Review by Thom Jurek
Most jazz fans know that saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr. was born and raised in New Orleans, the son of Big Donald Harrison, Sr., the first Big Chief of the Afrocentric Mardis Gras Indian tribe Guardians of the Flame. 1992's Indian Blues was his third solo album, a full-length homage to his city, heritage, and culture. His cast included Dr. John, Harrison, Sr., Cyrus Chestnut, Carl Allen, Howard "Smiley" Ricks, and Phil Bowler. Harrison combines his trademark, neo-swing style with Mardi Gras Indian songs (almost all the tracks are covers from that tradition) and funky NOLA R&B. The album's story and music ended up providing HBO's criminally undervalued Treme a story line that revolves around a Mardis Gras Indian Chief and his jazz trumpet-playing son who cut an album of jazzed-up Mardis Gras songs with local luminaries including Dr. John and Harrison, Jr. (who play themselves) and more.
Opener "Hu-Ta-Nay" commences with a Mardis Gras Indian call-and-response parade chant led by Harrison, Sr. atop rumbling hand percussion and drum kit. At 1:15, the inimitable sound of Dr. John's stride piano joins the rhythm section's syncopated funk. He takes the lead vocal as the Guardians respond. It's answered by "Indian Blues," a hard-swinging hard bop groover with funky rhythms and killer piano from Chestnut joining Harrison's accents and fills. "Jak-Ki-Mo-Fi-Nay" is full-fledged, funky neo-bop; the saxophonist melds straight-ahead jazz with a fluid second-line bottom. "Indian Red," typically sung at the beginning and end of Mardis Gras Indian gatherings, is guided by Bowler's bassline as Harrison leads the band in a loose, winding blues that cuts across gospel, soul-jazz, and post-bop. It's followed by a scorching read of Ray Noble's bop classic "Cherokee" in keeping with the Indian theme. Chestnut is its star, with quick, fluid, hard-swinging ostinatos that drive the rest of the band. He also leads the oft-covered "Hiko Hiko," a classic NOLA song with roots in the Mardis Gras Indian tradition. This take is set to a syncopated Caribbean groove atop a second-line rhythm. "Uptown Ruler" is introduced by Bowler's bluesy, guiding bassline that vamps throughout. Harrison and Chestnut explore the tonal possibilities in back-and-forth exchanges and solos laced with a slow, suspenseful bridge. "Big Chief" follows very closely, given Dr. John's ability to channel Professor Longhair and his near-scatting vocals as Harrison honks alongside on tenor. The set ends with Big Chief Jolly's classic "Shave 'Em Dry," rendered by Dr. John's funky piano and gritty, soulful vocals atop a loping backbeat and a chant-like kick drum.
Indian Blues was the first album-length collaboration between Harrison and Dr. John, and more would follow, like 2000's Funky New Orleans, 2010's Tribal, and 2013's New Orleans Gumbo, to name a few. Before Treme, the album was met with mixed reviews north of the Mason-Dixon line; since Treme, it has been given a well-deserved reappraisal with its canny, creative take on NOLA culture and music.
