Decca Classics is thrilled to announce a new Baroque album from Grammy award-winning violinist Nicola Benedetti. This is the first album Benedetti has released on a period set-up including gut strings, and she is joined by a leading group of freelance baroque musicians, forming the Benedetti Baroque Orchestra for the very first time. The album features a selection of concerti by Vivaldi plus Geminiani’s incredible arrangement of Corelli’s ‘La Folia’, one of the oldest western classical themes which has been arranged by many composers over time, particularly in the baroque era. Geminiani was one of the greatest violinists of the era and Corelli was one of his teachers whilst growing up in Italy. Later when he moved to London, Geminiani reworked a number of Corelli’s works for local audiences including this arrangement of ‘La Folia’.

Violinist Nicola Benedetti has performed and recorded Baroque violin music before, but this is the first time she has recorded with an ensemble of historically appropriate instruments, and her note makes reference to her general lack of background in the field. Indeed, she calls Baroque "a plunge in the deep end," and to top it off, she not only assembles an ensemble of players from various Baroque orchestras but dubs it the Benedetti Baroque Ensemble. This is a perilous course, but Benedetti succeeds on several counts. Her namesake orchestra is able to follow her along the quite original path she charts. Benedetti might easily have chosen to play some Vivaldi greatest hits, and everyone would have been pleased. Instead, she offers a program with one concerto by Geminiani and three by Vivaldi, plus one movement of a fourth. These are not well-known works, and they seem to have been picked to fit the sound she forges, which bears a relationship to the punchy, dramatic style of contemporary Italian groups in Vivaldi but, especially in the outer movements, takes it further. Her "La Folia" Geminiani concerto is a big set of variations, and the Vivaldi pieces tend toward harmonic stasis, with a violin part that Benedetti renders as a series of sharp points of light. She completely avoids the sentimental style often favored by newcomers to Vivaldi, and her approach will stick in the listener's mind. The program is short at 52 minutes plus, and one wonders why it couldn't have been rounded out in some more persuasive way than by the Andante movement from the Violin Concerto in B flat major, RV 583. Vivaldi himself composed a "La Folia," for one thing, but there is plenty here to make one hope that the Benedetti Baroque Ensemble is not a one-shot deal.
