The Isle of Wight
History:
In its heyday, The Isle of Wight once had over 55 miles of railway, most of which was closed in the years between 1952 and 1966 as a result of the Beeching report. Now just 13 miles remain over two lines: The electrified Island Line and the heritage Isle of Wight Steam Railway, each having a distinct character.
In 1965, a reprieve to closure was offered and the Ryde line spared and modernised down to Shanklin. It was decided that the line be electrified to allow the running of tube stock. These trains were formed from 43 ex-London Underground cars of “Standard” stock, given an overhaul and modified to the needs of the line, beginning their passenger services on 20th March 1967.
This “Standard” stock survived for about two decades before condition deteriorated and new stock needed to be found. 1938 London Underground tube stock, which were very successful but by this point withdrawn from operation, was obtained and converted and serves the line to this day.
The Island Line today is part of the Stagecoach South Western Trains franchise and at eight and half miles long serves the towns of Ryde, starting at the impressive Pier Head, down through Brading, Sandown, Lake and Shanklin.
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway was opened in 1971 after much effort from volunteers restoring the line. This railway runs five miles from Smallbrook Junction, which serves as the interchange with Island Line's electric trains, to Ashey, Havenstreet through to Wootton.
The depot at Havenstreet is the hub of activity and boasts an envied collection of Steam locomotives, many of which spent much of their working life on the railways of the Island. The large fleet, which also contains a small number of Diesel locomotives, ensures a reliable and regular service even when locomotives are scheduled for routine maintenance, which involves a total strip-down every ten years.
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway puts on numerous special events throughout the year and is a big draw for tourism and rail fans.
Focus Time Period:
The route is set in 2008 although some scenarios may have dates within the last decade. The steam and electric lines have been joined with a fictional junction to allow players and future scenarios to run between them.
