Немного в наше время осталось коллективов, музыка которых способна заставить сильных мужчин плакать. Но один все-таки есть. И называется он R.E.M.
R.E.M. Даже название какое-то странное. А ничего странного - как и положено у студентов - чтобы непонятней и позабористее. Всего навсего сокращение от "Rapid Eye Movement" - медицинский термин, обозначающий быстрые движения зрачков во время фазы неглубокого сна.
Группа R.E.M. появилась на свет в начале 1980го года в захолустном американском городке с гордым, однако, названием - Афины. Название ко многому обязывает - недаром, по загадочным причинам, город Athens до сих пор поставляет большую часть американской альтернативной музыки.
Певец Майкл Стайп (Michael Stipe) и гитарист Питер Бак (Peter Buck) встретились, обнаружили, что у них похожие вкусы в музыке, и решили создать группу. Добавили ударника и басиста, сыграли первый концерт на дне рождения подружки, записали первую песню, выпустили 1000 экземпляров - а она вдруг стала хитом на студенческом радио по всей стране. А их первый альбом "Бормотание" (Murmur) был объявлен журналом "Rolling Stone" лучшим альбомом 1983 года. Несмотря на то, что обычное радио отказывалось от их песен, считая их принципиальтно некоммерческими, "неформатными", студенческие радиостанции играли их постоянно, и каждая их новая пластинка продавалась все лучше ...
... Поначалу Майкл Стайп - от смущения и неуверенности - пел так, что совершенно никто не мог разобрать - что же он поет; как будто он решил воплотить в жизнь мудрую фразу Ошо: "Любое суждение есть невежество".
Но даже когда его голос в миксе стал громче, а слова - более разборчивы, они не стали яснее. Как он сам говорит: "Я считаю, что наши песни - это главный труд нашей жизни; если кому-то нравится искать в них особый смысл помимо этого - милости просим".
Всего R.E.M. записали 13 альбомов; и каждый из них - как бы против ветра, вопреки всеобщим ожиданиям и советам. "Мы всегда были упрямы - абсолютно отказывались делать то, что нам не по нраву. Этот "закон отрицания" с годами сослужил нам хорошую службу."
В 1990 группа, после десяти лет непрестанных гастролей, группа - чтобы не сойти с ума - решила сделать паузу в концертной деятельности. Материала, однако, накопилось много, и они сели в студию.
Их 7 и 8 альбомы, записанные во время этой паузы: "Automatic For the People" и "Out Of Time" - сделали R.E.M. мега-супер-тера-звездами, продали какие-то неисчислимые миллионы экземпляров. Самих R.E.M. это привело в большое замешательство; такого эффекта они никак не ожидали, просто записали новые альбомы.
На этих альбомах все ждали от них рубилова. А получили вместо этого - медленные песни, пиано и мандолины; и струнные в аранжировке когда-то басиста Led Zeppelin Джона Пола Джонса (John Paul Jones). И оказалось, что этого люди и хотели.
Как писала пресса: "Automatic For The People" оказался совершенно непонятным и именно тем, что надо".
А песня "Losing My Religion" - "Теряя свою Религию" - по-моему, до сих пор не слезает с эфира всех суперкоммерческих станций. И мне до сих пор любопытно - хоть кто-нибудь из них вслушивался - что именно он поет?
О, жизнь, она больше чем ты;

Я сказал достаточно.

Я в свете прожекторов,
Теряя свою религию, пытаясь угнаться за тобой;

Это был только сон.
Каждый шепот, каждый час наяву,
Я выбираю свои признания.
Пытаясь не упустить тебя из вида,
Как слепой и глухой дурак...
Когда-то, давным-давно, я попал в Париже на их концерт. Они тогда уже были интернациональными звездами, а я впервые вышел в огромный мир за пределами тогда еще запертой России и взирал на все детскими глазами. И они потрясли меня - чем-то совершенно неожиданным.
Начали они здорово - ну, все, чего я мог ожидать от звезд - громко, слаженно, драйвово... а потом последовало что-то неожиданное. Они начали разваливаться, играть какую-то нескладуху; потом Майкл вдруг остановил группу, сказал, что все это ерунда, а сейчас он почитает стихи - и действительно, влез на стул и начал читать стихи - а потом вдруг они вновь собрались и снова врезали с невероятной силой.
И так происходило весь концерт - то они невероятно сильны, то вдруг разваливаются, как будто это происходит на сцене ленинградского рок-клуба.
А я в это время как раз только что записал "Radio Silence" и был в задумчивости - уж больно там все было заполировано; и тут R.E.M., как горящая надпись на стене, напомнили мне: делать нужно не "как полагается", а как нужно душе - даже если это не сообразуется с мнением всех остальных людей на Земле.
Несколько лет тому назад их ударник Билл Берри (Bill Berry) устал от гастрольной жизни и решил полностью завязать с музыкой. Прямо перед записью нового альбома. В один момент все рухнуло.
Стайп рассказывает: "У меня не получалось ничего написать, просто из-за того, что группа распадалась. В какой-то момент я окончательно уверился, что все кончилось, и я работаю над тем, что будет нашим завещанием. Знаете, когда очень важные для тебя вещи и отношения распадаются у тебя на глазах, не знаешь - что делать. Это было чудовишно".
Но, в конце концов, они - оставшиеся трое - сели и обсудили все свои проблемы. И сошлись на том, что как бы то ни было, но они хотят продолжать.
В итоге то, что для других было бы трагедией, для R.E.M. оказалось творческим вызовом. Они обставились древними синтезаторами, антикварными ритм-машинками и написали огромное количество музыки; а Стайп писал тексты и развешивал полотнища с заготовками текстов по стенам студии, так чтобы все могли вносить коррективы.
Получившийся в итоге альбом "Up" оказался одним из самых прекрасных альбомов группы.
Великий дар R.E.M.: все, что они играют, звучит у них естественно. В них нет ни капли ничего модного.
Их спрашивают - отчего ваша группа до сих пор жива?
Они отвечают: "Как ни банально это звучит, есть только один ответ: наша любовь к музыке. Это то, что заставило нас создать группу, и это то, что до сих пор побуждает нас, вызывает нас и толкает нас вперед. Все остальное, что есть теперь в нашей жизни - слава, богатство, путешествия по миру, посещение невероятных мест, интересные новые знакомства - без музыки все это ничего не значит."
И вроде бы они - группа как группа; но радость в том, что они отказались быть звездами. Как они сами поют в песне "Надежда" - "Ты выглядишь идиотом: и тебе уже все равно". Они не боятся выглядеть идиотами; их больше интересует - что и как еще они сыграют.
Я был не так давно на еще одном их концерте - и снова увидел то, чего совсем не ожидал. Да, они - одна из главных групп XX века, да, живые классики - а выглядят и звучат, как будто продолжается та же студенческая вечеринка их первого концерта, все тот же день рождения - только вместо крохотного клуба перед ними арена с десятками тысяч людей - и эти десятки тысяч подпевают их песням так, как будто это их собственный день рождения.
"Ты чувствуешь себя, как будто ты потерялся; нет, нет - ты не один" - вот, вкратце, то, что они всегда поют. Большие эмоции, большие идеи - и ты веришь им и не чувствуешь себя при этом дураком. Ты не один. Поэтому большие мужчины и плачут. И слава Богу! Иногда это нужно, чтобы снять окалину с души.
Сейчас они начали записывать новый альбом, 14 по счету - и каким бы он не вышел - хорошо, что они есть в нашем мире. Спасибо.
