AMERICAN RAILROADS OF THE 1940s & '50s
5 Shows on 1 Disc!
From the Pentrex archives comes a stunning collection of five classic films produced during the 1940s and 1950s by the Association of American Railroads. Showcasing eastern and western lines, encompassing steam, early diesel, and electric motive power, this vintage film collection brings you a fascinating retrospective of our American railroading heritage. Included are:
On the Track. SP Cab Forwards, steam powered Daylights, and Black Widow diesels open this film about the railroad’s significant and ongoing role in making America a powerful nation. Among the railroads represented are Santa Fe, NYC, Pennsy, GN, Milwaukee, Rio Grande, New Haven, Monon, and Southern. In color.
Lifeline of the Nation. Steam dominates this WWII era film about how railroads supported the war effort. The few diesels shown are very early models. You’ll see Hiawathas and Box Cabs on the Milwaukee Road, steam and a GG-1 electric on the Pennsy, a rare streamlined Hudson on NYC’s Empire State Express, and more. In black & white.
225,000 Mile Proving Ground. This film takes its title from the 225,000 miles of track in service in 1953 when diesel power was replacing steam. The film shows many F-units and even shots of a Union Pacific gas turbine and Santa Fe billboard refrigerator cars. The dramatic close features a Rock Island F-unit passing right over the camera. In color.
Railroads and National Defense. Made during the Korean War period, this film shows how the railroads helped rearm the nation while still meeting America’s transportation needs. Pullmans and coaches provide troop transport while other trains haul tanks and trucks for shipment overseas. Featured railroads include the Katy, Texas & Pacific, IC, Seaboard, and UP. In color.
Mainline USA. This 1950s salute shows railroads meeting the challenge of economic growth by building hump yards, introducing welded rail and CTC, and designing safer trains and features great run-bys on the NYC, GN, D&RGW, Western Maryland, Pennsy, SF, UP, Rock Island, L&N, SP, B&O, and many others! In color.

Volume 2 contains five promotional films that will delight railroad enthusiasts of all ages! Both steam and early diesel power are featured in these rare glimpses of an earlier time. These advertising films helped promote awareness in the minds of the American public about the value railroads played in their daily lives. Take a nostalgic journey back to those former days with these historic films:
Song of the Pioneer. Relive the earliest days of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad with exciting footage of streamlined C&NW passenger trains. Color. 22 Minutes.
The Railroad Story. This rare film tells the dramatic story of Illinois railroads, with footage of over 12 different systems. See CB&Q F-units, Wabash PAs, Nickel Plate Geeps, passenger and freight operations, Korean War troop trains, and more. Color. 23 Minutes.
A Railroad at Work. In this Milwaukee Road PR film produced in the late 1940s, you’ll experience crack passenger trains, hard-working freights, solid ore trains, and streamlined, steam-powered Hiawathas. B&W. 26 Minutes.
Opening a New Frontier. Follow a piggyback truck trailer from start to finish on a high-speed run from Chicago to New York. This show is about the latest innovations brought to rail service in 1955. B&W. 13 Minutes.
Rolling the Freight. Centered around C&NW’s giant Proviso Yard, this film shows how freight was moved in the late steam era of the 1940s. You’ll see hump yard switching, freight handling, and car loading plus run-bys with both steam and early diesel powered freights. B&W. 29 Minutes.

