The neighbor was Clarence Smith, who performs and records under the name Sonny Rhodes, a veteran blues musician originally from Texas who spent many years in California. Rhodes played both electric guitar and electric lap steel guitar. Rhodes had recorded multiple singles, the first released in the early 1960s, and a number of albums, his first released in 1977. Birchwood's playing impressed Rhodes and soon Rhodes invited Birchwood to join his touring band. According to Living Blues magazine, Birchwood was just out of high school when Rhodes took him out on tour. He toured with Rhodes off and on for four years while attending college. In the same article, Birchwood stated, "I learned a lot from him (Rhodes). He took me all over the United States, all over Canada…and he showed me what the lifestyle was like. He always kept me second in command, by his side, and tried to show me how to be a bandleader. He showed me the business side of it." It was also Rhodes who inspired Birchwood to take up lap steel guitar. "Sonny always said, 'Play what's in your heart.' I've never lost sight of that," said Birchwood.
Birchwood continued his education and received his MBA from the University of Tampa. "I challenged myself to get that degree," Birchwood said. "These days, it's not good enough to just be a good player." In 2010, Birchwood moved to Tampa and formed the current version of The Selwyn Birchwood Band, with Donald Wright on bass, Curtis Nutall on drums and baritone sax player Regi Oliver. The band competed in the 2012 International Blues Challenge before winning in 2013. Alligator Records president Bruce Iglauer was a judge for the finals of the Blues Challenge in 2013. He stated, "I saw Selwyn's potential in 2012. He absolutely deserved to win in 2013." The band began touring outside of Florida and, in early 2014, signed with the Intrepid Artists booking agency of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Since winning the International Blues Challenge, the Selwyn Birchwood Band has performed at many festivals including The Springing the Blues Festival, The Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, The Tampa Bay Blues Festival, The King Biscuit Blues Festival, The North Atlantic Blues Festival and also on The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. Birchwood has opened for Robert Cray and Buddy Guy, and has shared the stage with veteran bluesman and fellow Alligator Records artist Joe Louis Walker (who made a guest appearance on Don't Call No Ambulance).
On June 10, 2014, Chicago-based Alligator Records released his debut album for the label, Don't Call No Ambulance. The album was produced by Birchwood, recorded in Florida and mixed in Chicago under the supervision of Birchwood and Alligator Records president Bruce Iglauer. Previous to the Alligator release, Birchwood had self-released two CDs, FL Boy (2011) and Road Worn (2013).
In 2015, Birchwood won a Blues Music Award in the 'Best New Artist Album' category for Don't Call No Ambulance. Discography

Since beginning his tenure with Alligator Records on 2014's fine Don't Call No Ambulance, Florida bluesman Selwyn Birchwood has shown a restless spirit. That set established him as a top-shelf guitar and lap steel wrangler. 2017's Pick Your Poison underscored those qualities in reflections of Hill Country, raw roadhouse, and Chicago blues, tempered by gritty R&B. On Living in a Burning House, Birchwood assembles all that and more with enormous growth as a singer, songwriter, and arranger on these 13 original songs. And, yes, he still plays a hell of a lot of guitar and lap steel. He is accompanied by Regi Oliver on reeds and woodwinds, bassist Donald Wright, keyboardist Walter "Bunt" May, and recent drummer Philip Walker. Living in a Burning House has a big, ferocious sound thanks to Tom Hambridge's production and mix; it's in your face and exquisitely detailed. The horn and organ intro on "I'd Climb Mountains" recalls a Stax revue, before Birchwood leads the band in a cut-time blues shuffle. Oliver's multi-tracked horns help punch up a massive, greasy groove that recalls an early Elvin Bishop date. Fans of Birchwood's lap steel playing will dig "I Got Drunk, Laid and Stoned," a scorching barroom anthem with nasty slide and honking baritone sax from Oliver. A knotty horn breakdown -- a la '70s Stevie Wonder -- introduces the poignant title-track single. It gives way to a steamy, roiling reggae vamp propelled by Wright's bass line and May's keys. It's snatched back under the funky blues umbrella in Birchwood's guitar playing. His voice and phrasing bridge the otherworldly span between Gil Scott-Heron and Lou Rawls. "You Can't Steal My Shine" is a strolling rave-up soul-blues with a killer vocal from Birchwood. "Revelation" expansively combines Chicago and Delta blues with carnal gospel, and it's anchored by a simple, dirty, throbbing, two-note bass vamp. Birchwood delivers a knotty, ladder-climbing guitar break that sounds like it was played with a rusty nail. The interplay between horns, keys, and drums on "Searching for My Tribe" is torn wide open by Birchwood's biting, distorted guitar, as he testifies to the core about the relentless search for belonging. "She's a Dime" is swaggering, good-time soul-blues that swings hard in a hip little tribute to Holland-Dozier-Holland's "How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You." It's followed by "One More Time," showcasing the glorious interplay between Oliver's baritone and Birchwood's lyrical six-string. His solo bleeds emotion. "Freaks Come Out at Night" is a rancorous dirty blues that weds R.L. Burnside's electric choogle to Howlin' Wolf's evil moan, and a burning boogie John Lee Hooker would bless -- complete with wicked slide work. On Living in a Burning House, Birchwood erases arbitrary boundaries between blues- and R&B-based genres. He openly draws from history but situates his original music expansively in the here and now; his many stylistic referents combine in new ways to offer a stubbornly holistic, emotionally resonant, and visionary approach.

