Karsten Pflum has always been there for us at Touched Music, and this is no exception - 'Revealed EP' is a revelation not only on a musical level - it's also a massive cat being let out of a humungous bag.
Touched Music followers familiar with the three 'Covert' releases may remember micro-analyisng mystery tracks by mystery artists and getting all frustrated about it. My attempt to come up with some subtle, clever & witty ways of saying this failed but I'm just too thick so here goes - SOME OF IT WAS KARSTEN ALL ALONG!
This begins with Pflum's contributions to the Covert series in chronological order. 'Borg_Acid160bpm', 'Song In Song' & 'Earthday' are all epic tracks in their own right - not only presented here in their original glory they've also been given the treatment by some really cool people.
Humanoid depart form their well-known acid style and twist 'Borg Acid' up a bit with welcome accents and additions to the original piece, it's not a complete departure which is also enjoyable.
'Song In Song' is given love twice over and in very different fashions. Rolando Simmons, fresh from his recent releases on the epic 030303 label, offers a foreboding rework with a gentle ramp up but contorted finish that's bound to lead to some interesting dance moves. Once again Touched introduces me to someone new in the form of Drøn with their own cerebral interpretation.
'Earthday' gets attention from veteran John Tejada, throwing his hat into the ring with a real banger. It's a masterful manipulation of stems with a crisp tempo and great sample reuse.
Mixing things up a bit the last two pieces are both taken from Karsten's recent Touched Music release 'Love Canticles'.
'I Am Ice' is reworked by Carbinax, whose recent prolific output has solidified his place in my eternal playlist. It was a good track to begin with and his take on it is a fitting tribute.
Finally, Velum Break pops up once again hot off the heel of his 'Bench Manoeuvres' release with a playful bounce and unconventional phrasal transitions to polish off the day remixing 'Montpelier Disco'. It's a nice note to finish off on and full of ear-worms.
