: ★★★★
Repertoire Value: ★★★★★
Booklet: ★★★★ Born in 1935 in Halberstedt / Silesia Georg Katzer is one of the most important composers of our time. Katz studied with Rudolf Wagner-Regency, Ruth Zechlin and was a master student of Hanns Eisler, and Leo Spies at the Berlin Academy of Arts. To date, Georg Katzer created a diverse oeuvre with more than 150 compositions. These include ballets, electronic music, chamber music, orchestral works and musical theater. In the catalog, there are also string quartets. The NEOS is now a recording with the String Quartet Nos. 1, 3 and 4 released (hybrid SACD, playable on regular CD players), founded in 2006 interpreted by the sonar Quartet. The second string is missing, it was so far not been identified or otherwise released, was at times even missing. Maybe one day it will be submitted even though elements of the second string quartet are now incorporated into the fourth. Distinctive
The presently recorded three quartets were in a period of nearly forty years, the first in 1965, the third followed in 1987 and the fourth was already this century. Despite the large time frame and the related compositional trends Georg Katzer is his own unique expression in all string quartets. Was the first string quartet or the composition, with the cat, according Booklet his compositional breakthrough 'experienced, so from today's perspective, the String Quartets Nos. 3 and 4 interesting with its expanded range of musical means and ways of playing, however, the first no less worth hearing . Atmospheric
With the sonar quartet Georg Katzer has found a congenial interpreter of his string quartets. The quartet, which since its founding to contemporary music, especially the 21 Century concentrated, the string quartets Katzer has worked very closely, every single sound is differentiated, has its own expression, is nevertheless embedded in a convincing overall horizontal and vertical structure. The game of sonar Quartet is atmospheric, dramatic, musical structure of the quartets almost plastic. Dramatic and explosive density seem quartets, played music extensively to breathe. This recording is a complete success and should be in every collection of contemporary chamber music.--Patrick Beck, 22.01.2011, klassik.com