The San Bernardino Subdivision — Los Angeles to San Bernardino
With the camera secured to the front of an eastbound stack train and the scenic landscapes of the BNSF San Bernardino Subdivision stretching before you, you’re “at the throttle” and about to experience a train ride like no other! In this show, you’ll get a truly unique, railroader’s perspective of the 65 miles between Hobart Yard in Los Angeles and the city of San Bernardino. This line supports Amtrak, Metrolink, and heavy BNSF freight action, and you’ll see plenty of this as you ride the rails.
Beginning with an early departure on a beautiful spring day in 2008, you’ll leave Hobart Yard, cautiously observing the 10-mile per hour speed limit until the entire train is on the mainline and the engineer can bring the heavy train up to speed. Running southeast past Pico Rivera, Los Nietos Junction, and La Mirada to Fullerton, you’ll get to observe the routing procedures that support the Amtrak Pacific Surfliners, westbound freights, and Metrolink commuter trains that compete for track space. Moving east past the Fullerton Station, you’ll slip past one of three remaining Santa Fe cantilever signals and head toward the horseshoe bend in Santa Ana Canyon. At West Riverside, UP joins the BNSF rails for the trip over Cajon Pass. By the time you reach the San Bernardino Station, enough daylight remains to give you a start onto the Cajon Sub to Devore. This has been no conventional cab ride; this has been an unobstructed view of the line that few people will ever experience! Welcome to Volume 1 of “At the Throttle!”

BNSF's Fallbridge Subdivision
From headwaters in Canada, the Columbia River flows over twelve hundred miles to the Pacific Ocean and for many of those miles it marks the boundary between the states of Washington and Oregon. Cutting through the Cascade Mountains, the river slices through an 80-mile stretch known as the Columbia River Gorge where the basalt mountains tower up to 4,000 feet above the water. Nearby dormant volcanoes such as Mount Hood and Mount Adams add to the incredible beauty of the Gorge area.
Following the north bank of the river between Vancouver and Pasco, Washington is Burlington Northern Santa Fe's Fallbrook Subdivision. This is a prized site for railfans, offering spectacular vistas and nonstop railroading. Journey with Pentrex from Vancouver east to Maryhill along this scenic route and experience the variety of trains and motive power that ply this famous line. Enjoy scenes of Amtrak's Empire Builder and Talgo train, Swift RoadRailers, bare-table trains, trash trains, manifests, and unit grain trains. Motive power includes BNSF locomotives in Heritage I paint; a matched set of GE Dash 9s in Heritage II, pure sets of BN green power, and rare GP50s in classic Santa Fe blue-and-yellow paint. Also seen are SD40-2s, SD75s, GP38s, GP38-2s, B40-8s, B40-8Ws, and Dash 8-40CWs. The line is dotted with tunnels. You'll see many meets and great action over the swing bridge between Portland and Vancouver. For sheer beauty and interest, railroading on BNSF's Columbia River Gorge Fallbridge Sub just can't be beat!

Union Pacific's Portland Subdivision
Climbing gently from the tidewater ports near Portland, Oregon is the Columbia River Gorge—a wide, flat-water river passage that provides access to the inland agricultural regions of Washington and Oregon and divides the two states along most of their border. It is a spot of unparalleled beauty that hosts two railroad lines: BNSF to the north and Union Pacific along the southern shore.
In Columbia River Gorge Volume I: BNSF’s Fallbridge Subdivision, Pentrex explored the BNSF side of the Gorge, heading east from Vancouver, Washington to the arid desert mountains near the John Day Dam. Now, in Volume 2, we jump across the river to head back west toward Portland following Union Pacific’s Portland Subdivision. We’ll visit many of the region’s best railfanning spots, such as Biggs, Celilo Park, The Dalles, Memaloose State Park, Mosier, and Hood River with the Mount Hood Scenic Railroad. We’ll travel through the Viento State Park area to Wyeth, Cascade Locks, Bonneville Dam, and the spectacular Multnomah Falls. At Troutdale, the mainline splits into two routes to Portland and we’ll visit the junction there before heading into the city.
The trains you’ll see include Canpotex unit potash trains, Spokane International mixed freights, container, grain, trailer, and stack trains, and Amtrak’s Pioneer. Motive power varies from SD40-2s to SD60Ms, SD70Ms, leased SD90MACs, Dash 40-CW, AC4400-CW, GE AC6000, Geeps, and more. CP, BNSF, and C&NW power also make appearances. These images were captured from the mid 1990s to the early 2000s, giving you a chance to see some of the older and newest power in use. With its incredible scenery and nonstop parade of interesting trains and motive power, it’s no wonder UP’s Portland Sub is one of the best railroading hotspots of the nation!

