Cantoria (aka Cantoria de viola) Cantoria is the art of the cantadores, itinerant musicians who are part of the culture of Northeastern Brazil. Similarly to West African griots or European minstrels they travel between cities, villages or farms, carrying either a viola dinâmica or a rabeca, presenting in events or fairs, and living from those earnings. Their music consists of sung poetry, always in a variety of fixed verse forms, with the greatest importance given to the cadence of the lines. In comparison, the melodies are of minor importance, and there is absolutely no concern with achieving beautiful timbres or textures. Cantadores often abuse the high notes and sing screaming, their voices harsh and dry, but as long as they keep steady and confident in their rhymes, they can please their audience. There is a great variety of song forms pertaining to cantoria. Medieval romances involving knightly characters such as the Twelve Peers of France, or faithful damsels, were transmitted orally, in the manner of Medieval Lyric Poetry. These songs were memorised, but they must receive flourishes and individual variations, by which the good cantador is distinguished from the bad. Stories of cangaceiros, social bandits who lived nomadic lives of revenge and violence, tales of unusual local events, stories of famous persons, hunts and bullfights are other usual subjects. If invited to someone's party, event or wedding, it is usual for the cantador to sing a louvação, praising the hosts. The most crowd-pleasing form of cantoria is the Repente or desafio ("challenge"), which consists in a "duel" between two cantadores. They take turns singing improvised lyrics, often containing offences to the other, and shifting between poetic forms, up until one is left speechless. In addition to memorizing multiple entire romances and stories, the cantador needs to keep a huge vocabulary in the forefront of his mind, so as not to lose any challenges. They must also have a complete mastery of the most usual poetic forms, from the short sestain to the complex galope à beira-mar ("gallop at the seashore"), whose stanzas have ten hendecasyllable lines rhyming ABBAACCDDC, and the last line must end, at least, with the word mar ("sea") but preferably with galope na beira do mar Despite having origins dating back to the colonial period, cantoria was not regularly recorded until the mid-1970s, when albums such as "Música popular do Nordeste 2" and "Nordeste: cordel, repente, canção" attracted public attention and opened the path for releases of various deans of the genre, such as Cego Oliveira, Pinto do Monteiro and Patativa do Assaré. Concomitantly, several musicians, such as Zé Ramalho, Elomar and Xangai, began writing cantoria songs in the context of Singer-Songwriter, bringing the sound and lyrical forms of cantoria, although not the aspect of improvisation.
