Broken Transmission
Broken Transmission(aka Signalwave) Broken Transmission is a subgenre of Vaporwave characterized by the use of short soundbites to create new songs and soundscapes. The aim of the genre is to simulate the experience of channel hopping and radio station switching. The music consists of the manipulation of samples taken from TV broadcasts, advertisements, film, Radio Broadcast Recordings and other sources. Samples chosen are often purposefully lo-fi in nature, with a fuzzy and grainy sound. Like vaporwave, samples are looped, slowed down, sped up, and toyed with using other Sound Collage techniques to create a new emotion or atmosphere. The resulting tracks are often one to two minutes in length. Major pioneers of the genre include Midnight Television and Infinity Frequencies, who started making broken transmission as early as 2011 and 2012 respectively. Both artists used stock music and looped it as well as adding a more lo-fi sound to the music. Two other releases that helped establish Broken Transmission were Prism Genesis and ▣世界から解放され▣ [Sekai kara kaihō sa re]. The former looped and distorted very short clips taken from adverts, jingles, TV shows and other mediums, with the latter becoming popular within the greater vaporwave scene. The term itself came into use in 2014 and early 2015 when users on imageboards and forums began using it to describe the style of vaporwave. As Broken Transmission became more established, artists like Nmesh used such lo-fi samples in conjunction with more conventional song structures, though with quite some experimentation, as evidenced in Dream Sequins®. A small sub-style of Broken Transmission, often called weatherwave, exclusively uses weather channel background music and broadcast recordings. Utilizing recordings from weather radio stations and Muzak became popular within the subgenre with the work of prolific Calgary-based artist 天気予報 [Weather Forecast]. The late 2010s would bring a rise in Broken Transmission exclusive labels such as Dark Web Recordings and Night Coverage.
