'A View From The Front' by Steve A. Jones.
I arrived at the Shepherds Bush Empire the chilly afternoon of March 25, 1998 with one thought in mind: could the evolution of Jimmy Page & Robert Plant really continue?
It had been nearly three years since they delivered their last concert-length performance in England, and that was on a memorable hot summer's night at Wembley Arena. Former Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant watched from the mixing desk area, and I was taking in the live action from a spot nearby. How proud Peter must have felt when Robert acknowledged his presence from the stage. Sadly he passed away that Autumn and time (the wheels) rolled on.
The Shepherds Bush Empire show had sold out in the blink of eye and that was promising. Jimmy and Robert had given an upbeat interview on Greater London Radio the day before and they had two television appearances booked, one for Thursday at the BBC Studios, London, for their first ever appearance on the long running Top Of The Pops TV programme (for which the CCS version of 'Whole Lotta Love' had been its signature theme tune for many a year). The other television booking was for the TFI Friday programme with host Chris Evans, broadcast from the Riverside Studios, London, on TFI Friday with host Chris Evans.
On Wednesday afternoon the trucks were duly offloaded at Shepherds Bush Empire and everything was put in place for that nights' show. By 5:30pm a queue of fans had formed at the box office, their excited breathing creating a mist in the air. Some had come from just down the road, others from much further afield, everyone hopeful that additional tickets for the sold out show would be made available.
The ticket touts were out in force on the streets of Shepherds Bush and the going rate for a 22.50 GBP ticket escalated from 60 quid to 125 quid as the opening of the doors drew near. I'll never forget the beautiful Japanese girl who approached a tout with hope in her heart, shattered to hear a ticket would cost 200 quid. She turned away like so many others and vanished forlorn and ticketless into the night.
A black London taxi pulled up alongside the curb and out stepped none other than bassist Charlie Jones, who walked briskly into the venue. This added to the excitement in the air, fast becoming as thick as the fog you read about in one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels.
A half dozen or so cardboard promo posters for the April 20th release of their new album 'Walking Into Clarksdale' were slipped inside the railings of the pavement barricades, and were promptly stolen with minutes. I took this as my cue to get inside the venue. I was told later the box office ultimately did release a limited amount of tickets to the faithful at face value.
The Egyptian intro pierced the din, and a shimmering hue of green and gold once again filled the air. The crowd roared their approval as the band ripped thru Led Zeppelin classics The Wanton Song, Bring It On Home, and Heartbreaker. Robert's opening remark - "Good Evening everybody, the old devils are back (pause) so I read" - is a direct reference to the headline of the April 1998 issue of Uncut magazine, which unveiled, on the front cover, the 1998 'no frills' look of Robert and Jimmy.
The opening set confirmed this was going to be a 'take no prisoners' club type of gig. Ramble On was followed by Robert asking the audience "So what do you do after all that?" The answer was the first public performance in England since Knebworth '79 of a new Page/Plant song - Walking Into Clarksdale. Robert sang of the killing floor, twelve white horses, burned out motels and Mississippi, then Jimmy delivered a devastating solo. The crowd roared it's approval. The night was young, but already, Jimmy and Robert had proven their evolution was continuing.
A familiar arrangement of No Quarter was performed - during which the security staff gestured to a girl seated on her man's shoulders to get down. A spot-on version of No Quarter was followed by the second new song of the night, When I Was A Child. Bathed in purple light, Robert, once again, became a story teller, as he whistfully sang lyrics alluding to dreams, youth, innocence, and strength. Yes, the evening's undertone of rebirth became more prominent.
Going to California, Tangerine and Gallows Pole satiated those who yearned for their acoustic material, but it was then back to an all new, up-tempo rocker, Burning Up. Jimmy was hopping and bopping during this track, while Michael Lee served up a succession of cymbal crashes.
The poignant Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, casually introduced as: "Here's a folk song", was absolutely sublime, and How Many More Times, with a bit of In The Light, brought the house down as the evening progressed. It was whilst photographing Jimmy with the bow that the thought occurred to me that I was witnessing one hell of a gig!
A fourth new song, Most High, described by Robert as a song linking their past to the present, turned out to be a surprisingly interesting blend of Anglo/Arabic music, but still retaining Page's guitar-riff trademark. This was followed by a ferocious Whole Lotta Love, to close the show.
They returned to rapturous applause for an encore. Robert took a swig of water, and then introduced a fifth new song, House of Love. It seemed an odd choice for the encore; I don't think it was ever performed again in a live concert setting. It was soon forgotten, though, as they delivered a blistering rendition of the blues classic, Crossroads. This for me was the highlight of the night. Robert then bid everyone a goodnight, and they exited stage right to cries for more from an audience who, at that moment, were having the live concert experience of their lives.
What a delightful surprise for everyone to have them return for a second encore. Thank You sounded heartfelt indeed, particularly when Robert humbly exclaimed after it ended
"Silly old buggers singing songs about love".
At this point, the crowd were certainly not ready to let them go, and it's fair to say Robert sensed this before engaging in a 'call and response' tease with the audience: "say what?", "Rock and Roll" comes the refrain, and they launched into it, complete with Jimmy and Robert striking familiar on-stage poses of the 70s. It was a very visceral reminder of Led Zeppelin's glory days.
When it was over the Empire shook with wild applause, band beaming as they took final bows. I recall turning to see a main floor and balcony brimming with jubilation. The culmination of a magical, never to be forgotten night in my life.
It was an epic gig and, while no recording can ever capture exactly what it was like to be there, this dual camera stereo soundboard DVD produced by Blockbuster is as close as it gets.
