Most of the programs from the early public television series Jazz Casual lay forgotten in storage until they were rediscovered and issued in variation compilations on CD, VHS, and DVD. Koch paired a number of similar programs together, issuing only the audio portion, including performances and host Ralph Gleason's interviews. This edition features two vocalists in top form. Mel Tormé is first, heard with a trio of little known musicians who provide excellent support. The songs heard in the first half of the show don't measure up to the latter portion, including a hilarious take of "Dat Dere," a dreamy "When Sunny Gets Blue" and a rare opportunity to hear the singer playing ukulele on "Quiet Nights (Corcavado)" and also piano. Gleason's interview segment is interesting in that he tries to get Tormé to define a jazz singer, though his guest eludes an exact definition. There are no weak moments in Carmen McRae's appearance, as she confidently swings a great selection of material, with a strong rhythm section consisting of pianist Norman Simmons, bassist Victor Sproles, and drummer Walter Perkins. Starting with a snappy interpretation of "I'm Gonna Lock My Heart and Throw Away the Key," McRae has her audience in the palm of her hand, while her moving performance of "Trouble Is a Man" packs a powerful punch. The only disappointment is the rapid fadeout of "Exactly Like You" at the close of the broadcast (due to the series' time constraints), as McRae was an accomplished pianist who rarely recorded on the instrument. The exchanges between the singer and her pianist between numbers are often humorous, while the interview segments are of interest as well. While this pair of sessions continue to appear on various DVDs in different combinations, this audio CD has long since been deleted from the Koch catalog.