Selwyn Birchwood is the epitome of a young contemporary blues contender who has learned his chops in the old school way through touring.
He’s nurtured his tone, honed his vocal phrasing and he’s worked on his narratives which stretch from relationship songs and moments of occasional introspection to the art of story telling.
He’s equally good as a singer and guitar player with the ability to get inside the song and seize the moment.
Baritone and tenor sax player Regi Oliver is a significant presence, while the band’s tight interplay is flanked by frequent ‘call and response’ bv’s, on an album that eloquently mixes funk, blues, soul with occasional hints of fusion and reggae. Selwyn accurately describes this wide ranging crossover style as: “electric, swamp, funking blues.”
Tom Hambridge’s production captures the band’s natural energy and he polishes the solos and frames everything with tight arrangements that still allow the songs to breath.
All that’s really missing is a few memorable songs which Birchwood makes up for with some cool lyrical lines. These range from the opening vitriolic lyrics of ‘Done Cryin’ – “I have to buy me a silver spade, to bury all the love that we made, I wouldn’t leave a single trace, And I’d plant dead flowers on that grave” – to the polar opposite optimism of ‘Plenty To Be Grateful For’: “It’s not difficult to find a reason to be mad, but I’m telling you it’s just as easy, to find a reason to be glad.”
‘Done Cryin’ also acts as a template for the album as a whole. The use of contrast between the opening sinewy guitar line and his gruff, but warm timbre, and earthy horns works perfectly on a broken relationship song on which Byron Garner’s bubbling percussion cleverly suggest an underlying turmoil. He resolves the musical tension with interwoven guitar work with a shimmering tone.
His use of language is also sharp as a tack; “I was there to catch you, but now that I’m gone, you only have your arrogance to break your fall.”
On other occasions his muddies, his tone and counters that with a more restrained vocal. On the buzz tone-led ‘Horns Below Her Halo’, his guitar solo has all the power of water bursting through a dam, and acts as a counterweight to lyrical mundanity.
The supernatural title track is an adventurous jazzy, reggae and crisp toned affair over a sumptuous horn arrangement with a ‘Hit The Road Jack’ backing vocal motif.
He goes on to find the perfect balance on the self affirmative ‘My Own Worst Enemy’, where any residual self doubt is blown away by his aggressive vocal and intense guitar work over an another mesmerising horn accompaniment.
Selwyn Birchwood’s blues has an authenticity because he sings about what he knows, in neatly balanced songs born of experience and imagination.
He may not be big on outright emotion, but he doesn’t hold back on ‘Florida Man’s track with a lyrical newspaper headline feel and a gnawing guitar tone to his slide solo.
On the other hand, he’s unafraid to be reflective as on the jazzy guitar and staccato word plays of the autobiographical ‘Underdog’, when he tells us he is: “An underdog, Understated, Undermined, and Underappreciated.”
Musically it’s very close to mid 70’s funky Zappa fusion feel, while his ripping slide guitar embodies the anger and frustration of someone who he tells us: “worked twice as hard to get half as far.”
The noirish ‘Swim At Your Own Risk’ has a claustrophobic feel which he never quite leaves behind during the course of an album that builds and then resolves lyrical and musical tensions.
And it’s the way he resolves those musical moments that gives the album its spark.
The band impressively leans into the uplifting ‘Hopeless Romantic’ with real zest, on a perfect melange of guitar, horns and percussion.
‘Exorcist’ is an album on which the individual players beautifully support the whole, even when there’s a line-up change on both the Dobro-led lilting shuffle of ‘ILa view’ and the undulating swing of ‘Call Me What You Want To’.
The latter features the subtle contrast of Selwyn’s enveloping dirt toned guitar and Jim Mckaba’s sweet piano.
His use of biblical imagery on the gospel tinged ‘Lazarus’ feels almost lazy, but the song builds impressively on the back of Ed Krout’s funky Rhodes and Hammond and leads to an exquisitely toned solo by Regi Oliver which brings real heft.
‘Exorcist’ is a contemporary blues album shot through with all shades of blues, funk and plenty of soul.
It’s neatly book-ended by foot stomping instrumental called ‘Show Tune’. The feverish tempo gives the number a Blues Brothers feel, as Oliver adds some grainy sax work alongside Birchwood’s B.B. King style vibrato. The latter’s tremulous tone occupies the role of his own absent vocal.
As on this track, so with the album as a whole, the blues speaks to us in many ways.
