Winners of the 7th Music Crossroads InterRegional Festival, Kongo Vibes are the one of the most vibrant musical sensations to breach Malawian boarders. The experience they provide audiences is uniquely African combing traditional local styles of Beni, Manganje, Vimbuza and Chitererathe with deeply moving vocals emerging from their roots reggae past. Konga Vibes has for the past year been refining their already distinctive sound, through the guidance of Music Crossroads industry specialists they have become an African outfit of international standards. Rapidly gaining a strong home crowd following, the group has become an inspiration for fellow musicians and Malawian youth demonstrating that through music, anything is possible. In 2007 Konga Vibes enjoyed their European Tour of 6 nations across the contenent. The tour included large scale performances at events such as the Festival Mundial in Holland, the Amsterdam Roots Festival, the Fête de la Musique in Tournai Belgium and the acclaimed world music festival Couleur Café in Brussels, as well as smaller scale interactive meetings/performances.

Konga Vibes from Malawi has won a place at Couleur Café as the winner of Music Crossroads Southern Africa. The southern African music competition of Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) is one of four projects in the South that Couleur Café supports.
Konga Vibes thanks for the support of the Brussels festival by organizing several smaller gigs in the Solidarity Village in addition to the performance on Sunday evening. Upon their arrival in Barcelona, Agenda phoned Snowden Manyozo, the group's front man, and Gayighayi Mathews Mfuni, the head of Music Crossroads Malawi, who is responsible for organizing Konga Vibes' first European tour.
How does the Music Crossroads Southern Africa competition work?
Gayighayi Mathews Mfunic: Five different southern African countries participate: Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. In each country we look for young musicians between the ages of 15 and 25 to participate in a local competition. There are no music schools in Malawi where the youngsters can learn or get advice, so we also invite experienced musicians and professionals to train and guide these young lads. During a mini-festival, the best group is selected, who will then be allowed to participate in the competition at national level. There the musicians are again given the opportunity to receive further training and to follow workshops. The two best bands then move on to Music Crossroads Southern Africa where a total of ten bands from the five southern African countries perform. Konga Vibes has won that competition this year and is therefore allowed to tour Europe. It is the first time that they perform outside Africa. They also received support with the recording of their first album.
Snowden Manyozo : Thanks to JMI and Music Crossroads we were able to record the album. This would never have been possible without their support, as there is no recording infrastructure in Malawi; there is nothing to produce an album. We try to survive as artists, but it is very difficult. Life in Malawi is not easy. People work all day, but get very little money for it. They can't even meet their basic needs with it.
The album is called Mwambo wanga. What does that mean?
Mfuni : 'My habits and values.' 'Principles of life.' There are so many Malawian values that we no longer find in people's daily lives. We notice that if people obeyed those norms and values, many contemporary problems such as AIDS would never arise.
manyozo: We sing about the reality of everyday life in the slums of Lilongwe, the Malawian capital. About how people live, the problems caused by the HIV virus and AIDS, social problems. We make music to ease this misery, we spread a message of love and peace, of hope for a better future for our children. Our message is mainly aimed at the young, because they are heavily confronted with HIV/AIDS, lack of human rights and education. We ask the youth to be responsible and not to get infected with the HIV virus in order to contribute to the social and economic progress of our country. Because AIDS only makes things worse.
The music is upbeat and happy. In combination with the three dancers on stage, that must have an infectious effect.
Manyozo: We bring different traditional dances from Malawi: from the center, from the north, from the south. Different music styles that each have their traditional dance. Hopefully we'll get the entire audience dancing too!
