Review written for TWOWAYMONOLOGUES.COM There's nothing more amazing about music than when you have the feeling it's going to change your life forever. It's even more amazing when you think it could potentially change other people's lives as well. And there is something even more special when you start realizing that the music is so good -- and potentially influential --that it could very possibly be the commencement of a new era. After the excellent (but very unknown) debut from this band (The Dream Of A Modern Day, released in 1999), and according to the experience that I have of music, Mahogany seems to be one of the most underrated bands there is; their new opus, Connectivity!, only confirms this. Mahogany is an eight-piece set (yeah, one member for each letter) from Brooklyn, and they are eight for serious reasons -- less than that wouldn't be enough to manage everything properly. I could compare Mahogany to very few artists; if I had to name one, I'd go with Cocteau Twins. And I can't be too badly off the trail, as Robin Guthrie from the Cocteaus has produced Connectivity! But the main reason for that is probably that Guthrie very much enjoyed the band's sound from their past work, and possibly found a certain something in the music that compares very much to the sum of his musical projects. Honestly, for those who believe firmly in that guy's sense of harmony, there's very little in this album that is going to disappoint them. So how does Connectivity! sound, and how could it manage to stimulate music lovers? Mahogany's music is really not common and it shows that a lot of different types of influences are hitting their souls. First, there's an unexpressible use of ambient harmonies that makes Mahogany so amazing. It goes from the Cocteaus' ethereal guitar sounds to krautrock -- and for this, it's always a pleasure and never a pain to hear. Then the dream pop music of Mahogany sometimes makes the use of electronics to bring in a more futuristic sound. Mahogany love the past because it helped them define their harmoniousness, but they are never too shy to experiment and show the world that progress isn't their biggest fear. The song right in the middle of disc one (Connectivity! features a bonus disc with remixes and videos) is a great example of the specific elements Mahogany use. With elements of retro, shoegazer, handclaps and more all arranged very wisely, "Neo-Plastic Boogie-Woogie" has everything it needs to catch your attention. Plus, the disc two features the video clip for this song and it makes it even greater, since the video alone is all you need to make you happy on the sad day, I tell you. The title of the album stands for "together, we stand connected" and there are multiple references to it throughout the music. References to mathematics are ubiquitous, and there's also an intense nostalgia and hope and anticipation for the future. You can tell by this that the band's social conscience is clearly developed. Their lyrics are very much inductive and are never meant to say things as they are. They often use dual-pronged words and double entendres, and bring the listener in a parallel world in which mathematics are operating concretely -- but in which it's impossible to understand exactly what we're there for. This might disappoint first-degree music listeners. You must all be ready for something fresh and rising when you decide to listen to this album. If you are a fan of tasty music in which you find multiple vocals (female and male), ambient experimentation, electronic supports, fancy and uncommon type of production, two drum machines, pop music in general or even shoegazer, then you'd better get this album now, or you might regret it soon enough. Oh, and also… put the music as loud as your ears can take for a better experience, and I promise it will be worth it. A new classic! SCORE: 9.5