An Albert C. Phelps Film
One of railroading's most spectacular runs took place over the weekend of November 30, 1957 when Southern Pacific Cab Forward 4274 left Sacramento for its final journey across Donner Pass.
This historic event was captured on film by Albert C. Phelps, with special photography by J. Allen Hawkins and Jacob DeVries. You'll ride in the cab of the AC-powered 10-car train as it climbs the steep grade. Special scenes include 4274's shake-down run in Roseville as it prepares for its final run, rare pacing shots of the train as it races up the Sierra Nevada foothills, and photo run-bys staged for the passengers at remote locations.

The Complete Story of SP’s Mighty 4-8-8-2 Articulated Locomotives!
For nearly 47 years, the Southern Pacific Railroad relied upon its massive AC-type steam locomotives to haul freight and passenger trains throughout California and neighboring states. Built to provide the power and flexibility demanded by the mountainous passes they traversed, these giants were constructed with their cab in front of the boiler, thus earning them the name Cab Forwards. The last Cab Forward revenue train ran in 1956, after which all but one were scrapped. From then on, film coverage of these AC-class engines was eagerly sought, hard to locate, and highly prized. Now, after years of research, Pentrex has assembled an awesome collection of footage and still images of SP AC-1s through AC-12s spanning the years 1927 to 1956.
You’ll see Cab Forwards in service on the Overland Route, the San Joaquin Line, the Sunset Route, the Coast Route, the Shasta Route, and the Modoc Line. You’ll thrill to incredible images of Cab Forwards in the snow, on grades, bridges, and scenic valleys; running with mid-train and rear-end helpers; teamed with Black Widow F-units and GS-class helpers; and in meets with other CF’s. The locomotives shown include nearly every class of Articulated Consolidation SP ever rostered: the Baldwin-built Cab Forwards and the Lima-built 3900 class AC-9s. Historic stills of the original cab forwards, the Baldwin-built MC, MM, and AM class engines, are also featured. Plus, author Dr. Bob Church and photographer Stan Kistler provide insightful insiders’ views.
This is the most comprehensive record of the legendary Cab Forwards ever presented on film and it belongs in every railfan’s collection!

Thrill to the sight of big steam conquering the Pacific Northwest as SP Daylight 4449 takes to the rails once more!
The mighty 4449 was painted black with BNSF decals to head up a BNSF Employee Appreciation Special in July, 2000. Running in excursions over former Burlington Northern trackage, the Daylight treated enthusiastic throngs of spectators to the sights and sounds of thundering steam power.
Pentrex was on the spot, capturing exciting scenes throughout the train's extensive route. Starting in Vancouver, Washington, we follow the train across the state and into British Columbia, Canada, and Idaho, visiting the cities of Tacoma, Seattle, Everett, Bellingham, and Vancouver, B.C. A special highlight is a ride aboard the train along the Puget Sound, from Balmer Yard in Seattle to Everett.
You'll see the EAS traveling over Stevens Pass - what an awesome sight that is! - and at Skykomish and exiting Cascade Tunnel. Continuing eastward, the train stops at Wenatchee and Spokane, then crosses the long bridge over Lake Pend Oreille on its way to Sandpoint, Idaho.
Dozens and dozens of runbys fill the screen with scenic images of steam railroading. There's also plenty of freight and passenger train action along the route, including Amtrak's Talgo trains.

Union Pacific has always been on the cutting edge of locomotive technology. In the 1950s, it became the only railroad ever to place a fleet of gas turbine-electric locomotives into regular mainline service.
Here is the whole turbine story, from rare footage of an early steam turbine experiment in 1938 to the first gas turbine demonstrator in 1948. UP put 55 production units into service, the largest rated at 8,500 horsepower each—the most powerful locomotives ever built! You’ll see the demonstrators and all three production models (including the unique “Veranda” models) hauling tonnage on scenic mainlines, moving through yards, and being serviced in engine terminals alongside steam engines and classic F-units. Along the way you’ll learn how turbine locomotives operate and will explore the differences and similarities between turbine-electric and diesel-electric units. The saga ends with an experimental coal-burning turbine locomotive built by Union Pacific itself in 1962. A special treat included in this program is a General Electric promotional film produced in 1938 titled "The Steam-Electric Arrives!"

