‘the fresh old school hammond soul, jazz and funk sound from Holland’ Sven Figee, musician, producer and founder of ‘Sven Hammond Soul’ was born on the 27th of may 1975. His style of playing may be best described as rockin’ fat hammond soul, jazz and funk. Studied jazz piano at the Rotterdam conservatory but got really into playing the Hammond B3 with The Hague based funk band 'Prats the Whoblem'. During and after his student days he started touring as sideman with dutch singer / songwriter Marcel de Groot. After that, he joined dutch rock diva Anouk on her European tour in '98/'99 and played several club tours and festivals with her in 2000. In 2000 he also teamed up with dutch singer Rose Spearman producing and co-writing her debut album 'Trust' in 2002 and 'Livin It' in 2007. He cooperated with many artists like Keith Caputo (US), Nate James (UK), Sandra St. Victor (US), Berget Lewis, DJ Roog, DJ Maestro, Xander de Buisonje and many others.
The year 2006 he started his own band, ‘Sven Hammond Soul’.
Drummer Joost Kroon and bass player Glenn Gaddum are playing fuming sixties and seventies grooves on which Sven’s organ moans, growls, jizzls, jazzls and rocks; the way it should be. Inspired by his heroes Jimmy McGriff, Jimmy Smith and Jimmy Hendrix, Figee almost breaks down the organ. Guitar player Tim Eijmaal tops it of with razor-sharp riffs and distorting, screaming and bluesy guitar solo’s.
They recorded a live CD on the 5th of oktober 2006 @ cafe the Zwarte Ruiter, Den Haag.
That gave them a great spin off: The Hague Jazz festival (2007 and 2008), Ijazz festival (Amsterdam, 2008) and the Bel Air Sessions in the Hague, teaming up with many dutch soul and jazz musicians like Boris, Benjamin Herman, Hugh Kanza and many others. After more than a year of hard work in the studio they recently finished the new album, called 'The Marmalade Sessions', with some great features from Corrina Greyson (UK), Benjamin Herman (NL) and Sherry Dyanne (NL).
The first single, ‘Lookin Up Turnin Round’, featuring vocals of Corrina Greyson, was released by Hammond beat records (US) on 7-inch vinyl october 2009 and is available on www.hammondbeat.com and some of the best record stores on the planet, like Dusty Grooves (Chicago, US) and Concerto, Plato, Velvet and Jazz Center (NL).
The new studio album will be released by VG-Music the 2nd of april 2010 and will be distributed by Rough Trade (Benelux). The album will be widely available, digital and physical!
Funky fresh, this music was made for the dance floor. Sven Figees's hammond moans, sweats, sobs and wails over Joost Kroon's (New Cool Collective) mean drumming, while Glenn Gaddum's unwavering bass confidently pins it all to a steady Jazz groove. Contributions by vocalists Sherry Dyanne and Corrina Grayson add that special Soul flavor, while Benjamin Herman on sax adds his own distinctive tone to Benny's Blues. This is an album that makes you want to get up, clear your living room floor in one fell swoop and get down and boogie!
