Musician who not only is a great tenor saxophonist but a fine composer but Rudolph Johnson is virtually unknown even to the most informed fans and musicians. This writer knows very little about Rudolph Johnson other than he was born likely in the mid-40's in Columbus, Ohio. He moved to the west coast after first heading east and played in Los Angeles and in San Francisco. He was an underground musician and although both he and I spent a lot of time in San Francisco we never crossed paths. Perhaps someone had spoken to me about Rudolph but it never registered with me as I never heard him play. It is a bit ironic because it seemed we frequented the same clubs in that city.
My first hearing of Rudolph came as a result of a good friend, drummer Don Fraser who called me up and said he bought this album by a guy named Rudolph Johnson and I should drop by sometime soon and listen to it. This was in late 1972. I did so and was blown away. The album came out on a small independent label called Black Jazz out of L.A. I owned a couple of Black Jazz records but not this one. I went out and bought it the next day. This album is tonight's Jazz Feature. At the time I recognised only one player on the date and that is bassist Reggie Johnson. The others, pianist John Barnes and drummer Ray Pounds were unknown to me as was Rudolph. As it turned out Johnson only made two albums under his name, this and one other for this label.
Rudolph in the mid 60's worked with organist Jimmy McGriff all over the east coast but then moved to L.A. There are some sideman appearances scattered around but he did work and tour with Ray Charles in the 70's and early 80's. I did finally meet him here in Vancouver where he was appearing with Ray at the Cave Supper Club. Rudolph and I had a late meal after his Charles gig one night and we exchanged numbers and laughed about how we had never met considering that we frequented many of the same spots. He told me that he practised meditation (he didn't drink or ever use drugs of any kind) and also practised his horn 6 to 8 hours a day. As he told me, "you've only got so much time here (on earth) and you've got to make it count every minute". That was our only meeting. I must also say that he blew the roof off the Cave during his few solo spots with the Charles' band.
There isn't much more to say other than Rudolph passed away in early 2000 and there was nothing in the Jazz press about this.