In the decade they were operated, Union Pacific’s 8500-series Gas Turbine Electric Locomotives earned two nicknames: UP dubbed them the “Super Fleet” for obvious reasons as they were the largest, most powerful locomotives ever employed by the railroad. More often the Turbines were referred to as “Big Blows” due to the deafening roar of their engines. Thirty of these GE-built giants were delivered to the UP between 1958 and 1961. Used primarily between Ogden, Utah and Green River, Wyoming, where the tough grades of the Wasatch Mountains required UP’s sturdiest power, these monsters could log up to 10,000 miles a month hauling heavy mixed freight and coal trains. The 8500 series were permanently coupled six-axle units running on C-C trucks, and their prime mover was the most powerful ever used in a locomotive. The operating weight for the A and B units combined was close to 850,000 pounds, yet they could attain speeds of up to 70 mph!
Video Rails take you back to the 1960s with dramatic footage of UP’s Turbines at work. First and second generation Turbines are briefly introduced and then the real action begins at the Ogden and Riverdale Yards where you’ll see them being serviced, watered, sanded, and fueled. You’ll follow an assortment of trains past Weber Canyon, Uintah, Peterson, Morgan (where you’ll see fantastic pacing sequences), Devil’s Slide, Henefer, Echo Canyon, Castle Rock, and Wahsatch and be treated to thrilling scenes along this scenic route before they reach their eastern boundary at Green River.
The highly corrosive Bunker C fuel that powered the Turbines led to higher than anticipated maintenance costs and with the rising price of fuel oil at the end of the 1960s, the Turbines became too expensive to operate. The entire fleet was traded, sold, or scrapped by 1970. Not one operating unit remains. Yet you can still enjoy the thunder of these legendary powerhouses in this exciting presentation!

Have you ever passed a track gang and wondered what all those machines actually do? Here's your answer and more. You'll visit a tie replacement and surfacing gang to witness the amazing parade of equipment as it progresses down the track. Closeup shots explain what each machine does. Then you'll tour a major shop to see in detail how coal hoppers are built. Next you're off to view undercutting machines cleaning ballast on BNSF.
Did you ever wonder what it's like to work as a dispatcher? You'll visit a Norfolk Southern facility where the chief dispatcher explains the operation. Returning to BNSF, you'll see one of the most awesome pieces of railroad equipment: the P-811 concrete tie layer. This gigantic device lifts welded rails from the ties and forces them to both sides of the machine. It then removes old ties from the right of way, replaces them with new ones, and puts the rails back in place, all in one continuous movement. It's an absolutely fascinating, complex apparatus. You're sure to enjoy this and all of the other exotic equipment Workin' on the Railroad!

Southern Pacific's Sierra Crossing
Donner Pass…the name evokes daunting obstacles with good reason. Steep grades and seven months a year of winter weather put a railroad’s resources to the test. Yet the need to transport goods over the Sierras produces a nonstop parade of trains over this famous line, and that was especially true in 1988 when Video Rails captured incredible Southern Pacific action over Donner Pass.
Starting at the classification yards in Roseville, California, you’ll follow Southern Pacific’s trains up and over “The Hill.” SP’s 6-axle SD40s, SD40T-2s, SD45s, and SD45T-2 tackle 138 miles of up to 2.4 percent grades. Up to 11 units are needed for the climb. The standard arrangement for these 10,000-ton trains is 4 by 6, with four engines leading and 6 mid-train helpers, but you’ll also see long trains with six units leading, six mid-train helpers, and an end-of-train helper. Cabooses are also seen in use here. At Colfax, you’ll see helpers being added to the front and rear of the trains. This is also a stopping point for Amtrak’s twice-daily California Zephyr, several of which are seen with private cars trailing. You’ll follow these trains to Alta, Blue Canyon, Emigrant Gap, Yuba Gap, Cisco, Norden and the “Big Hole,” a 2-mile long tunnel that runs directly under Donner Pass.
Special highlights of this show include rare films of the line’s construction, footage of the trapped City of San Francisco Train 101 at Yuba Pass in 1952, snow fighting equipment with steam powered rotaries pushed by Cab Forwards and other steam power, and chilling views of 1980s railroading through winter blizzards. The scenery is spectacular and the railroading is as intense as it gets when Southern Pacific tackles Donner Pass!

Featuring
Volume I — The East
and
Volume II — The West
Pentrex takes you back to the late 1950s and early 1960s for a close-up look at the waning years of steam locomotives in operation on America’s railroads. The exceptional color footage used for this presentation was captured on 16mm film by noted rail photographer Bruce Ward. Originally released as two separate programs — one focusing on steam railroading in the eastern United States and the other featuring the last of the great steam locomotives serving the western roads — both shows have now been combined on one DVD, bringing you a complete picture of American steam railroading at the end of an era. In this remarkable program, you will be treated to rare images of:
Volume I — The East:
* Norfolk & Western: class J’s in passenger service; class Ks, As, and Ys in freight service.
* Baltimore & Ohio: class S-1 2-10-2s switching and in mainline duty; class T-3s on the mainline; and class EM-1 2-8-8-4 Yellowstones hauling coal.
* Pennsylvania Railroad: a wide variety of locomotives in action at the Columbus yards and roundhouse; class J-1s doubleheading a coal drag.
* Nickel Plate Road: Berkshires and Hudsons hard at work on the NKP.
* Burlington: 4-8-4 Northern 5632 on an Illini Railroad Club excursion.
* Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range: a class M-4 Yellowstone in excursion service.
Volume II — The West:
* Union Pacific: Challengers in helper service over the Wasatch Mountains; Big Boys on Sherman Hill; Consolidations and 0-6-0s as switchers; and 800-series Northerns in passenger and freight service.
* Southern Pacific: Pacifics in commuter service; 0-6-0s at the Oakland Mole; and GS-4s in freight and passenger service in the San Joaquin Valley.
* Colorado & Southern: 2-10-2s and 2-8-2s in road and helper service.
* Great Western Railway: number 51 in the yards at Loveland, Colorado; 2-10-0 Decapod 90 on freight drags; and 0-4-0s at the GW sugar mill in Loveland.

For the Union Pacific Railroad in the early 1990s, railroading in the Blues—the 200-mile segment of UP’s Oregon Division Mainline—meant staggering grades, extreme weather, and 3 daunting summits. Video Rails captured the power of the Union Pacific as it faced its toughest run and released the story of this northwest passage in three separate videos. Now, combined here for you on one action-packed DVD, are those three exciting shows! Featured are:
Volume 1: La Grande to Huntington. Dramatic footage covers all the action from La Grande to Huntington. Climbing out of the Grande Ronde Valley and heading past Oxman Curve and through Burnt River Canyon, Dash 8-40CWs, SD40-2s, C36-7s, and SD60s take on the 2.2 percent grades of UP’s roughest helper district. Trailer trains, container trains, doublestacks, grain, soda ash, auto racks, and Amtrak are seen on this exciting journey.
Volume 2: La Grande to Hinkle. Scale the Blue Mountains from La Grande northwest through Hilgard and Motanic to the summit at Kamela. Ride the cab of a GE Dash 8 and get an engineer’s view from a helper set on the rear of a UP freight. SD40-2s, C36-7s, 8-40Cs, and an SD60 are seen at Meacham Creek Canyon, the Umatilla River, and beyond.
Volume 3: Winter in the Blues. Travel the 56-mile “snow zone” of the Blue Mountains from North Powder to Meacham in the dead of winter. Climb the steep grades to the summits of Telocaset and Kamela, and then barrel across the Grande Valley through La Grande. A steady stream of UP trains have to battle against heavy snows in this formidable obstacle course and you’ll be trackside to appreciate the challenges they face!
